Waking with Misty
In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of their desire.
But why, they pleaded(恳求 ). “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” But we'll do it. " Really You're going to walk the dog Feed the dog Bathe the dog ” Yes, yes, and yes.
“I don't believe you. " “We will.” We promise
They didn’t. From day two, neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one.
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld. She' d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand. In no time, she became fifth appendage (附加物), snoring on my home-office couch as I worked, cradling against my feet as I read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched television.
Even so, part of me continued to dislike walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. “Not fair,” I'd loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home
Then one day --January 1, 2007, to be exact ---my husband’s doctor uttered an unthinkable word: leukemia(白血病. With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospitaldoing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. During those six months of hospitalizations, Becky, 12 at the time, adjusted to other adults being in the house when she returned from school.
My work colleagues adjusted to my taking off at a moment’s notice for medical emergencies. Every part of my life changed: no part of my old routine remained.
Save one: Misty still needed waking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces, I declined because I knew they had their own households to deal with.

Paragraph 1:
As the months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. Before I knew it, the mind meld between us had grown strong enough to keep me spellbound, always. In those days, with most of my time taken up attending to Joein hospital, little time was spared to take care of Becky, let alone Misty. But whenever I did manage to walk her for a while, she would be the happiest girl in the world, one second jumping about me like mad, and another dashing ahead before rushing back like lightning. It was at this moment that I would feel a little relaxed.
Paragraph 2:
After Joe died in 2009, Misty slept on his pillow. At night, when I lay wide awake or woke up with a start, as was often the case, Misty was always there keeping me company. For a time, I felt the world was at an end, all of my hopes gone, which was sensed by Misty of course. And every day, my home witnessed her playing a new trick or making faces to please me. When catching sight of a stranger, she ceased to bark loudly as she used to, as if not to disturb me. Gradually, my life was changed with the deep sorrow transformed into attachment to and gratitude for such a nice companion. The family of three—Becky, Misty and I, was lively again with hope.
Passage 2 偶遇熊
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Last August I was on a hiking trip with my friends, Andrew and Ben, in the high peaks region of New York’s Adirondack Park. The sun was bright. We brought four big food cans. We filled them with food, and then filled our bags with more. For those of you that don’t know what a food can is, that’s a lot of food for three days. We had a pleasant day of hiking and at seven we arrived at our campsite at a small stream away from the main path.
Andrew started cooking the pasta while Ben and I set up our camp. After dinner we gave the leftover pasta to Ben to finish and started to clean up the mess at 9 p.m. It was dark. Brushing my teeth, I heard a crackle in the woods but saw nothing. Thinking it was a small animal, I continued brushing. I heard another snap-crackle-pop behind our tent, and from my light I saw two large bright eyes looking back at me.
The eyes were too far apart to belong to any sort of small animal so I knew we were dealing with a bear. I did what most people do in these situations: panic and shout. Andrew joined me in yelling and even Ben managed some muffled grunts from behind a mouthful of pasta. It looked as if the bear was walking away and the shouting had worked, but it was just rounding a tree to eat at the open food can.

Paragraph 1:
Defeated, we watched in silence as the bear ate our food. It ate one block of cheese, three freeze dry packs, 12 packs of oatmeal, and six of our 24 bagels from the food can. Hearing the shouts, our neighbors across the stream offered some bear spray. We bushwhacked around the bear to the main trail, and brought them back to our camp. The kind neighbors followed the dark path around the camp until they came unexpectedly upon the bear’s butt. Frightened, they sprayed at the bear multiple times, and it soon ran away.
Paragraph 2:
We returned to our campsite, relieved to retrieve what remained of our food. Though the bear was gone from our camp, it was replaced with a healthy serving of pepper. What they don’t tell you about pepper spray is that it lingers. While choking on the air and with burning eyes, we cleaned up the mess as fast as possible. Not much happening throughout the night, we fell asleep, our dreams filled with bears wielding pepper shakers.
Passage 3 新的宠物
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Jamie ran out of his house along the street toward his building. The abandoned buildings there were his playground.
Jamie moved a wooden board from the door to one of the buildings. He crawled inside. There was broken glass on the floor. Jamie went down the stairs to the basement. It was even darker down there, and damp. The buildings were near the river. Sometimes water flooded in. He'd never found anything alive until he found Sharon.
“Sharon, I’m here!” Jamie called. “I brought a candle, too. I'm going to light it so I can see you better."
Jamie took out a match and lit the candle. A soft circle of light lit up the darkness.
“Come over here where I can see you,” Jamie said. “Please don’t be afraid. I’m not afraid. I told you that.”
The creature slithered (滑行) into the light. It was about Jamie’s size. Its head and body were covered with dark green scales(鱗片). In the light of the candle, the scales shone like diamonds. The creature’s eyes glowed red, suddenly, like hot coals. Its nostrils (鼻孔) flared, giving off heat. Jamie stared. He thought he had never seen anything so beautiful. That’s why he’d decided to call the creature Sharon. He wanted to give a beautiful name to his new pet.
“Gee, Sharon,” he said, “I wish you could talk. I don’t know if you understand me or not. And I’d really like you to tell me how you got here.
The creature didn’t answer. It just looked at Jamie. Its mouth opened slightly and something white gleamed. Jamie thought it was smiling.
“Well,” said Jamie," I hope you’re hungry. I brought you a chicken sandwich.”
The creature looked down at the sandwich, thinking about something else, but made no move to eat it.
“I'll just leave the food here for you," Jamie sighed. “I wish I could stay. But I have to go. Mom is on my case right now. I’d help her. I’ll come back tomorrow after school.”

"Okay, okay, I’ll think about it seriously, but you have to promise to take good care of your pet. You do need a playmate.” Jamie hugged his mother happily. "Oh, thanks. Mom. I'll tell Sharon the good news immediately!" Jamie rushed out.

Dad pushed his finger into my basket. "What's that " he asked.
"Mew," said the basket.
Dad suddenly pulled his hand away. "Oh no," he said. "Not a cat. No way."
I pulled Checkers from the basket. "It's not a cat. it's a kitten. Can I keep him Please "
Dad frowned for a minute, thinking. Then he rubbed Checkers under the chin(下巴). "You'll have to take good care of him."
I hugged Checkers. "I will," I promised. "he won't be any trouble at all. "And Checkers wasn't-until he grew into a cat. He wanted to be the first one in the house -and the first one out of the house. Sometimes he blocked dad in the way. "That cat!" Dad complained. Checkers climbed onto our roof. He had no trouble getting down. Usually he aimed for Dad. "That cat!" Dad yelled. Checkers flushed the toilet and watched the water circle away. " That cat!" Dad was almost mad. Checkers hid in strange places. He liked to surprise people.
One day he hid under the couch(睡椅). Dad walked by with a glass of orange juice. Checkers jumped out. He curled around Dads ankle and attacked dad's toes. Orange juice spilt all over the floor. Dad yelled and put Checkers outside. "Get out of my way, cat!" he said angrily. And he slammed the door.
Dad washed the injured toes and peeled open a bandage. He wrapped it around his big toe, and then he opened four more for his ankle.
I watched from the window. Checkers looked frustrated as he walked down the road. "I'm sorry Checkers scratched you," I said. "He was just playing. He didn't mean to hurt you.
"Don't worry," said Dad. "That cat will be back."
After supper I called for Checkers. But Checkers didn't come. Nighttime came. I called and called. I knocked his food dish with a spoon loudly. But still no Checkers. I left the porch light on. But the next morning Checkers still wasn't there.
I carried a picture of Checkers to all the neighbors. I drew posters and hung them all over. But nobody found Checkers.
Days went by. Life wasn't the same without that cat. I was angry with Dad. I didn't think he missed Checkers at all.

And I, then, warmed up by these two family members, stood up for a while, with tears welling up in my eyes.
Passage 5 家有小鸡
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My husband Andrew, a wise father, teaches our kids how to balance risk with freedom.
We have four chickens: Pecky, Buckbeak, Mayonnaise and Cornflake. My husband made their coop (笼子). It’s beautifully made.
Actually, he made it with our sons and daughter. The kids and their father spent several weekends in the garage. He gave them tools because he believed it was important that they could actually make something. He slowly helped them and together, they made the coop. They also made the mistakes of learning-a board cut too short, nails smashed (打碎) by hammers — but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked perfect.
The chickens loved their perfectly imperfect home and we also gave them free range in the yard. Andrew encouraged our kids to provide the chickens with quite a big area and explained that to take risks is part of life, and by giving chickens the freedom to wander around and dig for bugs, it is a better experience for them than the confines (限制) of the coop.
Yesterday, they ran around the lawn (草地). We needed to go downtown, knowing that chickens wouldn’t go very far. When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Mayonnaise, Cornflake and Buckbeak, looking a mess but still alive. Yet Pecky was nowhere to be seen.
With Andrew, we searched the yard and found some feathers by the trees. Then, we saw more feathers littering the yard. By this time. Gordon started to worry; Pecky was his favorite chicken and his eyes got watery.
Andrew picked Gordon up and held him. As we stood there, beginning to accept that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it-a soft clucking (咯咯声) sound under a bush.

Paragraph 1:
Andrew put Gordon down and they looked under the bush. There was Pecky, a half-naked chicken, still alive though. She looked a mess, with almost half of her feathers gone, but she was absolutely fine. Andrew gently gathered her up and returned her to the coop. Our kids hurried together around, closely watched and gently stroked her feathers.
Paragraph 2:
The next day Andrew had a discussion with the kids about what to do with the chickens. The kids believed that the chickens should be shut in, safe from any dangers in the world. But Andrew disagreed. He believed that we should be more careful when letting the chickens out in the yard. He encouraged our kids to take risks. He explained that love isn’t a coop which restrains them but something that can both provide adequate protection and allow more freedom of living a happy life. Finally, the kids understood their father and they together fenced a bigger area, providing the chickens with the maximum freedom and safety.

While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated,“The medium one is the most reliable.”
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心灵相通).She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking a job. I felt it a heavy duty to apply my energy to the routine walk. Every time I walked Misty, I felt exhausted and fed up. One day, Misty stopped in front of me, unwilling to move forward despite my dragging the rope. Dramatically, all my anxiety, exhaustion and displeasure erupted like a volcano. I knelt down, burying my head in my hands, tears rolling down my face. Then, Misty approached me and laid her head on my knees to comfort me. I was a little embarrassed but grateful for Misty’s understanding. Then I stood up, with my steps firm and powerful.
Paragraph 2:
Months going by, my life changed a little and I came to enjoy my walks with Misty. It felt more like relaxation than duty. Misty shared my negative feelings and kept walking peacefully, which comforted me a lot. Thanks to Misty’s silent companion, I regained the enthusiasm to life and finally went through the hard times. With my unremitting efforts, I eventually got a new job, and so did Joe. Everything seemed to be just fine and my family went back to routine. But something did change—I had an earnest and faithful friend.

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra Abrahamian, and I had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.
His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke (中暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly; his drool(口水) was also thick. Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said he would never be allowed into her new "home" because her children have allergies(过敏症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.
I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save him.

Paragraph 1:
Sandra drove while I stayed in the back seat trying to comfort Bosco. I thought we lost him a couple of times when he was seemingly out of breath and his eyes seemed to close. By the time we arrived, Bosco was wheeled into the animal care center to receive emergency care. Bosco was put on oxygen and was taken good care of by staff there and we waited anxiously for the dog to get out of danger. Rinaldi said another dog in Detroit Dog Rescue had already been named Bosco, and she wanted this new member to have a new name for his new life.
Paragraph 2:
So Bosco is now being called Roscoe, whose critical care and recovery were estimated to be several thousand dollars. It would be difficult for Roscoe’s new home to cover the costs as a non-profit organization. Thankfully, many people who knew Roscoe’s story on Detroit Dog Rescue’s Facebook page donated money to his care. With the help of supporters, Detroit Dog Rescue managed to make it. Once Roscoe was in a stable state, Sandra and I returned to our original mission, knowing we had already been given the chance to help one desperate soul.

The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year I wouldn't just be watching. I'd be riding in Mr. J's truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, looped(环状绕行) the lake, and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. "That's where you are to find the crew," he said.
We came to a stop and I got out of the car.
And then I saw it, a white bird with black stripes, brown head, and skinny legs. It screeched(尖叫) and thrashed(拍打) in the dirt in front of the cars that were driving downhills. Its wings looked broken. Suddenly it shrieked (悲鸣)and flew off.
“Dad,” I called, but my father was watching the balloons.
“It's a killdeer(北美喧鹆).” I turned to see a silver- haired old woman. “It has a nest here somewhere,” she said. “In the parking area ” I asked. She nodded firmly. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area. No one told the killdeer about the balloon festival!”
“Jack!” Dad called “Isn’t it time you went down to meet Mr. J ”
“I have got to go.” I said. But the woman pointed with her walking stick. There, on the ground was a perfect clutch(窝) of speckled eggs, looking like pebbles. They were almost in the path of cars, trucks, motorbikes and stomping feet.
Screech! The parent bird was back, its wing all twisted again. “Jack!” Dad called again. “The balloons are ready to launch.”
“Dad! I am…” A truck roared over the hill. Brakes screamed dust flew. “What’s the matter ” asked Dad angrily from the truck.

A Russian dog named Shavi was hit by a car and the driver left without offering help. She was saved by a woman named Nina who took her in,nursed her back to health, and then found her a home. But Shavi escaped from her new home and walked nearly 200 miles back to be with her guardian angel after two weeks.
Last winter,Shavi had been trying to survive as a street dog during the cold Russian winter when her life nearly ended. She was the victim of a hit and run, which resulted in two badly broken legs, among other injuries. She nearly froze to death, but two cyclists found her and brought her to a vet. They wanted to find Shavi a home to the public, and only one person responded—Nina.
The woman brought the injured dog back to her home, and nursed her back to health. She even taught Shavi how to walk again, and trained her to understand basic commands.
Shavi was a fighter, and on the first day after the surgery, wouldn’t even move herself on the blanket set out for her.Rather, she tried to make it outside, and was found lying on the doorstep. Nina looked after her and spent the next six months helping her recover. Some parts were easy; Shavi was a smart student, and easily learned commands. But she was terrified of strangers and cars, and it took a long time to get her accustomed to the outside world again.
Though she would have loved to have kept her, obstacles prevented Nina from doing so. Her apartment_was too small, especially with three cats and two other rescue dogs, and her job and family commitments kept her from giving the new one as much attention as she needed.
As much as it pained her to do it,she searched for someone to take her in,but the only friends willing to do so lived 180 miles away. They lived out in the countryside, and Shavi would have more room to walk around. Nina believed the new owner was truly the best choice for her.

It was Shavi!Nina burst into tears, hardly able to believe that this dog walked so far just to find her.

What was most fascinating about the reunion is that Shavi also moves others. Passage 10 拯救小鹿
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the best miracle I have ever seen in my life.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking with his usual steps. He was obviously walking with great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出) the water he held in them. I stepped close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck (雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck neither threatened him nor even moved as Billy knelt down. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifting its head with great effort to lap (舔) up the water cupped in my boy’s hands.

When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to the tap. Billy turned it on and began to cup both hands. He knelt down, letting the drip slowly fill up his “cup”. And now I knew what was going on. Obviously, was afraid of being scolded for wasting water, so he avoided asking me for help. When he stood up and turned back, I walked toward him. His eyes were filled with tears. “Mom, I’m not wasting.”
Paragraph 2:
This time I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him tend to the baby deer alone while I just helped fetch the water. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride. I can’t believe it was raining!
