Passage 1 火灾救人
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate. That's when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.
“The baby's in there!” the woman cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-oldTiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter.
Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout (布局)to h is, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟声) emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

Paragraph 1:
Finally, he touched something-a shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn't breathing. He hugged her into his arms and stood. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch. He started CPR-the first time he’d ever done so. Soon she opened her eyes and took a breath on her own. Surrel's throat closed off.
Paragraph 2:
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. He suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. The fire worsened Surrell’s pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It’s a small price to pay,” he says. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn't give it a second thought.”
Passage 2 狗狗森林火中救人
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox(火绒箱) and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm. “Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash(皮带) and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…
Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.
Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up aslope(斜坡). He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.

Paragraph 1:
“Where’ve you been ” Steve cried. Brady stopped directly in front of him and started pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. When Steve still didn’t get it, Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and pulled harder. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered what his uncle had said about Brady saving his life, but that had been a long time ago. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve decided.
Paragraph 2:
Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped to get his escape route. Often he changed direction. How long they’d walked Steve had no idea. He just held onto Brady’s leash with one hand and kept putting one foot in front of the other. He was almost numb when he heard the wonderful sound of rushing water. The river! With a yell the boys ran unsteadily forward until they jumped in cool, running water. “Brady, you did it!”

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

Paragraph 1:
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Paragraph 21:
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane’s mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom’s joy was immense.

It was 11 p.m. The storm had moved directly over his two-story wood home in the rural town. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping. Lubeck quickly walked down the stairs barefoot to investigate; he opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out.
Lubeck fled back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom, but the phone didn’t work. And when he tried to go down the exterior stairway, he was stopped by a wall of flames. “I started panicking,” he says.
Lubeck realized he was trapped. His daughter and young granddaughters, who lived with him, were away for the night. His house was three miles off the main road and so well hidden by pines (松树) that Lubeck knew calling for help would be fruitless.
“I could hear the fire moving through the house—boom, crash, bang, boom—and you know it’s coming for you,” Lubeck says. “The thing that got me was to die alone. Not to say goodbye to someone.”
Up a hill about a third of a mile away lived Lubeck’s closest neighbors, Jeremie Wentworth and his wife. Wentworth had been lying down listening to crickets chirping (蟋蟀鸣叫) when it occurred to him that the sound was more like a smoke detector. He jumped out of bed, grabbed a phone and a flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise. That’s when he saw the roiling mountain of black smoke.
He dialed (拨号) 911, then called out, “Is anyone there ” as he approached the house. Wentworth knew that Lubeck lived in the house.
Then he heard, “Help me! I’m trapped!” coming from the balcony off Lubeck’s bedroom. On the phone, the 911 official warned Wentworth not to enter the house. “But there was no way I was going to listen to Don scream and die in that fire,” he says. “I told him, ‘I’m sorry, but I’m going in.’”
Inside the house, windows broke into pieces all around him. “I was yelling, ‘Don, where are you ’ Then I had to run outside to catch my breath.”

Paragraph 1:
The wind parted the black smoke just enough for him to glimpse Lubeck on the second-floor balcony. But there was no way to get to him. “I shined the flashlight into the woods next to an old shed and noticed a ladder,” says Wentworth. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Lubeck down just as the second floor of the house collapsed. As soon as the rescuers arrived, they sent Lubeck to the nearest hospital because he had difficulty breathing. They put out the fire, but the two-story house had been burned down. Upon hearing the news, the old’s daughter hurried to the hospital.
Paragraph 2:
Lubeck choked up when he told his daughter the story. “I was alone,” he said. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Jeremie.” Within the year, Lubeck and his family built a new two-story wood house at the site of the fire. Wentworth and Lubeck don’t run into each other regularly, but Lubeck now knows that if he ever needs help, Wentworth will be there.
Passage 5 野外露营着火
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped (包裹) aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

Paragraph 1:
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sitting in the cold air and wondering how to get out of the forest.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend and equal, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.
Passage 6 老房子
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A brother and sister made their usual hurried pre-Christmas visit to the little farm, where lived their elderly parents with their small herd(群) of horses.
The young folks had fond memories of their childhood here. Everything was perfect except the aging old horse, ‘The Old One'.
Doubtfully, the young folks asked the old couple, “ Why do you not at least get rid of ‘The Old One’ ”
The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, and replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”
Worried and confused, the young folks wished the old couple a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.
The old couple shook their heads in sorrow. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How was it that these young folks did not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts
Because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the first spark fall in the bam(马厩). None but the ‘The Old One'.
In a matter of minutes, the bam was full of hungry flames. With a cry of horror and despair, the old couple sank sobbing to the ground, helpless. The bam was in ruins.
The old man turned to his wife, forcing a smile, “We have lost much. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair and pray for our beloved ‘The Old One'”.
The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they got to the peak of the hill, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and puzzled, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the pine tree was their Christmas gift-The Old One’ lay close to the trunk of the tree, with the entire herd.

Paragraph 1:
As it turned out, the moment ‘The Old One' saw the smoke, she pushed the door and led the horses through it. The hungry flames were around them, licking their lips and hopping like rabbits. So frightened were the horses that they dashed about aimlessly. After what seemed to be ages, ‘The Old One' managed to calm them down. Slowly and with great dignity, she led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. As usual, she gathered the herd of horses under the old pine tree, where they often took a rest after eating grass.
Paragraph 2:
Spotting the old couple, ‘The Old One' seemed to be happy. She did not disappoint those she loved. Her body was weak, tired from the climb, but the gulden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift to the old couple. Seeing the unexpected “Christmas gift”, the old couple couldn't help shouting their praise and joy...and again the peace of love filled their hearts. Tears flowing down, the old couple gently stroked ‘The Old One', murmuring, “Because of love. Only Because of love.”

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom.
One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.
Neighbours called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.
Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night.
An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.
A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing (教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them.
Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”
Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.
“Does anyone else want to speak ” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.

When he got to the front of the hall, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. His hands and arms were terribly scarred. Then she looked up and smiled, stating happily she would live with him.

When asked about her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. She said in a low but determined voice, “I really desire to get a good education that will give me chances to live my dreams. Passage 8 和父母野营
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
On one sunny afternoon in August, Riley and I were over the moon when Mom and Dad said we were renting an RV for family camping trip because our family hadn’t been out for several months. Mom researched nearby areas for a long time and finally zeroed in on a campground up in the mountains, about five hours away from our home. We packed everything we’d need—sleeping bags, tents, chairs, sunscreen, and about a million other things—into the RV and headed off to the mountains.
On the way, Riley and I talked happily about what we would do in the evening: singing, dancing around the fire, enjoying the moon, and a million other things. Arriving at the campsite, Dad drove past a small office building but then hit the brakes when he saw someone run out and wave for him to stop. Apparently, we needed to stop to register for our campsite.
After registering at the front office, Dad drove the RV down to the camping area and parked. “Riley, Sean, you need to help set up the site,” Mom said. We all pitched in, dragging out our camp chairs, and other supplies, and soon we were ready to kick back and relax. Sitting at the picnic table, I popped opened a bag of chips.
“Let’s get some music going,” Dad said. “Hey, where’s the electrical hook-up ” “Oh, boy,” Mom said, “We are in the tents-only area, where there’s no electricity. We’re not even supposed to be in this area with an RV.” We had no choice but to choose another camping site.
Twenty minutes later, we’d broken camp and packed everything back in the RV. Mom drove around the campgrounds until we spotted other RVs and then pulled to a stop. After we unpacked everything, I sniffed and was immediately slammed with the most horrible stench I’d ever smelled in my entire life. “We’re right near the dumpsters!” I groaned. What to do next Again we had no choice but to find a new one.

Paragraph 1:
We quickly shoved everything back into the RV, and drove to a different spot. After making sure there were no bad smells, or any other problems, we unpacked all the things—and set up our campsite—again. When Mom tried to plug in the extension cord, she couldn’t find the electrical hook-up, and that’s because it was on the other side of the RV! We’d parked in the wrong direction. Dad climbed in the RV and started to turn it around. Pop! There must have been a sharp rock because now the RV had a flat tire. “What do we do now—call for help ” Mom asked.
Paragraph 2:
Dad finally laughed and said, “It’s time to start enjoying this camping trip. Let’s get a fire started.” Facing the dilemma, we had to follow Dad’s advice. Quickly, a fire was started, and we sat by it, relaxing ourselves from a day’s exhaustion. In the quiet mountain, under the starry sky, Dad and Mom began to sing, adding pleasant music to the unforgettable night. Though we had several setbacks, it was the best family camping trip I’ve ever had.
