在西餐厅的餐饮单上,人们常见到bread and milk, lemon and oil 等复合名词指一种食物或饮料,同学们所学的fish and chips也属此类,它是一道菜。and连接两个表示食物的名词,指某一种合成食物或饮料,此时and含有“与......合起来”的意思。前后两个名词的次序是固定的,不能颠倒,因为它们有“主从”之分。一般来说,前面名词表示的成分是主要的,后面名词表示的成分是从属的。
