Over time, the two men became good friends. They shared lots of things together and even talked about what they hoped to do after they got better. But there was one thing about the room that was special for both of them. The man who moved would look out of the room’s only window, describing the scenery outside for his friend. He told him about the people walking by, the weather, anything that might interest a man who had not seen the world beyond his bed for some time.
One day, when a nurse came to check on the two men, she found that the man who often looked out of the window had died in his sleep. Sadly, she informed the other man that his friend had died and called for nurses to take the dead man away. The other man asked to be moved to the dead man’s bed so that he could look out of the window himself. The nurses moved him to the other bed. However, the man found that there was no window at all, just a blank wall.

The guitar in the corner of the room is as silent as it has ever been for years now. It is covered with some dust (灰尘). I could dust it off, but I feel unworthy (不配) of touching it. It had been such a big part of my childhood.
Sitting in the sofa facing the guitar I could almost see him, my Dad, telling me it was the second best thing in his life. I asked him, “What’s the first ” He told me, “You.”
I looked at the guitar remembering the last time I saw my Dad. He was heading out (出海) again. He was always excited because he was so proud to serve his country. He never complained. The only thing that he wouldn’t like was being away from Mom and me.
If I knew it was the last time I would see him, I would never let him go. It was getting late. Half way to my room, I turned around, picked up the guitar and took it to my room. I cleaned it in real earnest. It looked as if Dad had never left. I will never forget how lovely you were as a child. I loved putting you over my shoulder when you were too tired to walk, and reading kids’ books to you on the floor. You were, and still are, an angel.
When I think of you as an adult, I think of your big heart. It’s your heart that helps you care for family and friends in need. For this reason I have chosen three hearts as a dad’s gift for you.

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. In this case he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged (乞求) him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and begged for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked (哽咽) up and all my disappointment (失望) and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands.” For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time.” and hung up.
Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were surprised at the way he had turned himself around.
After the meeting, Karl said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year ” I nodded. “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That’s when I knew I had to make you proud.”

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. In fact, Jack moved clear across the county to realize the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind.
“Jack, did you hear me ”
“Oh, sorry Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce (回忆) about the many days you spent over his side of the fence as he put it,” Mom told him.
“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.
“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said.
“He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next fight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack ” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said.
“What box ” Mom asked.
“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention. “Mr. Harold Belser” it read.
Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.
“Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bernett. It’s the thing I valued most in my life.” A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.
Inside he found these words carved: “Jack. Thanks for your time! Harold Belser.” “Oh. My God! This is the thing he valued most.”
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days. “Why ” his assistant asked.

My grandma had a wonderful day yesterday at my mom’s house for Thanksgiving. She didn’t remember our names or the last time we were all together. She asked us a million questions, most repeating from just moments ago. What my grandma did know at that point was love. The whole family were focused on her laugh and her smile.
Grandma raised all of us. She let us ride mattresses (床垫)down the stairs, ski on the little hill in her backyard. and watch movies at late night. She taught all 9 grand kids how to swim in the pool. She taught us how to be creative, make Christmas cookies, and help those less fortunate (幸运的 )than us. It’s hard to believe that she doesn’t remember our names or other children’s. But for her sake it’s all OK. I told her that it was just alright and that that was how it was supposed to be. As long as she’s happy, the memory doesn’t need to be there.
There’s one name she does remember, though. She called him by his name: Charlie, Her Charlie. We miss what my grandma used to be and miss her Charlie. But yesterday was a wonderful day for us. We had her laugh and through that laugh and the way she said his name, we had Grandpa there too.
