Passage 1 骑行遇狼
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Pauland Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

Paragraph 1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac jumped off his bicycle and rushed to the door of the car. But before Mac could open the door, the wolf had caught up and jumped to attack. Luckily, the magic spray saved Mac a third time. Seeing the wolf back off, Paul quickly unlocked the door, and the frightened man climbed into the car in no time, shutting the door behind him heavily. Bechy looked out of the back window and saw the wolf standing over Mac’s bicycle as if it were a kill. Soon after, the animal ran off.
Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They were shocked at what they saw and joined Paul. One of Macs friends picked out some raw meat and threw it to the wolf. Satisfied with what he got, the wolf ran into the woods. Mac thanked Paul and Becky, “How grateful I am that you stopped to save me and I owe it to you that I’m still alive.” As Mac got injured, the three men had to give up the rest of their journey and returned home.(170 words)
Passage 2 救了我一命的箭
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a beautiful October evening, a cool gentle breeze was blowing as the moon rose high in the sky, and I had gotten home from work about an hour earlier. As I often did after a long day, I went straight to my backyard and did some work in my flower garden before deciding to light the grill to make dinner for my husband and myself. I had only just walked a few steps when I suddenly felt a horrible blow to the right side of my neck. It felt as though someone had hit me with a baseball bat(棒球棒). I knew that no one was in the yard with me, so no one could have hit me. Totally confused, I reached up and, to my shock and horror, realized that I had been shot- with an arrow.
I grabbed the arrow tightly where it had gone through my neck and ran inside, screaming my husband's name. Ed was in the back of the house talking to our daughter, Keila, on the phone. He dropped the phone and ran to me. Ed grabbed me by the shoulders to stop me from running and told me to lie down on the couch. Then he went to call 911. I lay there and prayed. I didn't know if there was any way that I could survive.
The next hour or so was a crazy, disorderly mix of events. The arrow had come from a young hunter practicing with a compound bow, used for hunting, in his backyard. Luckily, he was using a practice arrow, which is smooth and rounded; a broadhead arrow for hunting would have killed me. He lived across the back street and was shooting to the north. The arrow had bounced and turned back to the south. It went over two, possibly three, fences, through the bushes and an oak tree, between two large hanging baskets, and into my neck as I walked to the grill. A shot from a compound bow can travel up to 200 miles per hour, or 300 feet per second.

Paragraph 1.
Soon, I was sent to the hospital. But again panic started to boil up inside me. At this point, my neck seemed to explode in pain, and even worse, I could hardly breathe. I was close to tears at the thought that I was going to die. How I wished that the horrible nightmare could end soon! Fortunately, after doing a CT scan on my neck, the doctors immediately performed an operation on me. The moment I woke up, one doctor showed me the arrow that might kill me, saying that if it had not been for my husband’s quick action and knowledge of first aid, I would not have survived. Hearing this, I smiled at my husband and then sighed with relief.
Paragraph 2.
The bow hunter paid a visit to me the next day. In front of the hospital bed stood the young hunter, who bowed his head in shame and prayed for forgiveness. I sat up slowly, with no idea what to say. There was a moment of silence before Ed pushed open the door. When he realized who the young man was, an angry look crossed his face, but he managed to contain his anger. “It was an accident, but you mustn’t practise shooting in the street,” my husband said sternly, patting him on the shoulder. Soon the young man’s eyes gleamed with relief and joy, and he promised that he wouldn’t do that again. With a few more words, he bowed to us both, thanked us again and left.
Passage 3 遇到摩托车抢劫
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside. “Mum, can I have this Can I play with this coin ” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.
In 1991, here was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in the neighboring country, Burkina Faso. “It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,” the locals assured us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.
With my passport, money, traveler’s cheques all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How frustrating!
All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face. “Cadeau (‘gift’ in French)! Cadeau!” she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and...everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no ‘cadeau’. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!” The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave me a broad smile.

Paragraph 1:
She reached into the pocket of her dress. “Then I will give you a cadeau,” she announced. Kindly, she placed an old dark brown coin in my hand. In surprise, I looked at the coin, and then at the woman. At that moment, I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless. I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.
Paragraph 1:
There was a slight touch on my hand; looking down, I saw my son looking at me, curious. “Mum, can I have this Can I play with this coin ” he repeated. “You can't play with it, honey,” I touched my son on the head and said slowly, “This one is special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to e and let me tell you a story.”

When I was eleven years old, I had a big accident. I get scared even now when I think about that time. I went skating near my house. There were many people, and I saw some of them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate.
I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn’t learn much. He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down. I envied the other people because they could skate well.
I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I’m still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn’t. He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had happened. I didn’t want to say anything because I was tired and scared. Even now, whenever I think about that time, I feel uncomfortable. I don’t want to go skating again even now.

It was long before I went skating once again, accompanied by one of my friends. This time I was careful and cautious, and my friend took special care of me. I was so fortunate this time that I managed not to fall down. Gradually I learned to skate well and became skillful. I felt very confident and no longer scared.
Paragraph 2:
However, ever since then I haven’t found any time to go skating, not because I do not like skating, but because I am too busy working. I’ve learned a lot from these two skating experiences. We all have moments of desperation. But if we can face them bravely, that’s when we find out how strong we really are. Whatever you do, you must have the patience to do it as well as the skill. Remember: never get too much pride because of victory or lose heart in case of failure.

Alex Dryuba, 31, who runs his own IT firm, recently moved to New York with his family due to work. For nearly three weeks, Alex and his wife, Kelly, were busy cleaning and decorating the new home to make it cozy for the kids. They have three cute children: two-year-old Anne, six-year-old Vicky, and Isabelle, 11. Anne often sits on the windowsill (窗台) of her sixth floor bedroom, where she likes to play with her toys. There is a variety of toys and dolls for the little girl. The window, overlooking Mosholu Avenue in Riverdale, was never open and her mom Kelly thought that Anne was too small to work the latch (插销). However, Alex insisted that when things settled down, they should notify the homeowner that they needed window guards and safety bars to protect Anne and Vicky.
One rainy evening, Anne accompanied by Isabelle was playing with her toys in her bedroom as usual, while their mother busied herself with doing the housework. Anne and Isabelle shared the small bedroom, where Anne’s name is painted in rainbow colors on the wall. After a while, Isabelle wanted to listen to the rain — so she opened the window. Minutes later, Isabelle felt a bit hungry and left the room for a moment to get a slice of pizza from the dining table, leaving Anne alone. Instantly, she heard a thundering sound and the cries of her younger sister coming from five floors below.
Isabelle turned pale and realized something went wrong. She rushed into the bedroom, looked out of the window and saw Anne was on the awning (雨篷) over the entrance to the building. Her heart sank and she felt so scared that she screamed. Hearing her daughter’s screams from a room away, Kelly ran into Anne’s room and was too shocked to speak. “It’s all my fault, Mom. I shouldn’t have opened that window,” Isabelle cried hard. It felt like a nightmare but Kelly managed to keep calm. “We need to go downstairs to get Anne down from the awning, the sooner the better!”

An Unusual Day
“Usual boring day!” This would be the answer from Roman if somebody asks him how his day was. These days he found everything boring and nothing excited him.
When he went into the living room,it was dark. His young brother was playing with his friend. They were rolling on the floor. He was looking for a TV remote, but couldn’t find it. He looked at his brother who was still lying on the floor playing.
He asked him,“Where is the remote?”
“Under the sofa,” his brother yelled.
He tried to look through, but it was dark as well as narrow. He put his hand under the sofa,he touched something, and grabbed it and took his hand out. OMG!It was a snake in his hand!
After seeing that his brother started to yell,“Snake, snake!”His friend also accompanied him on shouting. Mom came as soon as she heard their shouting. She was too horrified to see a snake. She was so scared that she even couldn’t speak a word.
She was trying to say something, but was only able to make a sigh. Two kids were trying to hide into each other’s back. “What an old trick!” Roman thought and grabbed the snake and threw it over the kids.
As the snake landed on the floor near the kids, they yelled even more. Now the snake started moving from left side to the right. Only then did Roman realize that the snake was real, not a fake one. He threw the snake over the kids because he thought it was a fake snake and the kids were playing some tricks.
This time mom almost got heart attack. Then he realized what a big mistake he had committed. Now he was scared too. The kids were about to faint with fear, while mom was paralyzed with horror. The snake was only 10 meters away from the kids and it was gazing at them. They even couldn’t call a rescue team. There was not much time to think.

They found the exhibits for many different kinds of animals and learned a lot about their natural habitats. They saw the elephants playing and they saw giraffes eating. They saw the polar bears sleeping and the monkeys leaping. Abigail asked Derrick:
“Derrick, what is your favorite animal?”
“I think I like chimpanzees best. They have a lot of energy, just like me! What animal do you like, Abigail?”
“I love polar bears! I think their lifestyle in the Arctic is very interesting.”
A few hours later, Abigail and Derrick started to feel hungry. They made their way back to the zoo entrance to eat lunch at the Rainforest Cafe. The Rainforest Cafe is both Abigail and Derrick’s favorite restaurant because there is an aquarium inside. The restaurant is also famous for its chocolate cake, which Abigail ordered for dessert after they had finished their lunch.
As Abigail was finishing her cake, Derrick excused himself to go to the restroom. About ten minutes later, a sudden alarm began to go off and a voice came over the loudspeaker.
“Attention! Someone has opened the chimpanzee exhibit! Some chimpanzees have escaped!”
People were screaming and starting to run. Abigail looked for Derrick, but he was nowhere to be found.

Believe in Miracles
My friend Annette and I had decided to go to a writer’s conference over Valentine’s Day weekend in Livermore, California. We were taking a mini vacation together and couldn’t have been more excited. We wanted to get there the day before the conference and settle into our hotel room.
The weather forecast was predicting high winds and rain, so we decided to take an early morning train and then connect with a city bus to our hotel. We arrived early enough to enjoy breakfast in the hotel. We even had the good fortune to be able to get our room. All was going well. We were off to a perfect start.
Once in our room, the terrible storm hit the earth! The wind and rain made staying in the only sensible option. As lunchtime approached, we decided to try a phone app that would bring almost any restaurant’s food to us. We decided on hamburgers from a well-known chain.
The food-delivery app promised a 45-minute wait time. Forty-five minutes came and went, then an hour, and then an hour and a half. After two hours, I called the restaurant.
They explained that our hamburgers were under a heat lamp the entire time, just waiting for the driver. We canceled the order and decided to go out in an Uber car to continue our quest for hamburgers.
The front-desk manager suggested a restaurant that had great hamburgers. So we took the Uber car and set off. But when we arrived at the restaurant, we found it was closed due to the bad weather. And our car had already left. We stood outside the building on that miserably cold and wet day, trying to decide what to do next. Of course, the solution was easy: Just order another Uber car.
I began digging in my purse for my phone, but it wasn’t there!

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years, I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said, “There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this yearns tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back.” My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself, "Am I going to be out of shape Should I even play this year I probably won't have a successful season. "
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.

After I got the "all clear'' from my orthopedist I was going to get to work. Practices were going to start in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective. I had the most successful season of my career. I made it to the finals. Although I truly wanted to win, I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most rewarding season of my career. I felt so accomplished at the end of the season. Hard work always pays off.
