Passage 1 拿古董枪偷窃古董被抓
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. As a result, the poor fellow couldn’t pay his bills and he couldn’t even find anybody to lend him any.
Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique (古董) furniture and vases. Carl thought, “If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for a lot of money.”
Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o’clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.
One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem.”
There was an old gun in the cellar(地下室). It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”
He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw(锯).
The next morning, he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o’clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.
He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame. Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell on the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the piece of glass to the window.
Harry rented a room in Mrs. Allen’s house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it with a newspaper and put the newspaper under his bed.
In the morning, Janey Allen was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Rivesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at the photo of the blue vase.
At that time Harry wasn’t in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took them from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.
Janey opened Harry’s door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for recycling. She found a newspaper under Harry’s bed. She put the old newspapers into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house and saw the truck. “Wait!” she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.
Harry came back to the house. He saw the recycling truck, and he was Janey.
“The newspaper——!Oh, no!” Harry said.

Jack, a clerk at the local bank, was wandering alone on the street. It was a cold, silent winter night. His mind was on his wife Linda, who had been in a car accident two months ago and was now lying in a hospital bed, waiting for more money for her operation. Jack had sold everything he had, and he had tried his best to borrow money from all the people and bank she could. But the real world is cruel. A large amount of money was still needed. To Jack, it would mean a great deal of suffering to see his wife die without any help. “I have only one option left,” Jack said to himself. Then he went to the bank, his workplace, again. For several days, he observed the bank and planned a theft.
The next day, he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal: he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm, the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However, at that moment, Jack was in the bathroom, and the guards didn't notice him, of course. When the noises coming from the street were replaced by silence and everything turned dark, Jack came out from the bathroom. He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase. He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools, he then easily opened the doors of the safes. The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later, Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.

Passage 5 抢劫老奶奶
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I received an urgent call from my aunt. “Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news.” It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack (劫车)her.
Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't " a granny". This was Nancy Johnson — the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan (小型货车)she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.
The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, " Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge." If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.
She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn (喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

Paragraph 1:
After a well-placed kick, the man was done, and attempted to release her and run. But Granny wouldn’t stand for that. It was now her turn to grab onto him, her hands made strong from hours and hours of farm work. That poor fool didn’t have a chance. She shouted for help to bystanders, and they rushed to her aid. With Granny leading the charge, a group of strangers came together and pinned the man to the sidewalk, holding him there until the police came. A silver-haired woman had just made a citizen’s arrest.
Paragraph 2:
Later, we asked “Granny, don’t you realize you could have got yourself hilled ” Granny’s answer was surprisingly amusing and simple: “I wasn’t scared of that little idiot. I’d had my brand-new van for less than two days and a pack of good sandwiches for my office. And there was no way he was going to get either of those!” But we all learned an important lesson from her that day- the same lesson that had been building through the years. She encouraged us to push boundaries and expectations. But even more so, she taught us fearlessness.

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching television. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, "No." He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help ” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened ” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.
