Vocabulary and Listening
1. Work in pairs. The sentences below are from a listening passage that you will hear. Read the sentences and guess what’s happening.

a. A young woman suddenly screamed, “Oh my dear brother!” and threw her arms round his neck.

e. It was a rough neighborhood and it was already dark.
f. The man dragged him into a narrow street and pulled him along so fast that he could not even shout for help.
2. Work in pairs and discuss the questions.
1) Is the neighbourhood safe
The neighborhood is not safe, because the sentence tells us it was a rough neighbourhood.
2) Why don’t people try to help Oliver
Because they are cold-hearted.
3) Where does the man take Oliver
He takes Oliver to the place where the thieves live.
Listen to the passage. Check if you guessed correctly and answer the questions.
1) What is Oliver carrying at the beginning of the passage
Oliver is carrying books.
2) Why does the young woman describe Oliver as naughty
She says he ran away from home.
3) What does Oliver say about the young woman, and the man who is dragging him away
He said that he didn’t know them.
