Passage 1 女儿的宝藏
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One morning, Molly handed me two bags. One regular lunch paper bag, and the one with staples(订书机) and paperclips(回形针). “Why two bags ” “The other one is something else.” “What’s in it ” “Just some stuff. Take it with you.” I stuffed both bags into my briefcase(公文包), kissed the child and rushed off.
At midday, while hurriedly swallowing down my real lunch, I tore open Molly’s bag and shook out the contents. Two hair ribbons, three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a pencil, a tiny seashell, a marble, a used lipstick, a small doll, two chocolate bars and 13 pennies. I smiled. How charming! Rising to work, I swept the desk clean into the wastebasket---leftover lunch, Molly’s junk and all. There wasn’t anything in there I needed.
That evening Molly came to stand beside me while I was reading the paper.
“Where’s my bag ”
“What bag ”
“You know, the one I gave you this morning.”
“I left it at the office, why ”
“I forgot to put this note in it.” She handed over the note.
“Besides, I want it back.”
“Why ”
“Those are my things in the bag, Daddy, the ones I really like. I thought you might like to play with them, but now I want them back. You didn’t lose the bag, did you, Daddy ” Tears puddled in her eyes.
“Oh,no, I just forgot to bring it home,” I lied.
“Bring it tomorrow, okay ” As she hugged my neck with relief, I unfolded the note that had not gotten into the bag: “I love you, Daddy.” Oh. And uh-oh. I looked long at the face of my child. She had given me her treasures—all that a 7-year-old held dear. Love in a paper bag,and I had missed it—not only missed it, but had thrown it away because “there wasn’t anything in there I needed.” It wasn’t the first or the last time I felt ashamed wearing the title of father.

Paragraph 1:
It was a long trip back to the office. I picked up the wastebasket and poured the contents on my desk. I was carefully sorting it all out. After removing the dirt off and spraying the whole thing with breath freshener to kill the smell of food, I carefully smoothed out the bag and put the treasures inside. I carried the whole thing home gingerly, like an injured kitten. That evening,I returned it to Molly. After dinner,I asked Molly to tell me about the stuff in the bag,and so she took it all out a piece at a time and placed the objects in a row on the dining room table. Everything had a story, a memory, or was attached to dreams and imaginary friends. I managed to say “I see” very wisely several times. And, as a matter of fact, I did see.
Paragraph 2:
To my surprise, Molly gave the bag to me once again several days later. The same bag and same stuff inside. I felt forgiven, and trusted and loved. And a little more comfortable wearing the title of father. Over several months, the bag with the note in went with me from time to time. In time Molly turned her attention to other things. She found other treasures, lost in new games, and grew up. I was left holding the bag. She gave it to me one morning and never asked for its return. And so I have it still.
Passage 2 儿子花钱买父亲的时间
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A man came home from work late, tired and irritated(不耐烦的), to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question ”
“Yeah sure, what is it ” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour ”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing ” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour ” pleaded the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10 ”
The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money ” he thought to himself. After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son ” he asked.
“No, daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.
“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱巴巴的) bills.

With holding back tears in his eyes, the little boy slowly and carefully counted out his money, and then looked up at his father, replying, “Because I didn’t have enough before, but now I do.” with big blue eyes shining with tears.
Paragraph 2:
Not knowing what his son meant, the father just stood there, waiting for his boy’s explanation. Wiping away his tears and an innocent smile appearing on his face, the boy requested in a relieved voice, “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour from you Please come home early tomorrow. I want to have dinner with you.” Hearing the boy’s small but sincere request, the father couldn’t hold back his tears. Realizing he was too busy with his business to spare some time with his beloved ones, he gathered his son into his arms and apologized again and again, “Sorry..., and I promise I’ll be back early tomorrow.”
Passage 3 妈妈失约我生气
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As I sat in the second-floor window of our school house that afternoon, my heart began to sink further with each passing car. This was a day I’d looked forward to for weeks: Miss Pace’s fourth-grade, end-of-the year party.
I had happily volunteered my mother when Miss Pace requested cookie volunteers. But two o'clock passed, and there was no sign of her. Most of the other mothers had already come and gone, dropping off their offerings of chips and cupcakes.
"Don't worry, Robbie, she'll be along soon," Miss Pace said as I gazed down at the street, holding out hope that my mother would carry with a tin her famous cookies.
The three o'clock bell rang and I grabbed my book bag from my desk and shuffled(拖着脚步)out the door for home.
On the four-block walk to our house, I plotted my revenge(复仇) . I would slam the front door upon entering, refuse to return her hug when she rushed over to me, and vow never to speak to her again.
The house was empty when I arrived and I looked for a note on the refrigerator that might explain my mother's absence, but found none. My chin trembled with a mixture of heartbreak and anger. For the first time in my life, my mother had let me down.
I was lying face-down on my bed upstairs when I heard her come through the front door.
"Robbie." she called out a bit urgently, "where are you "
I remained silent. When she entered my room and sat beside me on my bed, I didn't move but instead stared blankly into my pillow refusing to acknowledge her presence.
"I'm so sorry, honey." she said. "I just forgot. I got busy and forgot-plain and simple."
I still didn't move "Don't forgive her, "I told myself,
Then my mother did something completely unexpected. She began to laugh. I was sceptical. How could she laugh at a time like this I rolled over and faced her, ready to let her see the anger and disappointment in my eyes.

Paragraph 1:
Surprisingly my mother wasn't laughing at all, but she was crying. Tears trickling down her cheeks, she murmured:" How come such important moment slip from my memory How should I have been so careless I'm so sorry to have let you down." She sank in the chair near my bed with sorrow and regret, her head bowing over her arms and her body shaking with sob. Never had I seen my mother cry. I was frozen with shock. I desperately rack my brains to seek for a few words of comfort, but the sight of tearful mother dumbed the words in my throat, making me utterly speechless.
Paragraph 2:
“ It's okay,Mom.” I stammered(结巴)as I reached out and gently touched her hair. "I'm sorry to have gotten you wrong. The party went smoothly and nobody was aware of your absence. Don't take it so seriously. It’s no big deal." My words, too powerless to express my heart, prompted my mother to sit up and wipe off her tears. A slight smile began to crease her tear-stained cheeks. Awkward, I rewarded her with a smile. Pulling me to her, she held me in a long and silent hug. My hug could mean a gesture of forgiveness. I decided that I would hold on just a little bit longer.
Passage 4 最美的歌声
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A Sweet Song
"Nothing will ever be the same again," Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad's work for them. His tears had warmed Ally's cheeks; her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.
Ally looked at her father's picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly. "I miss you, Dad," she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler(林中莺).
Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with bluegray wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird. "Ally, I bet if we search real hard, we'll see this little guy together some day."
They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable, "If only I could get that good feeling back," she thought, sighing.
Staring at the bird, suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbing the little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. "Please let me see the warbler," she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.

Paragraph 1:
Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. Some things never change, Ally thought. Quickening her pace, she hurried to the rock by the stream where she and her father used to sit and eat lunch. She sat on it, with her face toward the sun. Overhead the sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place in their nests. Their sweet songs echoed throughout the woods. Ally felt content for the first time in a long while. She could almost hear her father’s laughter in the gentle breeze as she listened for the sweet song of the special bird. All too soon, the sun disappeared behind thick gray clouds.
Paragraph 2:
Determined to start out again the next morning, she was about to head home when a ringing birdsong floated down to her. It was prettier than any she had heard before. An excited feeling bubbled up inside Ally as she searched the sky. A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn’t believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around, as if it were waiting for something. Ally blinked back tears. “Thanks, Dad,” she whispered slowly lifting her camera and taking careful aim. “Things will be different without you. I’ll always miss our times together, but I feel better now.”
Passage 5 伟大的母爱
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Every year on my birthday, from the time 1 turned 12, a white gardenia was delivered to my house in Bethesda, Maryland. No card or note came with it. Calls to the florist were always in vain—it was a cash purchase. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender’s identity and was just delighted in the beauty and fragrance of that magical, perfect white flower placed in soft pink tissue paper.
However, I never stopped imagining who the anonymous giver might be. My mother contributed to these imaginings. And at that time, she’d ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special kindness showing appreciation. As a teenager, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy I fell in love or one who hid noticed me even though I didn’t know him.
When I was 17, a boy broke my heart. The night he called for the last time, I cried myself to sleep. When I awoke in the morning, there was a line of words on my mirror in red lipstick. I thought about that quotation from Emerson for a long time, and until my heart healed and went to get the glass cleaned, my mother knew everything was all right again. One month before my high school graduation, my father died of a heart attack. My feelings ranged from grief to abandonment, fear and overwhelming anger; my dad was missing some of the most important events in my life. I became completely uninterested in my coming graduation, the play and the prom. But my mother, in the midst of her own grief, would not hear of my skipping any of those things.
The day before my father died, my mother and I had gone shopping for a prom dress. We'd found a spectacular, and impressive one, with yards and yards of dotted Swiss in red, white and blue.

Paragraph 1:
It made me feel like a film star, but it was the wrong size. Although I liked it very much, I felt quite sorry for its wrong size. The next day, my father died, and I had no time to deal with the dress, so I threw it at random. However, until the day before the prom, I found a new dress was hung in the living room it was the right size! My mother did it. Relief and gratitude filled my heart.
Paragraph 2:
She always loved her children all the way. She not only would come up with a variety of ways to meet her children's needs, but also would be very artistic to show her love to her children. For example, delivering a white gardenia to my house every year on my birthday was a magical and mysterious incident to me all the time. But I didn't know the truth until my mother died because the gardenia stopped coining after that year. And at that time, I could not stop my tears of gratitude rolling down.
Passage 6 母亲的礼物
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I lay on my bed, legs leaning against the wall, desperately wishing my mother would call. But I remembered the last time I'd seen her, right before the train for Providence pulled out of the station, “You know how expensive it is to call,” she said, then hugged me tight and said good- bye.
This was my first birthday away from home. I missed my mom, missed my sister, and most certainly missed the special pound cake my mother always made for my birthday. Since getting to college that year, I would watch jealously as the other freshmen received care packages from their parents on their birthdays--and even on ordinary days. Big boxes containing summer slacks and blouses, packages of M&M's and Snickers, things they needed and things they didn't. Instead of feeling thrilled about my upcoming eighteenth birthday, I felt empty. I wished my mom would send me something, too, but I knew that she couldn’t afford presents or the postage. She had done her best with my sister and me--raising us by herself. The simple truth was there just was never enough money.
But that didn’t stop her from filling us with dreams. “You can be anything you want to be,” she would tell us. “Politicians, dancers, writers -- you just have to work for it; you have to get an education.”
Thanks to my mom's sacrifices and big dreams, I’d made it to the Ivy League: Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
As I was recalling these things, my roommate joined me on the bed. “Hey. After we study, let's buy ice cream and cake.” I nodded, closed my eyes, and imagined the cake Mom would have made. Mmm. I could see the golden yellow of each of the twelve eggs, and I could almost smell the vanilla(香草) filling the house while the cake baked.

As I daydreamed, there was a knock on the door. My roommate opened it to find a deliveryman asking for me. He handed her a large box, which she carefully placed on the desk near my bed. “Open it”. I did, and inside was a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. In icing were the words: “Happy Birthday, Sande! Love, Mom.” I was filled with excitement, as if Mom were right there hugging me close.
Paragraph 2:
How had she managed to afford it I felt as if I were back at home with her, safe and secure while she sang and told me how much she loved having me in her life. I ran out to the hall and knocked on my dormmates’ doors. “Birthday cake,” I called. I cut cake for the students gathering in my room and watched their faces as they ate, because I didn't need to eat to feel both full and rich inside.

No Time
With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone,“No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK ”
Holding her oil painting ,she frowned (皱眉) ,and then searched for her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily,“Dad, you haven't seen it yet.”
He smiled at her saying,“No time, baby. I will see it later.”He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把…砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy ”She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too!She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail, her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly , the morning incident clicked in her mind, Softly, she asked,“Honey, did I do anything wrong ”

She ducked her head, apologizing,“Sorry, mom!”It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.
Passage 8 父亲最好的花
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My Dad’s Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times, I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems (茎) were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them”, he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us: “Do not touch daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

However, my sister didn’t know why no one appreciated her efforts. The shock was too strong and we all waited for dad’s arrival with anxiety.
Paragraph 2:

He looked toward the street to see if any neighborhood children had done it. Then he entered the living room and looked left and right and mom in silence. Finally mom looked at dad and with a nice tone she said: “No outsider did this great job, only your lovely daughter Maria.” Hearing this, my dad’s face changed from tense to a smile and then he said: “Do I have a better flower than my lovely daughter ” My elder sister smiled and hugged dad strongly.

"Missy," I cried to my wife, "did you put the banana skin on my desk " "No, honey, Meghan probably did, "As I'd feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn't done her job: defend my desk against the invader--our naughty girl. I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first, I could concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked(分心的). I had not counted on the arrival of the "bib-bibs"("Bib-bibs" were birds). "Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!" Meghan screamed excitedly. her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
"In a second. Just let me finish this question," I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib-bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his nonexistent ear. "Bib-bibs, Dumpty, bib-bibs!" Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.

Paragraph 1:
Unfortunately, she came again soon, with her shoes in hands and preparing for an outing. She stood at the desk, and gazed up at me, waiting for me to nod my head. "Dumpty is crying. Go play with him!" I coaxed, pretending not to know what she wanted to do. Hearing this, she reluctantly laid her shoes down and toddled towards the window. Like a mother caring for her baby, she stroked her doll tenderly as she hummed softly to him. Then I turned around and set to work again, pleased that my girl could concentrate on her doll. However, not long after that, she returned, saying excitedly, "He's sleeping!" "Meghan!" I snapped, "Daddy is busy now!"
Paragraph 2:
Out of the corner of my eye I could see the little girl sobbing because I didn't have time for her. I shook my head helplessly, unsure of what to do. How I wished my wife would come back home and keep her company! After a few silent minutes, I stood up from the seat and slowly walked over to her, trying to comfort her, but she just wiped her eyes and looked away. "I'm sorry, sweetie!" I said gently, reaching out my hands. Out of my expectation, my girl threw herself in my arms and easily forgave my rudeness. Overjoyed, I decided to take a break from work, and went for an outing. Suddenly it dawned on me that the best way to be a good parent is to spend time with your kids.

One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it! But when she saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her. Her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home, we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny paid off the pearls.

Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Okay ” “Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss, gently and calmly. “Good night, little one.”

Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her story, Jenny was waiting anxiously for him on the bed. When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent-minded, with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly. When the story came to an end, unexpectedly, Jenny offered her beloved necklace to her father, with her fingers trembling automatically. No one knew what the necklace meant to her. She whispered to her father, softly and gently, “Daddy, you know I love you more than the necklace.” Then, the necklace slid into her father’s hands determinedly.

Holding the genuine necklace in her hand, Jenny lifted her lip, tears beginning to blur her vision.
