When Lauren Schandevel arrived at the University of Michigan for her freshman year,
she was struck by how wealthy all her classmates appeared to be.
"Just wealthy in ways that I couldn't even imagine," Schandevel recalls. Students had
fashionable clothes and well-connected and powerful parents.
Schandevel had grown up in the north of Detroit. Her family was working class
and she had gotten scholarships and a few loans to make attending the admirable state
school a reality. When she got to campus, she didn't think much about her status as a
low-income student. Sure, when her bill came due, she’d have a bit of panic--- would this
be the semester the financial aid fell through
Then, during Schandevel's junior year, the university's student government put out a
campus affordability guide, written with the average Michigan student in mind-but it's
worth noting that the average student at the school has a family income of about $150,000
per year.
The advice didn't go over well with low-income students on campus. "A lot of the
advice was like: fire your maid or sell your car. I was frustrated(受挫的)by this guide, and
I was seeing others frustrated by it," says Schandevel.
She decided to make her own affordability guide, and she fired up a Google doc and
titled it “Being Not-Rich at UM: A Guide". She added her own tips---the things that helped
her survive and budget. But there was so much she didn't know, so she left the sharing
settings(分享设置) open for other students to jump in and edit the online document.
It took off. Hundreds of students started adding their tips about how to navigate
college when you are paying your way through college. Today, Schandevel's crowd- sourced
guide stretches more than 100 pages. It includes advice about jobs, housing, teachers and
financial aid---even many great tips on where to find free food on campus. The doc’s
popularity helped her accept her economic status and gave her control over her life.
“Economic status is such an invisible identity, and there are no places on campus
where we can really find each other,” says Schandevel. “It brought together people who
had experienced this before, and students knew they were not alone.”
55. How did Schandevel probably feel in her first year of college
A. Very excited
B. A little curious.
C. Very confident
D. A little upset.
56.What's the campus affordability guide mainly about
A. Ways to live a happy life.

C. Advice on how to save money
D. Ideas about how to become creative
57. what is Schandevel’s attitude towards the guide from the student government
A. Ambiguous
B. cautious
C. disapproving
D. positive
58. What does the expression “crowd-sourced” in paragraph 7 mean
A.The tips are well-accepted
B. The tips are from the crowd
C. The source of finance is abundant
D. The online document is crowded
59.What do we know about Schandevel's affordability guide
A. It brings people in the same ecnomic situation together
B. It helps her improve her family’s living conditions.
C. It serves as a reminder of keeping to a strict budget
D. It offered financial aid to low-income students.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is
nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block
out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up
the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the
French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546.
Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly
way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had
taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not
go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded
as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is
good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing
disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World
War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white,
cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to
warn their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease.
On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家 ),encourages
children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is
gaining some ground.
60. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses

A. Afraid
62. What does the underlined word “merit”in paragraph 3 mean
A. effect B. advantage C. damage

D. attitude
63. How does the passage mainly develop
A. By providing examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By following theorderof importance.
64. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage
A. To stress the role of dirt.

C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.

Amazon Alert
The Amazon rain forest stretches about 2.7 million square miles. It has been described
as the "lungs of our planet." More than 20% of the planet's oxygen is produced there! The
Amazon holds one-fifth of the world's freshwater supply. The tropical forests in the heart
of the Amazon basin are full of many different kinds of life. They hold the world's widest
variety of life, and are also home to many species found nowhere else. This area is one of
the world's natural treasures. But unless nations around the world take action, it will
disappear.
Every year, the rain forest in the Amazon is shrinking. Farmers and builders are
clearing the land, usually by burning down the forest. This destruction reached record
levels in the 1990s and has remained steady since then. In 2003, an estimated 9,170 square
miles were burned or cleared.
The Amazon River basin stretches into the countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia,
but the bulk of it is in Brazil. Loggers, miners, and farmers in Brazil have been rapidly
cutting down the Amazon since the 1960s. South American farmers and settlers burn the
rain forest to clear the land. The land is used to grow crops and raise livestock or for new
towns. Satellite photos show how the forest continues to shrink.
The government of Brazil has pledged time and again to slow down the clearing of
land. However, they have not done enough to stop illegal burning and logging. But it's not
just Brazil's problem. The Amazon is a treasure for all of humanity. Other countries,
including the United States, must do more to help Brazil preserve the Amazon.
In order to protect the area, the Central Amazon Conservation Complex in Brazil was
added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The heritage site makes up the largest
protected area in the Amazon Basin (over 6 million hectares). The rain forest is over 55
million years old. There are still many parts of the Amazon that no one has ever been to,
and many species that no one has ever seen.
Fact File
The Amazon
You can't drive there! The main form of transportation in the Amazon is by boat. The
only way to get around the rain forest is through the Amazon River system. The river
system has 20 percent of all the Earth's fresh water. Each year during the rainy season, the
rivers flood over nine meters deep.
The Amazon is famous for these flooded forests. Tourists will spend days boating
through the flooded areas, watching tropical birds flying in the humid air, and fish
swimming through the water.

第一节:阅读表达(共 5小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分)
Some fourteen years ago, I read Diet for a New America by John Robbins. At that
time I wanted to change the world by means of stopping animals from being eaten by
people.
Diet for a New America paints a beautiful picture of the animal world, in which one is
rich not only in intelligence and beauty but even in compassion (同情). It tells stories, for
example, of dolphins saving sea mammals from predatory whales and saving humans from
shipwreck. It appealed to my sense of compassion, one of the values I had always cherished
deeply in my heart, no matter how stupidly or wisely I had tried to put it into practice.
Having captured my compassion, the book naturally led me to see human authority over
animals as abusive and unjust. Diet for a New America also convinced me that consuming
animal products is ecologically irresponsible and the major cause of human disease.
So I decided to make a change. I bought a tofu cookbook, and purged every form of
animal flesh from my diet. Six months later, I went from vegetarian to vegan and rid even

eggs and dairy products from my diet. This diet was qualified as vegan in most respects,
although I didn’t add some of the more extreme elements, like avoiding honey.
However, as time went by, my health became bad due to the diet without animal
products. My parents were worried and took me to a doctor. The doctor suggested I change
my diet. Finally, I gave up being a vegan. I included high-quality, nutrient-dense animal
foods into my diet again. And I finally recovered.
Being a vegan isn’t suitable for everyone and I’m a good example of it. I should find
other proper ways to protect animals and make their life easier.

My Idol
Everyone may have their own idol. My idol is one of the greastest scientists, Deng
jiaxian. Deng Jiaxian was among the founders of China's nuclear programme. After
coming back from the US, he devoted himself whole-heartedly to the development of the
"two bombs". Spending years apart from his family and enduring the extreme conditions
of the Gobi desert, he refused to back down from his responsibilities and kept on
conducting scientific research, contributing to the successful development of the atomic
bomb.
I am greatly inspired by his spirit of perseverance, integrity and innovation in science
and deeply touched by his love and devotion to the motherland. Thanks to the
contributions of the pioneers like Deng jiaxian, we are enjoying a peaceful and happy life.
As a teenager, I will learn from Deng jiaxian and spare no effort to work hard and
contribute to the development of China.
