Passage 1 我的圣诞节礼物
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart, I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas!” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

Paragraph l:
I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my younger son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of the gifts of his and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly my wife walked up to me. It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I think she was showing off her efforts on the decoration but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read. “We will never forget you. Merry Christmas!” Under the letter was a watch which was clicking with delight. I was moved to tears.
Passage 2 假扮圣诞老人帮助人
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma ” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money,” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(放假) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street form Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
Paragraph 2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open and finally it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time, I decided to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
Passage 3 圣诞节的靴子
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was the late 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底)were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way, I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

Paragraph 1:
As I continued walking, I began to reconsider my plan. I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while my mother was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents.Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I realized that 25 dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way towards lights, decorations and a turkey. After finishing shopping, I went home.
Paragraph 2:
With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there, dumb founded. Holding back the tears, I said, “Merry Christmas!” That day I got enough hug sand kisses from Mum to last two lifetimes.
Passage 4 第一次过圣诞节
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.

Paragraph 1:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gjft for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I untied the ribbon with heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Paragraph 2:
Through tear-blurred eyes, 1 recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audiences of my sad story. The card read: “Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn’t be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness.

Passage 6 打开心结---圣诞树
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1971 we were living in Wichita,Kansas—Lincoln was about seven,Brendan was three and Kristen was a baby. Mom was staying with us during the holidays. On Christmas Eve I stayed up very late. I was totally alone with my thoughts, alternating between joy and sorrow, and I got to thinking about my paper route(送报历程),that tree, what my mother had said to me and how dad had tried to make things better.
I heard a noise in the kitchen and discovered that it was mom. She couldn't sleep either and had gotten up to make herself a cup of hot tea which made her feel better. As she waited for the water to boil, she walked into the living room and discovered me there. She saw my open Bible and asked me what I was reading. When I told her,she asked if I would read it to her and I did.
When the kettle began to whistle, she went and made her tea. She came back. I told her how happy I was that she was with us for Christmas and how I wished that dad could have lived to see his grandchildren and to enjoy this time because he always loved Christmas so much. It got very quiet for a moment and then she said,” Do you remember that time on Twelve Mile Road when you bought that tree with your paper route money ”
“Yes,” I said,“ I've just been thinking about it, you know.”
She hesitated for a long moment,as though something was bottled up so deeply inside her soul that it might take surgery to get it out. Finally, great tears rolled down her face and she cried,” Oh, son, please forgive me. That time and that Christmas have been a burden on my heart for twenty- five years. I wish your dad were here so I could tell him how sorry I am for what I said.”

Paragraph 1:
The image of an excited me dragging a pretty Christmas tree home appeared clearly before my eyes. You can’t imagine how happy I was when I bought this tree with all the money, I earned by paper route. When my mom saw it, however, she exclaimed, “You’ve used up all the money to just buy a tree! ” All my enthusiasm faded away. She went on blaming me for the stupid idea of spending all the money on a dumb tree that would be thrown out and burned in a few days. I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing and started to cry. That was the worst Christmas.
Paragraph 2:
“We were so poor at the time that we even couldn’t afford the daily food, but it didn’t mean that losing my temper and hurting your feelings were right. I’m so sorry to you. I’ve wanted to say this for so long, and it came out finally.” We both cried and then we hugged each other closely. I forgave her, of course, since now I can understand the responsibility to a family. All my bitterness and sorrow in these years were gone. And I believe this the best gift for Christmas, understanding and forgiveness.

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie. —Tenneva Jordan
I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom’s “grown up” girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒) presents, she would sigh and warn us, “There won’t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed.” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase “giving is better than receiving,” but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn’t get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
“Here’s another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom’s. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother’s handwriting. “Mom, I can’t…”

Paragraph 1:
I was stopped by my mother’s eager, joyful look. “Let’s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it.” It was a blow dryer. Though this may seem but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was stunned. In my world, where receiving lately outweighed giving, my mom’s act of selflessness was incomprehensible. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas so-could have a few more presents.
Paragraph 2:
I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life whom I adore, I can now understand my mom’s actions. I see actually, she was not “giving up her Christmas” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom’s simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom’s giving, I will choose to give in my life.
Passage 8 假期的意义

As the Christmas approached, I felt increasingly tired. Ads started the countdown (倒数): six more, five more, four more shopping days. It was impossible that I would ever get the last gift bought, the last meal cooked.
Russ’s sense of tension equalled mine. Even Brad began to look stressed as he moved through countless festivities. Of us all, only Andrea, who plays the flute (长笛) in the school orchestra, remained relaxed. Unsurprising, I thought, since responsibility rested so lightly on her.
I was puzzled, though, by a sense of distance about her, and she seemed to avoid when I questioned why she came home late from school or left unusually early in the morning.
On one of those last mornings, I baked and decorated cookies. There were several interruptions, and I laid behind schedule. I set about tidying the kitchen. I opened the dishwasher, but it was full, and not of clean dishes. Andrea had loaded the machine after breakfast and forgotten to start it.
Suddenly it all seemed too much: the dirty dishes, the too-tight schedule, Andrea’s carelessness. The holiday season was overwhelming. It didn’t seem worth it.
I rushed to do the dishes before picking up my daughter at school to drive her to her flute lesson. I pulled up outside at 3 p.m., still annoyed. I almost weakened at the sight of the funny, half-skipping run of her. She jumped happily into the car, sharing with school news. But as she saw my face, her happiness gave way to curiosity.
“What’s wrong ”
I told her: she couldn’t remember anything; she was untidy, inconsiderate. “I don’t know what you’re thinking, you go dreaming along...”
We had nearly reached the music school before I ran out of things to say. Besides me, Andrea sat quietly. I didn’t look at her. When I stopped the car, she got out and walked wordlessly away.
Then I felt ashamed. I was labouring over every detail of the holiday, trying to make sure nothing was forgotten. Yet something was missing.

Paragraph 1:
That evening, we rushed through our dinner because it was the night of the high-school Christmas concert. Along with other families, Russ, Brad and I took our seats in the hall. I saw Andrea, in her beautiful dress, sit down at her music stand. As the orchestra started, my sense of tension began to fade away. I listened, relaxed and moved by the special atmosphere that these young people created. Old and new songs about snow and deer took turns with Christmas music. Everything seems worth it.
Paragraph 2:
Everything seemed fine until the music teacher announced the final section, “Andrea Hill’s solo!” My tears burst out as Andrea rose and, to the applause of that hall, took her position on the stage. Just before she raised the flute to her lips, she looked at Russ, Brad and me, and gave us a wide smile. I remembered my daughter practising, the extra time spent at music school; the details ignored, the little things undone. With her love, she had presented me with the music and the meaning of the holidays. That was Andrea’s gift.
Passage 9 圣诞礼物

Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were "tourist traps" and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and frustrated, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman's table.
"Merry Christmas," he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. "How much are they "
"Two franes, sir."
The sailor put a twenty frane note in the woman's hand.
"I don't have change, sir," she said. "I'll get some from the waiter."
"No, ma'am," said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek. "This is my Christmas present for you."

Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand. He picked out a red flower and placed it on our table. “Merry Christmas” he greeted us in a cheerful voice. Before we could say “Thank you”, he went to other tables. In an instant, everyone in the room was presented with flowers, including the waiter and the piano player. In the bright light, the flowers were glowing in full bloom. These magical flowers melted our frustrated hearts and blew away all the unpleasant moods.
Paragraph 2:
The piano player came alive and pleasant music filled the whole room. A festival atmosphere drowned all of us. We merrily danced to the joyful music, singing, laughing and wishing each other good luck. The old flower woman also joined us, unable to conceal her excitement and gratitude. The spirit of Christmas came back to us again. It brought all of us together in this small restaurant on a foreign land. All this was due to a young American sailor, who, through his kindness and generosity brightened our paths.
Passage 10 为妈妈买圣诞节礼物

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they had a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby hand been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. "This is useless, even if I do have an idea, I don't have money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful and so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when his eyes caught the gimmer(微光) of the setting sun's ray reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shinny dime(十分钱硬币).
Never before had anyone felt so wealthy as Bobby felt at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside it to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him. Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother as a Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you." As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

When the shop owner handed the roses to him softly, Bobby stunned for an instant, with hesitation, and queried, "Could only a dime cover the costs of so many flowers " With his eyelids flickering swiftly, the shop owner grinned at him, "Of course!" Scarcely had Bobby heard this answer when a flood of ecstasy flashed across his face. "Thank you! Merry Christmas!" replied Bobby, taking over the roses. He seized the roses in hands firmly, for fear that it could be an illusion. Considering the awful and erratic weather, the shop owner offered to provide him an umbrella, while Bobby abnegated it politely.
Paragraph 2:

Soon after, in his vision emerged his home. Standing ahead of the door in gasp, he took a deep breath and stepped in. The instant he was in he exclaimed, "Mom!", but around the house echoed only his voice. Gripped by a gust of worry, he was quite at a loss. Just at this moment, in his ears came the familiar clumps. Turning around, Bobby saw his mother carrying with a pair of boots which he had desired for since long. He presented the gift to her and whispered "Mom, merry Christmas!" "Thanks, my dear!", she embraced him tightly and planted a tender kiss on his face, tears of happiness gurgling down her cheeks.
