Passage 1 野外遇蛇
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling(种树苗),Pa. Have we planted enough ” Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings.” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. “You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场/草原)“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew. Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand. “There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca. “OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.
“Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. “Come on, let’s go inside.” “No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard telling what’s in there.” “Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks. A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank. It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank. “William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh ” Williams face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout ”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope. “Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When r say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.” Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat(衬裙)from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.

Paragraph 1:
“Get ready to run, William, ”she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake. Rebecca opened the dripping petticoat(wet through with water)as much as she could. Her hands shook as she leaned over the bank. With one swift movement, she dropped the heavy garment on top of the rattlesnake. “NOW!” she shouted to William as the snake began to move under the petticoat. William jumped over the covered snake and ran fast before he stopped and turned around. Rebecca was right behind him.
Paragraph 2:
“Are you OK?” he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded. She was glad they managed to escape. It took them five minutes to catch their breath and calm themselves down. Rebecca checked to make sure that the seedlings were still complete. Then, William gave Rebecca a grateful hug. “Thanks, sister. I’d have done the same for you back there.” Rebecca said with a grin. “You couldn’t have, for you don’t wear petticoats!” Laughing, they raced back to the woods.
Passage 2 洞穴探险
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home in Duncan, on Canada’s Vancouver Island.
It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015. As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full of tums and barely passable tight squeezes.
Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason, Andrew was an expert caver-a former caving guide, actually.
They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you’d miss it if you weren’t looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip-drip-drip from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water up to their ankles, then to their shins.
Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This had a name: Bastard’s Crawl. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of the Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling. not enough for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were in danger!

Paragraph 1:
The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue. The hours passed. Jason and Andrew didn’t dare to move for fear of slipping. They dozed off and then jerked themselves awake. Every once in a while, one of them turned on his headlamp to check the water level. An hour later, the water level went down enough that they could try an escape. Stiff from keeping in one position for 12 hours, they slowly unfolded their bodies. Jason screamed in pain, but he was determined not to let it stop him.
Paragraph 1:
Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward. Still, each time Jason moved a leg, he cried out. Over the next 90 minutes, they made their way toward the entrance, at times in chest-high water. Now, in a passage that was high enough for them to walk upright, Jason saw something flicker in the distance. “Lights! I see lights!” Jason shouted out. For the first time since entering the cave, over 20 hours earlier, Jason’s emotions got the best of him and tears trickled down his cheeks.

Rescue in a Bottle
Curtis Whitson had rafted down the Arroyo Seco, a river in central California, several times before.
This year, Curtis Whitson knew the water-fall was coming. He figured he would get out of his raft into the shallow water, get down the rocks along ropes on either side of the falls, and continue on his way, as he had on a previous trip.
But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls into something fierce. And this year, instead of his friends, Whitson’s companions were his girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez, and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. As the three of them approached the falls late in the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Whitson could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrowing canyon(峡谷) that they were in serious trouble. There was no way they’d be able to get down the rocks as planned.
“The water was just roaring through there with tremendous force,” recalls Whitson, 45.
They had no smart phone service, and they hadn’t seen a single person in the past three days. And Whitson knew that they’d be sharing the ground there with rattlesnakes and mountain lions.
As he was thinking what to do, Whitson hit on a bit of luck---he heard voices coming from the other side of the falls. He yelled, but the sound of the rushing water drowned him out.
“We have to get these people a message,” Whitson thought.
He grabbed a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve “Help” in it. Then he tied a rope to it so the people would know it wasn’t just any stick. He tried throwing it over the falls, but it floated away in the wrong direction.
“We’ve got to do something!” Whitson yelled to his son. “Have we got anything else ”
Then he spotted his water bottle. Whitson grabbed it and carved “Help!”on it. Ramirez also reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack.
Whitson knew it was a slim hope. But he wrote “6-15 19:00 We are stuck here@ the waterfall. Get help please” and pushed the note into the bottle. This time, his throw over the waterfall was perfect.
“All right, that’s all we can do,” Whitson told Hunter.

Paragraph 1:
It took 30 minutes to get back upstream to the beach where they’d had lunch. The night falling, they put up a tent and wolfed down a simplified dinner. Suddenly a low, buzzing sound appearing, Whiston raised his head glanced around and spotted a helicopter in the distance. Blood rushing to his face and heart palpitating fiercely, he leapt to his feet and yelled at the top of his voice. However, the sound of the helicopter drowned him out the helicopter hovered for a while and faded in the suffocating darkness. A tide of exhaustion and despair washed over him. Sensing the desperate gleam in Hunter's eyes, Whiston bent over to give him a tight embrace, comforting that they would be safe.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning the helicopter returned. At the sight of the black dot on the horizon, Whiston made a smoky fire. The heavy smoke curling upward slowly into the sky, he clasped his hands tightly, praying in the depth of his heart that it would work. The black dot grew larger and larger against the orange sky, so was their hope of being rescued. After what seemed like centuries, the helicopter finally came to a halt over them and lowered a rescuer. Bubbling with overwhelming ectasy, Hunter couldn't help bouncing ups and downs. They eventually made it to escape from the nightmare. During their pleasant chat, they learned it was exactly the message in the bottle that saved them.
Passage 4 裂缝脱险
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One Sunday last year, eight of us hiked for a couple of hours through the desert near San Diego to reach Thunder Canyon Cave. We had to abseil(沿绳滑下)through an icy waterfall to get inside, so we put on our wetsuits and lowered ourselves 30 feet down. By 11:00 a.m. we were inside. After we climbed further, we reached a nine-inch crack. Having moved for four hours, I was tired and wet.
The group leader, Luca, was guiding three cavers. One of them, Steve got stuck in the crack. There was 10 minutes of pulling and pushing until Steve was free. He was tired and needed to leave. Luca, assuming I’d been through the crack before, guided Steve through the cave for another 15 minutes to an exit. I was second from last to go through. I didn’t realize that Luca wasn’t there — if I’d known, I wouldn’t have attempted the crack, as I needed an experienced guide.
The challenge is to put your feet first down the length of the crack, and then move your body sideways to swing along, before dropping five feet to the floor of the next space. On my first attempt, I knew I wouldn’t make it through, but the group encouraged me to try again. I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone by having to make the long trip back through the cave, so I backed out and took off my wetsuit. In just my T-shirt, I tried to slide through again but my hips(屁股)were trapped. My feet were hanging on the other side and my left arm supported my body. My hand rested on a wooden board that had been left covering boulders(大圆石) to protect cavers from slipping. Luca returned and the team tried everything to shift me as I mentally focused on escape.
After two hours my arm weakened, so I slid further into the crack, where the gap was only 8.5 inches wide. My body weight was on my left hand, my back and chest touching the cold stone walls. The guy behind me, Jim, tried unsuccessfully to pull me back. Of course, I was blocking his escape, too.

Paragraph 1:
With the risk of the low body temperature, the group supplied me with their own jackets. However, they served no purpose. Frightened and exhausted, I was drifted in and out of a dreamlike state. Jim tried to crack jokes to keep me awake. As time went by, the faith that I could make it alive faded gradually. Noticing it, Luca decided to turn to a rescue team for help.
Paragraph 2:
After eight hours, Luca found the rescue team. On their arrival, the team began to examine the spot. They attempted to jack the board near my hand to drag me out, but in vain. Luca kept on encouraging me while the rescue team used specific tools to drill and even rub part of the rock to free my hips. With their help, I managed to move my feet and climb out of the gap. I was so thrilled that I nearly forgot to thank all the fellows when I was sent to the nearest hospital.

Dawn came slowly. A shaft of sunlight reached into the 4-meter-deep crater(弹坑),making the metal of the bomb shine. The boys were numb and tight, and hungry. They tried not to look at the huge shape of the bomb that appeared over them.
Harry suddenly opened his eyes and seized Jack's arm. "Listen!" he whispered. Jack's eye widened instantly, and both boys strained their ears. They could hear a man talking softly. The voice seemed a long way off. Jack went to shout, but Harry clamped his hand over Jack's mouth. "Don't shout/' he hissed(发出嘘声),"We'll be blown into pieces."
The soft voice came nearer and nearer. Suddenly, an army captain appeared at the top of crater. He was talking to a mouthpiece(话筒)around his neck. He stopped talking when he saw the boys. "What the..." he said, “Who are you " Hairy found his voice, "Jack and Harry Brown." "Is that dog dead " asked the captain. “No: he's sleeping," said Harry.
The captain spoke into the mouthpiece again, “Sergeant(中士)," he said, stopped and took a breath before he went on. “There are two kids and a dog down here." Then the captain crouched down and stared closely at the bomb. “Don't move and don't speak," he said, "or we'll all go up." He began talking quietly to his sergeant.
Jack and Harry were too stiff to move. They held Raf, the dog, tightly and waited. Another man appeared at the top of the crater. "I thought so," he said, "It's them all right "
"It!s Old Tin Hat!" whispered Jack. Old Tin Hat was carrying a ladder. He and the captain lowered the ladder into the loose earth next to the two boys. "Keep still," the captain warned them. As the captain held on at the top. Old Tin Hat started to come down the ladder very slowly, very gently, step by step. At last, he reached the bottom, and with one movement, he lifted Jack on his back. Harry watched as Jack was carried up. It seemed to take an age.

It was 8 a.m. Kathy, a 25 year old nurse, had just finished a 12 hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert(预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I’d be in bed in an hour,” she says.
Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy’s car. She couldn’t see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, “a total whiteout and rows of cars and trucks.”
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma’am,” he answered. “You’re not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they’d seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody’s coming and I can’t take you.”
Near 10 p.m. Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch(浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough(水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn't leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.
He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes still on the table. " Don’t you have enough to do I can take care of myself "I stormed out,not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut(捷径).
Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home cooked meal and a good night's sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal(燕麦)for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.
Ten minutes later, ignoring Joes warning I turned off the main route (道路).I thought it hadn’t trained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks (喇叭声).

Then he threw a thick rope so that I could hang on to it and walk straight toward him. I opened the door, grabbed it and inched out. However, a sudden fall left me in the rushing water. I struggled to my feet, only to find a branch blocking the way right in front of me.
Paragraph 2:

Passage 8 寻找巨石
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A boulder(巨石),as big as a house. That`s how the guidebook described Giant Rock. Dad said it arrived here millions of years ago. I was finally going to see it, in snowshoes, with my two older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I`d been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow.
At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Due to the geographical location, electrical devices were inaccessible here. The map was our only guide. "We start here," Dad said," on the red trail(小路).Then we turn left onto the purple road. That`s where Giant Rock is." "Remember to stick together and don`t wander off, guys," Uncle Don said.
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. We settled into a pattern, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunching(嘎吱嘎吱地踩)through the snow. I saw lots of animal tracks—mostly deer, squirrel, and rabbit prints. As the trail wound down, my cousin Andrew said what I’d been thinking: "Will we ever reach Giant Rock " My cousin Aiden smiled and turned to me, "Luke, do you think your dad invented this idea just to get us away from the TV for a while " I laughed. "You never know."
Finally, we climbed a hill and saw the massive boulder sitting alone in the forest. It really is as big as a house! My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the boulder’s broad shadow, I noticed the sun had sunk lower.
"Let’s head back," Dad said after a few minutes. "There will be several crossroads on the way back. Guys, keep up with the team." Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little behind the group when we approached a crossroads. And I noticed a set of animal tracks I hadn’t recognized before, so I followed them for a closer look.

After a short walk, I came to the crossroads where I could turn left or go straight, but both trails had red markers. I turned to the left which looked familiar. As I strode, it got quieter and quieter. I worried I wandered off. Soon it might be too dark for me to tell what color the markers were. I had no flashlight and no phone. Passage 9 徒步被困
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a land near Watford City, N.D., in the underpopulated western part of the state. In the cold winter, he tried a new spot and forgot to bring his cell phone. He hiked more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
Eyes fixed in the horizon in expectation of another pheasant(野鸡) taking flight, Richard stepped on a thin crust(层) of snow on a canal. It collapsed and dropped him.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Richard was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a walking stick. When he was partly up, he slipped and slid back down, because one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of the canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Richard walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred at about 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the road far away and the sun setting.
Richard focused on crawling(爬) to safety. Even with his gun’s support, hopping(单脚跳) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was stubborn and sure that he must hold on. Temperatures dropped below zero overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

Paragraph 1:
Richard’s dogs had been playing in the field and eventually came up to him. The two dogs surrounded his body to warm him while barking in anxiety. Richard finally struggled to one side of the road with the help of his dogs. Despite his exhaustion and painful leg, he still tried to wave down a driver for fear that he might lose consciousness at any time. He waved wildly and shouted loudly but with no reply from any car.
Paragraph 2:
When the sixth car passed without stopping, his heart sank in despair. However, gleams of daylight remained—Richard saw the seventh car. Gathering all his strength, he waved his hands again. Fortunately, this time the car stopped and the driver rolled down the window to ask him what was wrong. After realizing Richard’s situation, the driver got off, and assisted Richard onto the back seat with Richard’s dogs. Tears welling up in his eyes, Richard extended his heartfelt gratitude in a weak voice. Finally, Richard got rescued and cured. Kindness will be late sometimes, but never miss.
