Change is one of the common facts of life. Most of us have seen a number of changes in our own lives from simple things like fashion trends and entertainment (娱乐)to bigger changes in technology.
Language, too, has experienced change and continues to develop. The continuous change is what keeps languages alive.
Slang is a way in which languages can transform(改变)and are renewed. Slang is the use of informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in a language. Some consider slang to be witty (言辞巧妙的)and clever, adding spice to informal writing and spoken language. However, others criticize its use, believing that it weakens the language. Walt Whitman described slang as "the start of imagination and humor, breathing into its nostrils (鼻孔)the breath of life".
The spoken English language of today’s younger generation is filled with slang words and expressions. These lively words and phrases are an example of how language plants its own seeds of change that develop within social circumstances (环境).
Sometimes slang is the use of a word that is already in the standard dictionary, such as lift (to pick up, rise), is given a new meaning, such as "to steal"; or hunk (a large piece of something) which has now become "a handsome man". Other times, slang is an invented word, such as chocoholic, which means "a person who loves chocolate". Other invented words are mula, which means "money" and airhead, which means "a person who is stupid".
Now, you’ll understand your friends if they say something like: "I was such an airhead to think that I could get away with lifting a whole box of chocolates from the store just because I was all out of mula."
1. What’s Whitman’s attitude towards slang
A. He is doubtful about it. B. He thinks highly of it.
C. He shows no interest in it. D. He is against the use of it.
2. The underlined word "spice" in the third paragraph probably means ______.
A. standard B. expression C. fun D. tune
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A. Slang cannot be found in the dictionary.
B. People hold different opinions towards slang.
C. An "airhead" refers to a person who is out of money.
D. "Hunk" is an invented word.
4. What’s the main idea of the text
A. The origin of slang. B. An introduction to slang.
C. An analysis of language change. D. The use of slang.

The festivities(庆祝活动)which are now related to the celebration of May reached their height in England during the Middle Ages. They were heavily influenced by Italian forms of celebration dating back to the time of ancient Rome.
On the first day of May, English villagers got up early to walk in the countryside gathering flowers and branches. A tall Maypole was erected on the village green, which was usually the center of the village. In larger places, such as London, a Maypole was set up and wouldn't be removed for a long time. The Maypole was made of the trunk of a tall tree, and was decorated with bright flowers of the field. In celebration of the season, the villagers danced and sang around the Maypole in the music of a piper (风笛手).They often wore colorful costumes upon which hung several small bells.
The most beautiful girl of the village was chosen to be the Queen of May. In some places of England a May King was also chosen. The Queen and King of May led the village dancers and ruled over the May Day festivities. During the Elizabethan period the king and queen were called Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
The Puritans didn't like this celebration. They were opposed to the Maypole and the activities. For a time they succeeded in stopping the celebration of May,but the festivities returned within a few decades and continue in many English villages today.
Here is an old English custom which is still observed in some areas. Children visit people house by house. They bring flowers in exchange for pennies. Once the pennies are collected, the children throw them into a wishing well.

During the 20th century the temperature of earth rose rapidly comparing to other natural changes. There is a fierce debate over whether it is human activity which has caused this global warming and it is just a natural phenomenon.
Many scientists believed that people have caused the increase in the earth’s temperature through the burning of fossil fuels. Some byproduct of this process are called “greenhouse” gases, the most importantly one being carbon dioxide.
When they burn fossil fuels, we add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The increased amount of carbon dioxide means that more heat energy is trapping in the atmosphere, causing the global temperature to rise. Scientists believe that the burning of more and more fossil fuels has resulted at this increase in carbon dioxide.

1. has been marked。
2. situated。表示某地方位于何地时,用be situated in /on, 句中“situated…”相当于定语从句,“which was situated…”。
3. However。
4. Realizing。
5. unable。
6. who。引导定语从句并在从句中作主语,先行词是The people of Chu,故填who。
7. every。
8. them。
9. before。
10. the。
