Passage 1 没有翅膀大天使
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Many years earlier, my mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it. She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home. If I wanted to go to college, it was up to me to find out how to get there.
I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family, my mom’s income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board. I accepted a job as part of a work-study program. While not attractive, it was one I could do. I washed dishes in the school cafeteria.
Just when I thought I was going to drop out of my college career, an angel appeared. Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings. “I heard that you need some help,” he said. “What do you mean ” I asked, trying to figure out which area of my life he meant. "Financially, to stay in school.” “Well, I make it okay. I just have trouble working all these hours and finding time to study.” “Well, I think I have a way to help you out.”
He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month, twice the money I was making washing dishes. Now I would have time to study. I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.
My first discovery was his grandmother’s great love of music. She spent hours playing her old, off-key piano. One day, she told me I didn’t have enough fun in my life and took it upon herself to teach me the art. Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue. Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking, they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers.

Paragraph 1:
When Christmas break came, Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her. I hadn’t been home since Labor Day, and my mother was anxious to see me. I agreed to come home, but for two weeks instead of four, so I could return to Grandma and Grandpa. I said my good-byes, arranged for their temporary care and return home. As I was loading my car to go back to school, the phone rang. “Grandma died last night, I’m sorry.” I hung up the phone feeling like my world had ended. I had lost my friend, and that was far worse than knowing I would have to return to washing dishes. I went back at the end of four weeks, asking to begin the work-study program again. The financial aid advisor looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I explained my position, then he smiled and slid me an envelope. “This is for you,” he said.
Paragraph 2:
The envelope was from grandma. She had known how sick she was. In the envelope was enough money to pay for the rest of my college year and a request that I take piano lessons in her memory. Moved to tears, I determined to learn piano lesions by heart and my memory of grandma motivated me to practice day and night. I don’t think the piano piece was even played with more feeling than it was my second year in college. Now, years later, when I walk by a piano, I smile and think of Grandma. She is playing the piano smilingly in heaven, I am sure.
Passage 2 丛林换轮胎
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Ouch!” I howled in pain as I dropped the hammer onto my foot. I felt foolish.
It was pouring with rain, and, lame for a moment, I hopped around to the driver's side.
“No luck ” said George. We had a flat tyre (轮胎) and I was trying to change the wheel. But it was stuck firm.
We had driven ten hours along the road through the jungle without seeing another soul. In the distance was an ox working in the field.
“So what do we do now How can we find a garage ” asked George, as I got back into the car.
About fifteen minutes later, the rain stopped. Out of the jungle came an old woman. She walked towards us carrying something long and thin.
“Uh, oh, here comes danger!” said George, “She’s got a spear.”
She was wearing traditional garments, with short sleeves, a colorful necklace and other jewelry. As she got closer, we saw the spear was just a wooden pole. I got out.
“Hello!” I said, in English. “Can you help us ” I pointed to the wheel.
She stared at it, and then made a gesture to follow her back to the jungle. George and I looked at each other, and then set off after her.
Soon we came to a tent under some trees. It had a firm framework of wooden poles, like the one the woman was carrying, covered with heavy cloth, and fastened with rope made of some kind of loose plant fiber. All round were corn plants. It was harvest time for the grain, and a spade, a fork and other tools were lying on the ground. Nearby were some chicks and a rooster, and a pig tied to a post.
The woman folded back a cloth and invited us in. My eyes had to adjust to the darkness inside. The tent was furnished with a few mats on the floor, and a low table with a teapot. She picked up a photo and showed it to us. Was it her husband The man in the photo was bare to the waist. He looked much too young. She was probably a widow (寡妇). Maybe her son or her nephew
Our hostess poured some tea, and watched smiling as we drank.
“Say something,” said George.

Paragraph 1:
I was wondering what to say when I heard the sound of footsteps out of the tent. We both looked up. It was exactly the young man in the photo but looked much stronger. The woman said something to him, looking at us smiling. “Need some Mg ” he asked. It’s amazing he was speaking very good English! George and I looked at each other, eyes lit up. “Yes, and we were wondering if you could have one of our tyres changed.” “Follow me!” he said, sounding like sort of an order.
Paragraph 2:
We got up and together walked back to the car. The man grabbed the wheel with one hand and a spanner with the other. With an outburst of shout, the tyre was loosened up. “You just need a bit of effort. Haha!” George and I stood there dumfounded watching him finishing the whole job, gratitude and admiration rushing in my heart. The knot that had been tired up by the pain in my foot, the cold soaking rain and the stubborn flat tyre was loosened up too, in the warm tea from the woman, the heroic shout of the man, the mountain view in the distance and the joy of being able to set off again.
Passage 3 小提琴
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Contact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, so why did I notice that one I laid the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, during the Great Depression when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When my older twin sisters began showing an interest in music, Harriet Anne learned to play Grandma’s piano, while Suzanne turned to Daddy’s violin. Simple tunes became lovely melodies. My baby brother danced; Daddy hummed and Mother whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew long enough, I tried to play Suzanne’s violin. Oh, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
One evening as the twins played in the school orchestra. I closed my eyes tight to capture the picture firmly in my mind. Someday, I’ll sit up there, I vowed silently.
It was not a good year. At harvest the crops didn’t bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own ”
“Can’t you use Suzanne’s ”
“I’d like to be in the orchestra too, and we can’t both use the same violin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family prayers, “… and Lord, Mary Lou wants her own violin.”
One evening we all sat round the table. The twins and I studied. Mother sewed and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he asked me, “Mary Lou, do you want to go with me to visit Mr Finkle ”
He drove us to Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall man opened the door. He and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
“Mary Lou, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your Daddy has arranged a surprise for you!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play. The melody surged and spoke like waterfalls. Oh, to play like him, I thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to Daddy. “I found it in a pawnshop(当铺)for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary Lou should be able to make a beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.

Paragraph 1:
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine! “It’s beautiful.” I said, barely breathing. I knew Daddy’s prayer, and mine, had been answered. Back home, I practiced daily, feeling no tiredness. When I was ready to join the school orchestra, I trembled with excitement. Daddy and Mother smiled proudly in the audience at their little girl who held her cherished violin for the whole world to admire. The years seemed to run more swiftly then. I packed my violin in its case and stepped into the grown-up world. Nurse’s training, marriage, working, bringing up four daughters filled my years. Yet none of my children cared about the violin.
Paragraph 2:
I forced my thoughts to the present and read again the advertisement. Laying the paper aside, I went to find my violin. And I dialed the number. Later that afternoon, an old car stopped in my driveway. A man in his thirties with a young girl knocked on the door. “I’ve been praying someone would answer my advertisement. My daughter wants a violin so badly.” He said, “How much are you asking ” “Seven dollars,” I said. I handed the case to the girl. She opened the case and touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon sun. Then she threw her arms round her smiling father.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

Passage 5 给陌生小女孩送礼物
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny. The staff had located Dayami. who indeed lived in Nogales and would be willing to arrange a get-together at the radio station. Heiss and his wife rushed to buy everything on Dayami’s list. Then they drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They finally met the very excited girl.
Paragraph 2:
Dayami’s eyes were wide open with wonder. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, this really did work!’ It was a beautiful experience,” Heiss said. “Quite healing for us.” Heiss, 61, has lived in Bisbee, Arizona for more than three decades. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child. They have no grandchildren. Now they split their time between Nogales and Bisbee. “Being around children at Christmastime has been absent in our lives,” Heiss said. “It’s been kind of a gaping hole in our Christmas experience.” He has since reflected on what a mirade it was that he spotted the balloon at all, let alone that he was able to locate Dayami and her family.
Passage 6 小小的善举
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
We all could say that we have bad days to endure as we go through life, but what does it take to have a really good day
Some would suggest that a day would be great if everything they did turned out well, or they got exactly what they needed. On the other hand, have you ever thought that what you may give someone else may be the best day you ever had especially when you put someone else’s well-being or happiness first on your list
There is special warmth available to you and that warmth can come from a helping hand, doing a small favor for a total stranger, or even a smile.
I recall a day recently when I had to go to the hospital for an appointment because I wasn’t feeling well and my doctor sent me to a specialist to try and determine the cause.
As I drove to the hospital, I admittedly was feeling gloomy and certainly wasn’t on top of my game. As I approached the hospital, I began my search for a parking spot, a spot that was hard to come with everyone else trying to do the same thing. I finally found a spot not too far from the entrance to the hospital.
As I got out and brought my change out of my pocket, I noticed a man looking somewhat upset standing in front of a parking meter two cars away. He seemed to be searching his pockets for what I supposed was change for the meter.
Although, I really didn’t feel that great, I thought that I should at least go over to him and find out if I could help him. As I approached him, he turned to look at me, feeling at a loss not knowing what to do. I asked him if he had a problem I could help with, and he said, without hesitation, that he had no change at all because he left it in his house only thinking about visiting his sick wife.

Paragraph 1:
Faced with such a situation, I reached into my pocket. Soon I pulled out some change and gave it to him, without hesitation and saving a single word, I went on towards completing my own business. As you know, I had an appointment, for a response, I turned on my heel and said to him as I was walking away, "Have a good day."
Paragraph 2:
The funny thing was that I felt a lot brighter, and a small smile came to my face. And I seemed to walk just a little quicker. I was walking away when he called out "thank you so much" far behind. Honestly, I didn’t even expect him to say anything. It was satisfying enough to know that I had made a simple gesture to help someone else who needed a little hand, a little help. However, it brought to my face a smile. It doesn't take much to lend those in need a helping hand; a big payoff is what you get in return. More importantly, with such warmth catching on, our society will become more and more harmonious and comfortable.
Passage 7 丢失皮手套

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. “Where are they ” Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women’s and the other not black.

Then he dragged his legs towards the exit.

After examining them carefully, he was wild with joy, expressing sincere gratitude and saying to himself that a good action was never lost.

The really great stories are not the stories written by the world’s greatest writers, but the ones that really happen to real people and are absolutely true. The following story is one of such great stories.
In 1917, American soldiers poured into Europe to put an end to World War I. A troop of its army was sent to be stationed in a German town Seldes.
Alex Lurye, a lone Jewish soldier in the troop, decided to see what the Jewish population there was like one night. He entered the local Jewish church. Though in uniform, he was greeted by a kind Jew Herr Rosenau. After the services Rosenau invited the serviceman to his house, where the family gave him a delicious warm home-cooked meal, and also the feeling that he was not alone, certainly not an enemy, even in such a far and distant land.
The warm caring Jewish home did not leave the soldier. When Alex finally returned to Duluth, Minnesota, his hometown, he wrote a letter to the German Jew who had touched his life with such kindness. For some unknown reason, although Herr Rosenau received the letter, it was never answered, just kept in a desk drawer.
In 1938, Adolf Hitler’s anti-Jewish policy made Rosenau’s family worried about their future. They wanted to flee from Germany, but he had no relatives abroad to help them. Suddenly Rosenau thought of the letter. He went to pull the desk drawer and opened the letter that had rested there for 21 years. It was Alex’s thank-you letter. Although Herr didn’t know if the former American soldier still remembered him, he decided to try his luck. However, there was no return address on the envelope. He only found the name of the writer, and the city and the state. Even so, he could do nothing but have a try. He hoped to get out before the mad man, Hitler, began to do worse things to the Jews.
So he wrote a letter addressed only as follows: Alex Lurye Duluth, Minnesota To his family’s great excitement, the letter did work and they soon got a reply from Alex Luyre!

Duluth was merely a town of over a hundred thousand people. Alex had then become a wealthy businessman, who was well known in the town. The postmaster delivered the letter to him easily, when Alex received this 21 years after he wrote the thank-you one. He quickly sent a return letter acknowledging his receipt of their letter and promising to help bring the Jewish family to America. The entire family was successfully brought over to the town of Duluth that year. Alex settled them down and helped them be employed.
Paragraph 2:
The kindness that Herr Rosenau had given to a stranger many years earlier had come full circle. Because of their kindness, Herr Rosenau and his family were spared from the horrible fate of their fellow German Jews. The kindness that they had so warmly given to others without desiring the payment in return had come back to them with profits. The entire family was saved by Alex Luyre, or rather in a sense, they were saved by themselves.

I would like to share an act of kindness, which I practice regularly and which gives me great joy. I always carry at least $ 10 in my car and also in my pocket. I save it for the first person who asks if I can “spare some change. Smiling at the person, I always respond very cheerfully with a comment like, “Yes, I would love to.” or “It would be my pleasure. “And I give them the money. Then I replace it with my next $ 10 for the next person. I never spend this money myself. I think that it is the possession of the next person who asks for it. Ten dollars is a small amount, yet it means a lot to the person who expects it, especially when delivered with joy and respect to them.
I also have taken to carrying things in my car, such as hats, socks, gloves and umbrellas, just in case someone needs them. Recently I put together some care packages for the homeless. It occurred to me that things like band-aids, toothpaste, aspirin, combs, as well as food and bottled water would be of use. I imagined that they would need things that are non - breakable, so I chose plastic or paper containers. The folks who received them were delighted. But I feel it’s not just that I give them things that matters. I always remember it is they who bless me with an opportunity to be kind. What a joy!

The idea of helping others this way came to me when I got similar help from a woman. One day, I was shopping at a grocery store and when I went to pay for my groceries, I discovered my wallet was gone. You can imagine how embarrassed I was then. Luckily, a woman, overhearing my problem, offered to pay my bill. I was so thankful and asked for her phone number so that I could pay back the money. “Don’t pay it back. Pay it forward,” the woman replied with a smile. That was when I decided to do something nice for whoever needs help.
Paragraph 2:
Interestingly enough, I often get something in return from the person I help. The other day, a young lady to whom I gave some change, asked if I could use a spare pair of gloves she had. So, I accepted them for the next person who needs them. I was touched to see she wanted to give me something. In fact, she gave me more. She gave me a feeling of happiness that only those who are happy to show kindness to others can understand.

“Right. Got your medical bag ”
“Yes.”
Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem(耶路撒冷). The blue sky above the mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.
As we sped along, we came to our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderful view of Jerusalem suddenly appeared above the roadway. We had a good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.
After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we go to see his patient.
Avraham had to visit an elderly woman in Jerusalem because her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there were very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address.
But the note was nowhere to be found.
“I don't believe it! I must have left the address at home.”
“Do you remember any part of the address ” I asked.
“I remember that there was a number 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date.”
“Do you know the street name ”
“No. Just that it's in this neighborhood.”
I had heard the family name mentioned the day before and remembered it sounded like a European name. “Let's try looking at buildings and see if the mailboxes can give us some help,” I offered.

We scanned the listings for the number 17 and two more nearby buildings. “Well, since we are already in the city, let's try one last building,” Avraham suggested, as he whispered a prayer for God's help in finding the right house with the uncertain address. We tiredly approached the entrance to an apartment house down another street and noticed all of the European names. Taking this as a good sign, we entered the entrance where we learned an elderly couple lived next door.
Paragraph 2:
We quickly went upstairs and knocked on a door. An old man answered the door. Avraham carried the medical bag and explained, “I came here to see my patient.” The delighted man warmly welcomed us, telling us his wife suffered from a variety of illnesses. Avraham soon conducted a thorough examination and suggested appropriate following-up care. They thanked us with gratitude. Before we left, their daughter came, asking, “How did you know to come to see my mum I didn't call!”
