Passage 1 打屁股教育
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was for.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner ” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”
No amount of pleading (恳求)or scolding her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally, her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone ”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

Paragraph 1:
By now we were standing in the long Holiday line to pay the bill, and I figure it was a good chance. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, “I want that telephone,” over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, “Becky, you better get up by the count of three or else. One...Two...Three.” Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, “I want a new car, I want a new house. I want some jewelry, I want...” Shocked, I stood up.
Paragraph 2:
“Mama, stop. Mama, get up,” I tearfully pleaded. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to sporadically clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the store, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, “Your mom got you good. I bet you’ll never try that again.” And I didn’t, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective than any physical mark.
Passage 2 教育的秘诀
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area:Western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.
School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth grade class who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. But in fact, humans particularly teenagers rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Versions of unemployment marched before my eyes.

Paragraph 1:
After class, I took a deep breath and walked into his office. I said nothing, just thinking that I would be fired. To my great surprise, my boss didn't glare at me with burning eyes. Instead, he patiently named my problems that as teacher I shouldn't have ignored the bad behavior of my students. We discussed how I could deal with the situation I met. Finally, I was encouraged and full of confidence when leaving the office.
Paragraph 2
Fifteen years later, I still drive that winding road to the same school. My boss and I always sit together, talking about the new students and their problems. In fact, he becomes a teacher of me by teaching me the truth of education— “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.” Thanks to the help I received from him that first year, I have grown as a successful educator as he is now.
Passage 3 教育的意义
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A girl inspired her mother to start a community learning centre for the people in their community to reflect one education and learning. “My ambition is to be a teacher. When I see my teacher in my Tamil school teaching us,I want to do the same for other children when I grow up.” Those words were spoken by a nines old girl from Sungai Petani at Kelip-Kelip. The girl was asked by her mother to share what her dreams were. The mother,a single parent with four young children, one of them a child with special needs, was one of the speakers at the session(会议).
Why did the mother call her daughter up to the front to share her dream Because the daughter, with her passion for studies, inspired her mother to start a community learning centre.“I cannot afford to send my daughter for extra classes,so I want to start a learning centre that not only can help her,but also others who want to learn but do not have the opportunity,” said the mother. Education for this mother and daughter is a ticket to a better life, and it was truly moving to hear them share their dreams that are selfless.
I was moved to hear them, inspired even,I did feel slightly conflicted(斗争).Here I was,a college dropout who is having a second try in her early 30s not because she has to,but because she wants to. Having gone through my life and reaching where I am today without the much desired college diploma,I find the education is a sure fire ticket to success.
And what valuable learning she is experiencing at this young age, that with her education she can one day impart knowledge and skills to other children who come from similar backgrounds to hers. If at the age of nine she has such noble dreams,I am certain this girl, should be given the opportunity to pursue the education she so dreams, will be an instrumental agent of change in the society. Isn’t that inspiring

Paragraph 1:
To me,it is not education that makes the person but the learning that the person does. There is a clear distinction between education and learning. What happens in a classroom, what is taught to students—that is the education. Learning Learning is what the student takes from the education that is given to them. Education is passive, learning is active. Learning can be done anywhere, sometimes much better outside the classroom.
Paragraph 2:
As I was listening to the two of them,I was thinking all of this in my head. How do I,as the next speaker,go up there after them, talk about my dreams and about pursuing them despite not having a degree Should I remove that part from my talk and change my opening statement,“I am a college dropout”? How do I look at the mother and daughter and tell them that education is important but it is not everything But then again,I was quite wrong in thinking that way. It is easy for me to say that education is not everything.
Passage 4 善举改变一个孩子
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
After 20 years as a full-time wife and mother, I became a school bus driver. I was happy in my new work because I loved kids.
When I think about my years of bus driving, I can’t help thinking of Charlie.
Charlie, with blond hair and big gray eyes, began riding my bus in September of my fourth year driving.
From that day on, Charlie was a trial. If a fight broke out, I didn’t have to turn my head to know who had started it. If a girl was crying, chances were Charlie had pulled her hair. No matter how I spoke to him, gently or firmly, he wouldn’t say a word. He’d just stare at me with those big gray eyes of his.
I learned that Charlie’s father was dead and he didn’t live with his mother. I was sure that this child needed to feel some warmth from me. So, when he’d pass by, I’d pat him on the arm or sometimes gave him a hug.
One day, a girl gave me a small tin heart on which were written, “I love Polly and Polly loves me.” Considering it as a qualification to my job, I put it up on the dashboard, but later found it gone. Everybody thought it was Charlie who took it but he refused to admit it.
I asked him to come forward, stuck my hand into his pocket and immediately I felt it ---the small tin heart. Charlie stared at me and seemed to be waiting for what he’d come to expect from the world. I was about to pull the tin heart out of Charlie’s pocket when I stopped myself. Let him keep it, a voice seemed to whisper.
“It must have fallen off before I got here,” I said to the kids. Without a word, Charlie returned to his seat. When he got off at his stop, he didn’t so much as glance at me.
That summer Charlie moved away.

Paragraph 1:
A dozen years after retirement I was in a department store, when someone said tentatively, “Polly ” I turned to see a middle-aged man who was approaching me. His face didn’t look familiar until I noticed his big gray eyes. There was no doubt that it must be Charlie. He told me he was living in the city and created a successful company. Then, to my surprise, he hugged me. After that, he pulled something from his pocket and held it up for me to see. You can probably guess what it was---the little tin heart that said, “I love Polly and Polly loves me.” He explained, “You were the only one who cared me at that time”. We hugged again, and went our separate ways.
Paragraph 2:
That night I thought over his words. When a child has made a mistake, what he needs is not punishment but care and love. In this situation, he is likely to keep dignity and move away his shortcomings. Before I fell asleep that day, I thanked God for giving me the opportunity to do a good deed.
Passage 5 不要对老人没有耐心

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched(栖息)on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this ” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this ” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this ”
At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this ”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this ”
A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.

Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me Will he think of me as a burden Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding
Paragraph2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best day.”
Passage 6 酸奶
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say,“It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕)frozen to his face, a worn out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt ” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He looked his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I am doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and we always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.

I am Sadie. I love oceans, especially the one near my grandma's house with beautiful shells. Why That's what I am about to tell you.
It all started when my parents divorced a few weeks ago. I had remained silent since then. So my mother decided to send me to Florida to live with my grandma.
On the way to my grandma’s house, my mother said, “Sadie, I know we are not the best family you can have and I truly apologize. I just do not know how to be a mother. But remember, Sadie, whatever happened, I do love you." These words made me sadder.
When we arrived, Grandma told me to go upstairs and unpack my things while she spoke to my mother. When I saw a blue and green painted room with a huge window and a comfortable bed, I thought, Moving to Florida might not be that bad." I comforted myself as I walked towards the window. I opened the curtains and saw sky-blue waves slowly washing away the sand on the beach and sea birds flying in the clear sky. The ocean was only a few hundred meters away from here.
After my mother left, Grandma softly touched my shoulder, “I want to take you to the place I called 'the Big Blue’. And I think you might like it." (I guess you could know where it is.)
Before I stepped on the sand I could smell the ocean. Together we enjoyed the sunset with a whole lot of yellow and orange. Suddenly she picked out the most beautiful shell I had ever seen in my life. It was almost gold, shining in the sunlight. I couldn’t move my eyes off it.

Paragraph 2:

Your mother rang me this morning, telling me that you love oceans. Therefore, I brought you here. Also, I hope you can get inspiration and courage." Hearing this I looked up at the blue sky and the vast sea. Suddenly, I felt a little relaxed and natural, and held the firm belief that I must cheer up, just like the most beautiful shell, full of color.

When I was ten, I was suddenly very sad, for I had to move from the only home I had ever known. My whole life had been spent in that big old house which saw the laughter and tears of four generations.
When the final day came, I ran to the front of the house and sat alone, crying. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to see my grandfather. “It isn’t easy, is it, Billy " he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.
“Grandpa,” I replied how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends ”
“Goodbye is such a sad word," he said. "It seems too final, too cool, which has one thing in common: sadness.”
He gently took my hand in his. “Come with me, my friend,” he whispered.
We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where there was a huge red rose bush — his beloved rose bush.
"What do you see here, Billy ” he asked.
I looked at the flowers, not knowing what to say,"I see something beautiful, Grandpa."
“It isn’t just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It’s that special place in your heart that makes them so.” His eyes met mine again. “Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago—before your mother was even a dream. I put them into the soil the day my first son was bom. It was my way of saying thank you to God. That boy's name was Billy. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.
I saw my grandfather’s tears. I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse(嘶哑的).
"One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, went away to fight a great evil. He and I walked to the train station together... Three months later a telegram came. My son had died in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I say to him in his life was goodbye."

He asked his kids to move his bed next to the window, through which he could see his beloved rose bush. Eventually, I, as his oldest grandchild, was assigned to say goodbye to him. "Hello, Grandpa," I sniffed. His eyes slowly opened, "Hello, Billy, don't sob." He smiled. But I was out of control, crying outside. An uncle came to tell me that my grandfather had passed away. Passage 9 马戏团买票
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say ”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus
Actually, we were not wealthy in any sense. So, I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without. Now, who wants an ice cream ”
Passage 10 一只眼睛的母亲
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!”
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, “If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die ”
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!”
And to this, my mother quietly answered, “Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.” and she was soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So, I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed (流出 ) a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

My dearest son,
I think of you all the time and I’m sorry that I came to your house and scared your children. I had never thought my visit would bring so much unhappiness to you. However, I was really so happy when I heard you were coming for the reunion. I missed you day and night. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I’m terribly sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.
You see, when you were very little, you got into a terrible accident, as a result of which you lost one of your precious eyes. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with just one eye. It was too much for you—a young soul to endure such a cruel fact and a possible future full of challenges. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.
With all my love to you.
