Passage 1 不以貌取人
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that’s what we had heard.
His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.
There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan.
One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, "Hey, girl!" in a gruff, low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.
"Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home,” he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.
As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch. We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind hearthidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Unfortunately, his family never seemed to enjoy our company. They never smiled or welcomed us in.

Paragraph 1:
Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him. We shared with him our colorful experience at school while he kept giving out his luscious fruits to us as usual. As time went by, we seemed to be more a family than good friends and his family gradually came to greet us with a warm smile. But one summer, we were informed that he was seriously ill and we were anxious and restless, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. The next day, we rushed straight to the hospital to see his health condition. Weak as he was, he comforted us that it wasn’t a big deal. It was from his family that we knew the truth. Old Man Donovan had fell from a tree while looking after the fruits and his head was seriously hurt and need an operation. The operation might not succeed and it was a gamble whether he would live or die.
Paragraph 2:
The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. Hearing the bad news, my sister and I just couldn’t believe it until we went back home and saw his smiling face on the wall. I felt a lump in my throat, tears welling up in my eyes. The family approached and welcomed us. “ I’m sorry for your loss.” I gave them a big hug. On my way back home, the wind whistled through the trees, as if mourning for the death of Donovan. I realized gone were the days when we sat together chatting with each other. I realized gone were the days when we were lucky enough to have a taste of the luscious fruit grown by him. However, he left us a hidden treasure-- his kind heart, which shall never die away with the passage of time.

A young man went to visit the oldest and wisest man in the village for some advice on how he could become rich.
“Treasure is yours to be had at the top of Yonder Mountain,” advised the wise old man as he pointed to a tall mountain in the distance. “You must travel on foot to the top of the mountain. There you will find riches beyond your belief. Once you leave the top of the mountain, whatever remains will be lost forever.”
The young man could hardly wait until the morning when he was to meet with the wise old man for final instructions. When he arrived at the wise old man's home, he saw a long, thick log lying on the ground in front of the house.
“You must carry this log on your journey to the top of the mountain, and it is a necessary part of your journey. You must take it with you to the top of the mountain to claim your treasure,” explained the wise old man.
The young man was not pleased with this sudden surprise, but he respected the wise old man and as he lifted the long, heavy log onto his shoulders and struggled down the road towards the mountain, he realized that the trip would not be as easy as he thought.
After he was walking for a while, a woodsman came up to him and said, “It looks like that log is pretty heavy. Would you like me to cut some of it off to make it lighter ”
The young man was exhausted, so he said, “I suppose that a little bit cut off the end wouldn't hurt.” And the woods man cut two inches off the end.
A while later the young man met a farmer on his way back from the fields. And the farmer helped him cut two inches off the end.
At the bottom of the mountain, the young man met up with a trapper who helped him cut four more inches off the log.

Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room. She had not competed since the accident. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. Today was very important in her comeback (复出). "If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year."
Before Laurie had her accident, everyone had said that she was the one to beat.
She thought back to that car accident where her right knee was badly injured. She spent six total months on recovery, treatment and practice because she hoped to regain her skill.
"Hello, Laurie," one of her friends burst in. "How's the knee Is it going to slow you down "
"I guess we'll find out tonight," Laurie said.
"There's a girl named Jinny, strong in everything. She's the only real competitor you have to beat," the friend said and hurried out.
Hearing that, Laurie decided to show her most difficult jump. "If I don't try it, I won't stand a chance," she thought. "Does anyone believe that I can still win "
Suddenly her right knee sent pain up and down her leg. The doctor said it would do that for a while. "What makes you think you have a chance tonight " she said to herself.
After the pain passed, she moved slowly to warm up. Then she said firmly, "I must win!"
At that moment, a young woman hurried in with a skate equipment bag. She put some of her belongings onto a chair. Her bag fell to the floor. "Hi, I'm Jinny Jordan," she said.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. " So this is my competitor," thought Laurie. "Because of her, I may lose tonight."
"I'm Laurie Collins," Laurie told Jinny. "Something fell out of your bag, Jinny."
As Jinny began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," someone called, "your tape of music is missing. You are the next one! Laurie, after Jinny."
"Oh, my God! I thought I had handed it in hours ago, the green box with my name on," screamed Jinny, hurrying out.

Passage 4 说谎的故事
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 pm. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car. I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn't show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong.
They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all."

A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him,“I'm angry, not with you but with myself. You see. I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I'm going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years”.
Paragraph 1:
But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it's dark. You can't walk back. "I begged. My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down. And I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson.

Missus Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.
On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal- no! Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all!
When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, “Well, I will buy this pair.”
Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies’ rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

In the busy city of New York, such an astonishing thing happened.
On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. Though people were quickly going home for the weekend, many of them slowed down their paces and put some money into the hat of the young man.
The next day, the young artist came to the gate again, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. He took out a large piece of paper, laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he adjusted the violin and began playing. It sounded more pleasant.
Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with people who were all attracted by the words on the paper, which said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it soon.’’
Seeing this, people wondered what it could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, "Yes, it's you. You do come here. I know that you’re an honest man and will certainly come here.”
The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang ”
The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something ”
“It’s a lottery ticket,” said the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is this yours ” he asked. George nodded happily.
A few days ago, George Sang bought a lottery ticket. The awards opened yesterday and he won a prize of $500,000. So, he felt very happy and then he took out 50 dollars and put in the hat yesterday. However, unfortunately the lottery ticket was also thrown in.
The violinist was a student at an Arts College in Vienna and had booked a ticket and would fly that morning.

Then why didn't you take the lottery ticket for yourself ” The violinist said, "Although I don’t have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won’t be happy forever.”

My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, “My ears, Mommy.”
She said, “No. Many people are deaf. But they are doing well in their life. You keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.”
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated(深思) the correct answer. So, this time I told her, “Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.”
She looked at me and told me, “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.”
Over the years my mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was: “No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.”
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to grandpa. She asked me, “Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear ”
I was surprised when she asked me this on this occasion. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me, “This question is very important. How you answer it shows whether you have learned about life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given you a reason why. But today is the day you will know the answer.”
I look puzzled.
“All your previous answers-ears, eyes, hands, heart... They are all very important to yourself. But this time I need you to think of something that is important to others.”

I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.” I saw her eyes well up with tears.
Paragraph 2:
“Mom, I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder too.” And silently, my mother put her head on my shoulder and started to cry. I was touched through experiences, memories, books, stories, animals, angels, and most of all other people. People have moved me and molded(对……影响重大)me with moments of love and examples of kindness.
One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a minimum wage mill(工厂)worker, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at Christmas rather than happy.
I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn’t much but maybe I could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car I noticed the Salvation Army(救世军)bell ringer at the entrance. I felt bad again because I didn’t feel I could spare anything to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt a twinge of jealousy when I saw it. “How nice,” I thought, “Would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car, though, was an ancient sedan(轿车)more beat-up and rusty than the one I was driving.
A man hopped(冲)out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bell ringer without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children in tow(紧随着). Her clothes looked as worn out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bell ringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle(钱罐).

Paragraph 1:
I stood there for a minute in astonishment. “Maybe,” I thought to myself, “it’s better to be rich on the inside instead of the outside.” That rich man should have done something to help the poor, but he didn’t. Sometimes it was really wrong to judge a person by his or her appearance. I really had respect for the poor mother from the bottom of my heart. She set a good example for her children to follow.
Paragraph 2:
In that second a warmth touched me, my jealousy and hatred(憎恨)left me, and all the love and joy that are Christmas filled me. I fished a bill out of my own purse, dropped it in the Salvation Army kettle, and wished the bell ringer a merry Christmas. I found a few fun things to give my kids and drove home with my heart singing. I knew it was going to be a wonderful Christmas. I could hardly wait to see my children enjoying the presents bought for them, including a special gift—love for those in need.

To celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.
“Everything important to me was on that computer,” said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic(护理人员). “My classwork, every paper I’d written, and all the programs I needed for my paramedic tests. Every letter I was working on for job applications. I felt sick.”
Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, is an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naive(天真). But he needed a computer, so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs.
“I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cellphone number and called it.
“This guy with a thick accent told me he had my computer,” Fortune said. “He told me the story and said it was his fault. I thought it was a scam(骗局). I told him if he really had the computer, he should take it to the police.”
Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime(十分硬币)left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at the door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
“What can I do for you ” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while. “Would you please give me some...a drink of water ” the boy dare not look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give himself energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you ” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he felt stronger physically. It also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give her the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her. He saw her lying on the bed and recognized her at once. Her lovely face looked pale. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case. Luckily, after a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side.
Paragraph 2:
The bill was sent to her room. Hesitantly she took it. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally, she opened it, on the side of which a note caught her attention. She read these words, “Paid in full with a glass of milk.” signed by Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, “Thank you, God.”
