Since being introduce to chess at age of six, Tanitoluwa “ Tani” Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world’s youngest-ever grandmaster- the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12 years and 7 months.
On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani came one step closer to achieving his dream by becoming America’s newest national chess master. The title, awarded by the US Chess Federation, requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. The boy, who practices for up to 11 hours every day after school, says the secret to his success is thinking of his plays ahead of time. Tani told NPR, “In a normal position, I can do up to moves in advance.”
The now fifth-grade fell in love with chess in 2017 after being taught the basic by a part-time teacher at his elementary school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother couldn’t make up her mind to allow him to join the school’s chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four were living in a homeless shelter and did not have extra funds to spare.
When his mother explained the family’s situation to the chess club’s instructor, Russell Makofsky, he immediately waived(免除)all costs for the young boy. Tani did not disappoint those who supported him. Less than a year after joining the club, he had won seven awards. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he beat 73 competitors to win the New York State K-3 scholastic championship. His moving story went viral and a GoFundMe campaign(活动), set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough funds for Tani and his family to move into a new house.
24. What's the main factor in Tani’ success in his own opinion
A. Practicing chess for a long time every day.

C. Thinking twice before making a move.

Previous studies have shown that children with attention difficulties solve cognitive(认知的)tasks better when they are listening to white noise. However, this is the first time that such a link has been proved between visual(视觉的) white noise and cognitive abilities such as memory and reading.
The study was conducted on around 80 students. The children who took part were selected following a word recognition test and were divided into three groups: good readers, children with some reading difficulties, and children with major reading difficulties. They were asked to read 12 words while being exposed to four different levels of visual white noise, from zero to high.
The results showed that the group with major reading difficulties performed significantly better when exposed to visual white noise. They read more words correctly and also recalled more words. The white noise had no effect or negative effects on the good readers and those with only small reading problems.
The children in the study were exposed to different levels of white noise, with the result showing that the amount of noise is the key to reading and memory. “You can compare it with being shortsighted and needing glasses. When we exposed the children to a medium level of white noise, their reading improved. However, their reading skills were affected when there was no noise or a high level of noise,” said G ran S derlund, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Gothenburg.
“These results show that children with reading difficulties can be helped with a simple intervention(干预).By altering screens in school or at home, we hope to be able to resolve their problems,” added G ran ,
G ran wants to further study the effects of white noise. He hopes that new studies can answer the question of whether practicing with white noise for a prolonged period can lead to lasting improvements. “It’s important to continue with new studies to establish whether this simple measure, which everyone can do on the laptop, will actually provide continuous help for these children.
28. How are the students divided into three groups
A. By their study habits.
B. By their reading abilities.
C. By their personal interest.
D. By their learning environment.
29. The study results show visual white noise can_________.

B. cause good readers to become more active and energetic
C. make students with small reading problems unable to concentrate

30. What is important to the good effect of visual white noise
A. Wearing a pair of protective glasses..
B. Getting a proper level of visual white noise.
C. Having a good knowledge of visual white noise.
D. Fixing the eyes on the screen as much as possible.
31. What does the underlined word “altering”in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Adjusting. B. Covering.

The world’s first-ever floating(浮动的)farm is expected to open soon. The farm is located in Rotterdam, a port city about 50 miles away from Amsterdam. Built near the mouth of the river Meuse, the farm consists of three levels.
About 40 cows will be moved to the second level of the farm in November. The level above them will house greenhouse that grow grass and crops needed to feed the cows. Meanwhile, the bottom level will hold any necessary machines and packaging for the milk and yogurt. By December, the farm is expected to be producing more than 200 gallons of milk per day.
In addition to producing fresh milk and yogurt, the farm produces and sells fresh food that runs through a closed cycle and ends up at the customer. This causes almost no waste, bringing the reduction of food’s travel from production to consumers.
The farm is the idea of Minke van Wingerden, a partner in the development company behind the project, Beladon. In 2021, she and her husband got caught in Hurricane Sandy during a business trip to New York City. With the storm preventing food delivery trucks from getting on the road, local people were unable to find fresh produce in stores.
The event pushed wingerden and her partners to find a way to produce food closer to people’s locations in order to avoid losses of supplies in the future. They eventually came up with the idea of floating farms, which would make use of otherwise unused space in the water and meanwhile shorten the distance between stores and farms.
After launching the Rotterdam project, Beladon will work on opening more floating farms. The company is designing floating chicken farms and floating vertical(垂直的)farming greenhouses. The company is in talks with another Dutch city for a second farm.
Wingerden and her husband also believe that new communities should be bulit with food access in mind. The area by the Port of Rotterdam, for example, is on track to be filled with residential space and offices in the next several years, and Wingerden said food production should be at “the heart of that community.”
32. What do we know about the floating farm from the text
A. It is a farm without any grass or plants.
B. It can produce more milk than expected.
C. It has three levels with different purposes.
D. It is planned to be used in certain climates.
33. What is the advantage of the floating farm
A.It offers custom-made food.
B. It cuts the cost of shipping.
C. It plays a role in recycling wastes.
D. It acts as a shelter in a hurricane.
34. How did Minke van Wingerden get the idea of the floating farm
A. With the help of the scientists.
B. Through her personal experience.
C. By getting encouraged by the news.
D. By making research on the technology.
35. What can we infer about the floating farm from Wingerden’s words
A. It makes it easier for people to get food.
B. It saves more residential and working space.
C. It helps people learn about food production.
D. It improves the attraction of new communities.

第3节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After I finished my senior year, I got a part-time job working at a local coffee shop. I had thought that job would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I pictured myself pouring the best delicious coffees, and becoming close friends with the regular customers.
What I hadn’t counted on were the people with many orders to use the drive-through(免下车的)window, or the customers who felt there was always too much sugar, too little ice, or not enough skimmed milk. There were moments when I was annoyed. However, I kept at it.
On a rainy day, one of my regular customers Hank came in looking depressed(沮丧的). I asked what the problem was and if I could help, but the customers wouldn’t tell any details. He just said he felt like pulling the sheet up over his head in the bed, and staying in it for a few years. I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he felt, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn’t ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favourite type of doughnut.
“It’s me,” I told him. “Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before turning around and heading back out into the rain.
The next day was a horrible one. The rain poured down and everyone seemed to be using the drive-through window. I spent my afternoon leaning out of the window, and handing people their orders. I tried to smile but it was difficult, as they sat in their temperature-controlled cars with the window rolled up, while I dealt with huge drops of water hanging from my hat, and a shirt that was entirely wet around the collar. On top of that, none felt like tipping(给小费)that day. Every time I looked into our tip jar, with its small amount of pennies, I grew more depressed.
Paragraph 1:
Around seven o’clock, however, my day took a turn for the better._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para 2: “Thanks for being so sweet and thoughtful yesterday. I was sincerely moved by you. Have a nice day!” Hank’s words brightened up my day.
