This unit covers vocabulary, phrases and concepts associated with the Olympics and other sporting events.In this lesson, students will briefly learn about the history of Olympics and discover how the modern Olympics have evolved. So in this lesson, at the beginning of this class, I play a guessing game to arouse their interest. Then, study this passage step by step. I.Guessing gameTeacher arranged two riddles for students. One is herself and the other is Olympics. Show students some pictures and let them guess what it is or who she is. Students can guess the riddles by watching these pictures. At the beginning of the class, teacher should arouse students’ eyes and catch the whole class, build a relaxed atmosphere.
II.listen to the audio and fill in the blanksFrom this step, teacher began to get rid of the passage. Listening is the first step. Teacher just gave a short and easy passage to ask students to fill in the blanks. Listen to the short passage and fill in the blanks. In this step, students can develop their listening skill. III.Fast-readingAsk students to do the fast-reading and answer two easy questions in 4 minutes. Students read the text as soon as possible. While reading, students would think about two easy questions. Fast-reading will check students’ reading speed and the understanding for the text. How to catch the key points in the passage.They should be practiced in the daily exercise.
IV. Read and TranslateAfter listening and fast-reading, students could catch the main idea of this passage. But they need to learn the details and some important or difficult points. So teacher would ask them to read and translate with their partner sentence by sentence. Students read and translate the whole passage with their partner sentence by sentence. Develop students’ skills on reading and translation. Practice their cooperation with others.
VI.TranslationTeacher would give students some Chinese phrases and they must translate them into English. Students would answer them together. Teacher got rid of the passage in three steps. Then students would recite some key phrases.
VII.ExerciseTeacher would pick up some exercises related to the important and difficult points. Students did these exercises and speak out why they chose it as the right answer. Check students whether they understand these key points.
