The Tang Poems
To understand the listening materials.
To read two poems and discuss some questions.
To practice reading the poems aloud.
You will hear four interviews. In each of the interviews, one person is asked to answer questions about poetry. Listen to it for the first time with following questions.
Do they like poetry
What sort of poetry do they read
Can they quote any lines
1. Listen to the interviews and answer the questions.
1) What does Matthew like doing
Listening to songs.
2) What can’t Matthew remember
He can’t remember names.
Modern poetry.
3) What sort of poetry does Emma read
4) What happens when Emma reads it
She thinks the poems are good and then she forgets them.
5) What did Annie’s dad have to do at school
To learn poems by heart.
To read poetry.
6) What did Annie have to do at school
7) What sort of poetry does Jonathan like
Those ones that have rhymes and rhythm.
They’re personal.
8) Why doesn’t Jonathan want to read his own poems
2. Read the two poems that Emma and Jonathan chose on Page 77. Work in pairs and discuss the questions.
The first one is about walking in the countryside and seeing a lot of yellow flowers; the second one is about how time passes quickly and we have no control over it.
1) What are the poems about
The individual confronted by the world beyond his/her control: in the first poem the mass of flowers; in the second, time.
2) What (if anything) have they got in common
3) What (if anything) have they got in common with Farewell to a Friend
The first one has the natural setting; the second one has a note of sadness.
4) Do you think anything is lost when a poem is translated into another language
3. Listen to the poems and answer the questions.
1) Which words rhyme in each poem
first poem: cloud–crowd;
hills–daffodils;
trees–breeze;
second poem: hour–power
2) Which are the old-fashioned words in Wordsworth’s poem
o’er, vales & host
Now work in pairs and practise reading the poems aloud.
Which do you prefer and why
Rewrite the sentences with the correct phrase from the box.
