The Tang Dynasty was an imperial dynasty of China,
preceded by the Sui Dynasty and followed by the Five
Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.Historians generally
regard the Tang as a high point in Chinese civilization,and
a golden age of cosmopolitan culture.The Tang capital
at Chang'an (present-day Xi'an)
was the most populous city in the
world in its day,with the population
of about two million inhabitants.
Chang'an was the center of the central government,the home
of the royal family.However,the city of Yangzhou along
the Grand Canal was the greatest economic center during the
Tang era.
Yangzhou was the headquarters on salt,and the greatest
industrial center of China;it acted as a midpoint in shipping
of foreign goods that would be organised and distributed to
