A Simple Thank
I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.
Mr. Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of text book onto the floor.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: “Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school. Our school had a very special tradition on the last day. All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving goodbye to the kids as the bused pilled out with their horns honking. But on that particular day, Steven walked slowly to the bus, his head down, tears in his eyes. He boarded the bus reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr. Rowe. “I don’t want to leave you.” He sobbed. With red-rimmed eyes, Mr. Rowe comforted him, “I will miss you, too.”
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr. Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps(海军) uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It was Steven! Mr. Rowe and I couldn’t believe our eyes. He saluted and hugged Mr. Rowe tightly! “I have come back to school today just to say thanks to you!” It is my hope that every teacher is blessed with such an experience of a former student coming back to say, simply to say a very simple THANKS.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the excellent children in the class.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U.S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been failing since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher; yet, still he failed.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone because no one cared. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
"Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.
"Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.
"… The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishment became more severe, he remained stubborn.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.
"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
"Steve! I care about you!"
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM !

A month ago,my 3 year old daughter met my fifth grade teacher. I had not seen Mrs. Elder since I invited her to my high school graduation. She was the only adult to join my living room dancing, and instead of feeling any embarrassed,I felt delighted. I have treasured that memory over the last dozen years, wondering if she was well. I figured she surely had retired, and as I began teaching full time I tried to put my finger on what it was that made her so important to me.
My mom ran into Mrs. Elder at University Place this fall. I say that like it is entirely natural, but I can only imagine running into my own students’ parents 20 years from now and having them remember me. What is it that makes her so memorable
They exchanged email addresses, and a few days later I was delighted to get an email from her. She said she’d love to meet with me. So one December night,Barbara Elder came back into my life.
I searched her face and she seemed just as I remembered her when I was 11 and graduating from elementary school in Chapel Hill. Her voice was calm and happy and kind. That’s the memory and the experience!I realized I have carried with me all these years. Elder presented a small gift to my daughter.
“This is for you,” she told my 3 year old,her voice comforting to hear even as an adult. My daughter knelt with her and together they tore open the wrapping paper to get a brightly colored calendar. “Do you know what this is?” Mrs. Elder asked, and my daughter shook her head. “This is to help us count to Christmas,” she said,“and since today is the first of December,we get to find number one.”

Paragraph 1:
As Mrs. Elder patiently explained its purpose,my daughter listened carefully and held it like a treasure. It seemed this was exactly where Mrs. Elder wanted to be,on a former student’s living room floor, introducing a calendar to a 3 year old. I think this method helped her students unlock aspects in themselves, like wonder and joy,to become explorers of themselves and their learning. Watching Mrs. Elder with my daughter,I felt a sense of new hope; this is the kind of teacher I want to become. And it turns out Mrs. Elder still had something to teach me.
Paragraph 2:
Rather than adding over excitement to a busy season, the calendar added wonder. Each day my daughter remembered to ask me for her chocolate; together we talked about what day it was and she hunted for the number. When she found the hidden piece, she examined it in delight and showed me. I smiled back, and each day silently thanked my fifth grade teacher, whose kindness had unlocked joy in my life once again.
Passage 5 老师偏心
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My best friend Lisa and I carefully wrote our words with a No. 2 pencil. We took turns writing down the sentences. "Dear Miss Hanley," we wrote, "you like Kathleen better than you like us. That isn't fair." Miss Hanley was our fourth-grade teacher. She was in her 20s, with short, dark, curly hair and lively grey eyes. It was her first-year teaching in our public school in the northeast Bronx.
"You're a very talented writer," Miss Hanley often told me. This excited me. A few weeks into this school year, Lisa and I had co-authored a play based on our favorite novel, Little Women. And we performed the play in front of the class. When the curtain came down, the applause from the students was light. But Miss Hanley clapped strongly, saying, "Great! Great!" Lisa and I ignored the other kids, and were high on her praise for days.
I didn't envy Lisa's relationship with Miss Hanley. Sharing Miss Hanley was a bond between us. In Miss Hanley's class, we behaved ourselves, although we couldn't help comparing ourselves with Kathleen, whose demeanor(风度)and dress were perfect. Kathleen lived in her family's big house with a beautiful garden. Lisa and I lived in small apartments. Her eyes were as huge as those of most film stars. She spoke softly and politely. Her hair was waved, clean and tidy. My hair was loose and wild. Lisa and I wore clothes that didn't always match. I sometimes wore my sister's hand-me-downs. Kathleen did best in her studies and of course Miss Hanley liked her. The funny thing is that I didn't like Kathleen and neither did Lisa. In fact, we didn't know why.
Lisa and I continued writing our note to Miss Hanley, "You call on Kathleen more than you call on us. You like her because she is a goody-goody(讨好卖乖的人).That's not fair! Just that we are not goody-goodies does not mean you should like us less."

Paragraph 1
My heart was pounding as we left the note before class on Miss Hanley's desk. We folded it in threes, so nobody else could see what was written. I was sure Miss Hanley was going to be very angry. It was a long and hard day. I regretted sending the note and was terrified of Miss Hanley's reaction. I couldn't concentrate in class, and kept sneaking glances at Lisa. She glanced back, looking equally upset.
Paragraph 2
At three o'clock, Miss Hanley asked us to stay after class "for a few minutes". Lisa and I stood before her desk. Fists clenched, I was unable to meet Miss Hanley's eyes. "Girls," Miss Hanley said gently, "I have no favorites in my classroom. Each kid is unique." Her voice was so kind. "You girls are very different from Kathleen. I'll tell you what I find wonderful about you—your senses of humor, your imaginations and your passion about life." My fists finally unclenched. There was room in Miss Hanley's heart for me! I didn't need to compete with anyone else. It was a far different message—a much happier one. It was a message that I immediately embraced and have never forgotten.
Passage 6 Rigo的声音

The Voice of Rigo
Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother everyone who was working.
Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk. He liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fan. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled, “Hey!” for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.
When Rigo shouted good-bye as he left for school, his mother shook her head. “Rigo! Be quiet!” When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, “Hey! There’s Chris!” He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head. “Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car.” At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.
Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes were up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.
After school, Rigo was waiting for his father. He saw Chris again. “Hey!” he yelled. “Chris! Hey!” The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.

Even the people who sat in the very back." "An actor I could be an actor " said Rigo in surprise. The idea sounded very good to him. "Oh, yes," said the headmaster. "Actors have to use very loud voices when they are on stage. But you know, when they are not on stage, they only use very quiet voices. They save their loud voice for the stage." Just at that moment, Rigo saw his father.

Passage 7 班上特殊的孩子
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.
“Christmas is a season of giving,”I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.
“I don’t need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.
“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.
“Yes.” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”
As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.

Paragraph 1:
On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard’s family. On entering his house, I was surprised to find a barely empty room with only a broken bed and a dirty second hand sofa. Willard told me that his mother died a few years ago and that his father was missed, leaving him to live with a sick grandma. When asked why he had given the two quarters, Willard mumbled, “There are people poorer than me, so I just want to do some help by contributing my milk money.” Hearing his words, I couldn’t help bursting into tears. I thought I should help him break his silence.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, I had a special class for Willard. I shared his story with the whole class and said “Now, on behalf of the people in need, I should say thank you Willard, you are great!”. After a silence, all the students clapped, saying “Willard, you are great! Willard, you are great!” and They walked slowly to him and hugged him tightly. A friend relationship was built and Willard’s silence was broken by a smile on his face.

There was once a very wise teacher. Many students would come from far and wide to hear his words of wisdom. One day, many students gathered in the teaching room. They came in and sat down very quietly, looking to the front with expectation, and were ready to listen to the teacher.
Eventually the teacher came in and sat in the front. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. On one side of the teacher was a large glass jar. On the other side was a pile of dark grey stones. Without saying a word, the teacher began to pick up the stones and place them carefully in the glass jar. When all the stones were in the jar, the teacher asked the students, “Is the jar full ” “Yes, teacher, the jar is full,” said the students.
Without saying a word, the teacher began to drop small round pink stones carefully into the large glass jar so that they fell down between the stones. When all the stones were in the jar, the teacher asked the students, “Is the jar now full ” The students looked at one another and then some of them started nodding and saying, “Yes, teacher, the jar is now full. Yes.”
Without saying a word, the teacher took some fine silver sand and let it flow into the large glass jar where it settled around the pink stones and the dark grey stones. When all the sand was in the jar, the teacher asked the students, “Is the jar now full ”
The students were not so confident this time, but the sand had clearly filled all the space in the jar so a few still nodded and said, “Yes, teacher, the jar is now full. Now it’s full.”
Without saying a word, the teacher took some water and poured it carefully into the large glass jar.
When the water reached the edge, the teacher asked the students, “Is the jar now full ” Most of the students were silent, but two or three ventured (小心地说) to answer, “Yes, teacher, the jar is now full. Now it is.”

Passage 9 作文得了F
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Monty Roberts owns a horse ranch(大牧场)in San Francisco. He is willing to help the young who want to pursue their dreams. We were always curious about the reason behind and one day he told us his story.
When Monty was young,he was the son of an itinerant (四处奔波的) horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, his high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior,he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing the goal of owning a horse ranch some day. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for 4, 000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to the teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class. ”
The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F ”
The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud (马群) fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.”Then the teacher added, “If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”

Paragraph 1:
The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. Having noticed the slight difference on Monty, his father accompanied the little boy without any word until he asked in a low voice, “Dad, have you ever changed your dream ” Noticing the confusion on the young face, his father said without the least hesitation, “Never, it is my treasure.” It suddenly dawned on him that compared with getting F for the paper, he would be more painful if he chose to give up on his dreams. Making up his mind, he took his paper, and headed for the teacher. With determined eyes, Monty said, "I am sorry, teacher. I' d like to keep my dream. ”
Paragraph 2:
Twenty years later, the teacher brought 30 students to camp out on a ranch for a week. Learning Monty was the rancher, she was numb with astonishment. Wearing obvious guilt, she said to him, "Sorry for what I said at that time.” Monty returned her with a smile, “Actually, I should thank you for letting me know what my dream meant to me. ” When the tour was about to end , the teacher called the students together and said in an emotional voice, “Kids, remember, be brave to pursue your dreams regardless of the realistic conditions.” When she finished the words, claps came from behind. It was from Monty. And soon, the students joined him.

After the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday. The teacher told her class to enjoy their extra day off. As the students reached for their backpacks, Kayla, a young girl asked her friend what was Labor Day. The young boy didn't know, either and said that he just knew they got an extra day off from school.
An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. In fact, break was Kayla's favorite part of the school day. After the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the arms of her mom. Learning about Kayla's no school on Monday, Kayla's mom wondered if children needed a break only two weeks after they had started back to school.
Kayla smiled at her mom. She picked up a basketball that lay on the edge of the driveway. She dribbled (运球)it a couple of times and then threw for a goal. A perfect shot!
"Great shot, Kayla!" said her dad.
“Thanks, Dad," said Kayla. " Hopefully my friends can come over and play basketball this weekend!"
"I'll call their parents and see, Kayla," said her mom. "Your homework needs to come first, though. " Kayla said that she wasn't assigned any homework for the holiday weekend. So, she was going to have as much fun as possible.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day, you know, that extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. This was a holiday. As Kayla sat down at the kitchen table for her breakfast, her parents said they thought working hard that day would make her appreciate why Labor Day is observed in the first place. Kayla did some housework, including helping to dry and put away the breakfast dishes, giving her puppy a bath. It was hard work. But it was also a lot of fun. Kayla was covered in just as many soap suds as her puppy and picked up sticks in the yard. Kayla felt proud of how much better the yard looked. The lemonade tasted wonderful after a hard day of work.
Paragraph 2:
The next day Kayla’s teacher asked her students what they did on their extra day off. Twin brothers Matt and Mark shared that they went boating with their family. A young girl Cassie, said that her family had a picnic at the lake. When Kayla talked excitedly about her day, her classmates were surprised. Not because of all the work she had done, but because of how much fun she had when doing it.
