Passage 1 赢得鞋奖品
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Paragraph 1:
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let her sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. She was really nervous whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” he took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up their eyes as the brother and sister hugged tightly together.

Passage 2 纸飞机竞赛
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.
Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.
When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered.

Paragraph 1:
Finally, it was Brian’s turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed – 10 feet past Paul’s plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.
Paragraph 2:
Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best – the paper airplane that flew the farthest – he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.
Passage 3 生命最后看海豚表演
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It’s not easy to die when you are only fifteen. Those were the words that began the story I heard from Robert White, a North Carolina factory worker. He and his wife were visiting their daughter Lee in the hospital as they did every evening.
She knew she had an illness that would not spare her. She suffered a lot but never complained. She had already accepted her great journey into the unknown. This particular evening, she suddenly said, "I always dreamed of working in a big ocean park with dolphins. I’ve loved them since I was little. I still dream of swimming with them, free and happy in the open sea."
She’d never asked for anything, but she said with all the strength she had, "Daddy, I want to swim in the open sea among the dolphins just once. Maybe then I wouldn’t be so scared of dying." It seemed like an impossible dream, but she hung on to it.
Robert and his family talked it over and decided to do everything they could. They phoned a research center in the Florida Keys. "Come at once," they said.
When they arrived in Grassy Key, Lee didn’t want to rest for a minute and begged her parents to take her to the dolphins. Robert took her out toward the dolphins, Nat and Tursi, who were playing about thirty feet away from them. At first they seemed distracted and uninterested, but when Lee called them softly by name, they responded without hesitation. Nat came over first, raised his head and gave her a kiss on the end of her nose. Then Tursi came over happily. A second later they picked her up with their mighty fins (鳍) and carried her out to sea with them. "It feels like I’m flying!" cried Lee, laughing with delight.
Lee’s family hadn’t heard her laugh like that since she became ill. The dolphins stayed with Lee for more than an hour, always tender, always attentive, and always responsive to her wishes.

Paragraph 1:
Maybe it’s true that they are more intelligent and sensitive creatures than man. Those amazing dolphins understood that Lee was dying and wanted to comfort her as she faced her great journey into the unknown. From the moment when the dolphins approached her, greeting her with a kiss, they never left her alone for a second. They swam with her and played with her. In their company, Lee found again the enthusiasm and the will to live. When she got out of the water, it was as if she had been reborn.
Paragraph 2:
The next day she was too weak to get out of bed, but she whispered to her father. “Daddy, don’t be sad for me. I will never be afraid again. It is not easy to face death alone when I am only fifteen, but the dolphins have made me understand that I have nothing to be scared of” She had no strength to talk more. Just before dawn, Robeal’s little girl died in his arms, leaving great sorrow for her family.
Passage 4 永不放弃赢得游泳比赛
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I had been swimming competitively for five years and was ready to quit because I felt I was horrible at it. I was often the only African American at a swimming competition. I kept receiving “Honourable Mentions”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honourable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to break the news to my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her of my desire to quit swimming, she looked me into my face, saying firmly but warmly, “Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear ” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day we arrived at the swim meet late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she was including me in the race so our long drive would not be wasted, and she had no expectations whatsoever that I would come in anything but eighth place and only that because there were not nine lanes.
As I was mounting the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were here to do one thing—beat me! All of a sudden my grandma’s words rang in my head:“Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine. Quitters never win and winners never quit...” “Yes, grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours, ” I said to myself.

Paragraph 1:
SPLASH(扑通一声)! I was swimming harder than I’d ever swum before. As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person. I assumed we were battling for eighth place and I refused to finish dead last, so I added more kick on the last 200 yards. I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beat me, but no one was there. They must have gotten out of the water already.
Paragraph 2:
Just then, cheers and claps overwhelmed me. I raised my head to see my coach screaming hysterically. My eyes followed her pointing finger and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The other swimmers had just reached the halfway point of the pool! That day, at age 15, I broke the national 17/18 year old 400 freestyle record. I hung up my honourable mentions and replaced them with a huge trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.”
Passage 5 我的独唱表演
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The day of my big solo(独唱表演) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and my little brother. It was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. My name was on the cover of the program. “Cindy Hamond … Soloist.” I couldn’t believe it. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee Swanson’s.
Renee and I had been friends since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was always ahead of me. Dance-class recital needs a big finish Renee was picked. Softball She played first base. And the school plays Renee would have the leads. The only time I ever came in ahead of Renee was at roll call(点名). Hamond comes before Swanson. I count that as a victory.
The choir concert tryout was stressful for me. We waited while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins got to the H’s, my heart sped up and my whole body was shaking. When I came back, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.
When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choir group, I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said under my breath, “what else is new ”
Sudden clapping came. Everyone was looking at me. I’ve missed something here, I thought. Ms. Jenkins looked at me, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me. The solos take extra preparation.” Solo I got the solo I could hardly believe my ears. I glanced over at Renee. She smiled and gave me the thumbs-up sign.
Now the day had come, we filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jenkins raised her baton(指挥棒) and we began to sing. I could see my parents were smiling at me.
The spotlight circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jenkins nodded and pointed her baton at me, but I froze right there on the spot.

All that came out was a rusty-sounding squeak(刺耳的声音). But in that same moment, from behind me, came the pure tone of the right note. Renee gave me a gentle poke(轻戳). My voice lifted and matched hers. When the next note came, it was all me.
Paragraph 2:

Passage 6 巧克力冰激凌的运气
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
"Congratulations, son," his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he'd win again.
He's taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. "Mike, we all love ice cream, but it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it's time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming."”
Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn't perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

Paragraph 1:
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He’d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool. As he dove into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. This race was a long one with several laps, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feeling tired.
Paragraph 2:
Finally came the end of the race. Mike’s jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else’s too. Mike had won his race, and he had also qualified for the national championships. The audience and his teammates cheered loudly, and his parents were grinning from ear to ear. “Hey champ, let’s go grab some of your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father. “Thanks, Dad, but I’ll pass on the ice cream; it’s not such a lucky charm after all!”

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens- her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Paragraph 1:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. Her eyes landing on and fixing at the word “Emily”, she screamed in high-pitched voice and sprang up like an exhilarated elf. However, the memory of Mrs. Owen’s words flickered across her mind, casting a surge of gloom over her heart. “What if anyone laugh at me and I fail ” murmured nervously, Emily’s prior excitement gave way to increasing anxiety. She shuffled away from the choral room, torn between anticipation to show her remarkable talent and anxiety of being teased. But ultimately, an irresistible urge to sing grabbed her and she determined to achieve a perfect performance.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of performance came. Staggering to the stage, Emily managed to curve her lips into an elegant arc to disguise her inner restlessness. Her strange body triggered a buzzing noise, which added to her anxiety. Beady sweat oozing (ooze, seep) from forehead, Emily clutched her sleeves to ease her anxiety, and eventually sang a first tone. A hush descended around the crowds and what followed was a wave of thunderous applause. Singing in melodious voice, Emily let her tears of joy splatter freely and through her blurred vision. She visualized a brilliant prospect, where she was no longer a disabled girl, but a singing elf, shining permanently.
Passage 8 教女儿扮演狗狗

In order to collect funds for charitable donation,my sister’s school was going to organize a concert. One of the performances was a short drama called “Christmas Eve”.When the notice was announced,my sister went to register for the drama immediately because she was really passionate(热情的) about role playing.
On the day when students were given their respective roles,my little sister came home without any expression, and her lips tightly closed.
“Are you chosen?” We asked her carefully, trying to not hurt her feelings.
“Yes,” She said a word only. “Then why are you unhappy?” I asked.
“It’s because of my role!” She shouted angrily.
We all knew that “Christmas Eve” only had four characters: the father, the mother, the son and the daughter. “What is your role?”
“They asked me to play the role of the dog!” After saying that,my sister rushed upstairs, leaving us watching each other in silence. We did not know whether to congratulate her or to comfort her for her role as a dog.Dad talked to my sister after dinner, but we did not know what they had talked about.
Anyway,my sister did not quit the performance. She was active in each practice and rehearsal(排练).We were puzzled about what was there to practice in order to play the role of a dog. But my sister was really into the practice, and even bought protection cap for her knees,so that she would not feel the pain when she crawled(爬) on the stage. She also told us that the dog’s name was Danger.
I noticed that every time when my sister was back from the rehearsal, her eyes shone excitedly. I did not know about the real meaning of her excitement until the day of the performance.
On the grand day itself,I opened the pamphlet and found my sister’s name “Jane—Danger (Dog)”.I looked around, the hall was fully seated with many of my friends. I sat back quickly—it’s not such an honor to have a sister who acted as a dog.

Luckily, the light faded out and the performance began. “The father” came out first, followed by other family members. They sat together to discuss the meaning of Christmas. While the family members were talking,my sister Jane, wearing a yellow furry dog costume, came to the stage. She crawled slowly with her hands and legs together, and then yawned, before she settled in front of the fireplace. Then the dog Danger began to sleep. The series of movement were really like that of a dog.
Paragraph 2:
I heard some light laughs from the audience around me. They probably noticed my sister’s movement. Her performance was so excellent that she must have paid great effort during practice. My sister did not said one single word that night, but she won the applause and attention of everyone. After the performance,my sister told us that what changed her attitude was Dad’s words:If you act as a dog with the attitude of the main role, the dog will become the centre of the spotlight.
Passage 9 骄傲的我参加比赛

Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest ” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I didn’t win any prizes—not even a consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I now regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings, “Pride goes before a fall.” and “Practice makes perfect.”
