Fifteen years ago, my world ended. My husband of 19 years was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Over the course of seven months, Bill went from beating me silly at tennis to needing my help to go to the bathroom. It was the best seven months of my life.
Perhaps I don’t actually mean that. But it was certainly the time when I felt most alive. I discovered that the minor complaint of an annoying co-worker, or a flat tire pales in comparison with the beauty of sincere laughter, or the smells of a bakery. There were moments of joy, laughter, and tenderness. After Bill’s diagnosis and brain surgery, I found clinical trials and talked to doctors in Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York. It gave me a sense of purpose.
In the latter days, being Bill’s caregiver also meant being fully present for as many moments of every day as possible. During his last weekend, we had dinner together. Later, a relative visited. I noticed that she’d changed her appearance, and not in a good way. It was the kind of thought I’d usually keep to myself. Just then, Bill voiced exactly what I’d been thinking, in that truthful way he had, and I found myself laughing out loud.
I thought I could look after this man forever. However, he would be dead in four days.
Fifteen years later, I haven’t started a foundation to cure cancer. I haven’t left the news business to get a medical degree. But every day, I try to again be the person I became during those seven months. I try to be a little less judgmental, a little more forgiving and generous. I am a better person for having been Bill’s caregiver. It was his last, best gift to me.
What is true about her husband
A. He was a poor tennis player.
B. He had to talk to doctors in different cities.
C. He had to be accompanied mostly during his illness.
D. His brain didn’t function well because of the surgery.
22. What does the underlined word “pales” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Proves unavoidable. B. Becomes more significant.
C. Turns whiter than usual. D. Seems less important.
23. What is the best title of the passage
A. A Caregiver’s Hard Work B. The Greatest Gift to Me
C. The Best Time of My Life D. My Loving Husband
B
Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose — to make a call Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects
“No one picks up the phone anymore,” wrote Alex C. Madrigal on The Atlantic. “The reflex (习惯性动作) of answering — 20th-century telephonic culture — is gone.”
The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.
Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.
In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automated messages from organizations verifying (核实) your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to YouMail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.
As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate (隔离) them.
“The shared family phone served as an anchor for home,” said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. “With smart phones, we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been decreased, and so has its ability to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps connect families more closely,” Fernandez said.
Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.
What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text
People’s wide range of communication choices.
People’s preference for robocalls.
C. People’s addiction to social media.
D. People’s growing need for privacy.
25. What can we infer from Fernandez’s remark
A. Smart phones make families closer.
B. Smart phones help people monitor family behavior.
C. The use of mobile phone has affected family bonds.
D. The value of home depends on how phones are used.
26. What does the article mainly talk about
A. The past and future of the telephone.
B. The downfall of traditional telephone culture.
C. The development of communication tools.
D. The relation between phone use and family bonds.

Tokyo University laboratory has developed a robot that never loses at the game of Rock Paper Scissors. That is because its visual processing abilities and fingers work together faster than any human brain. A video of the robot has been watched by more than 3 million viewers on YouTube since going online at the end of June.
Tokyo University engineering professor Masatoshi Ishikawa has a good-natured response to frustrated human losers who accuse him of essentially creating a robot that cheats. “It is not cheating. Every one millisecond (千分之一秒) the image processor decides and recognizes the shape the human hand is going to make. And then the robot can make a winnable shape one millisecond later than a human being. Only one millisecond, but a human cannot see this difference because the human eye is very slow,” explained Ishikawa.
At the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory there has been amazing progress which shows the near perfect accuracy of robotics, such as a robot that can catch a falling egg without breaking it, another one that can tie a knot, and a robot that may not be quite ready for the NBA, but is able to dribble (运球) a ball.
In sports such as baseball and cricket, the misses outnumber (比…多) successes for even the most skilled athletes. That is not so in this award-winning school laboratory. For instance, an intelligent robot is the result of five years of research and a lot of trial and error. And the cost of just one finger on the robot is equal to that of a mini car.
The technology obviously has uses beyond fun and games. Corporations are eager to take advantage of the lab’s technology for industrial and other practical uses. And there is talk of applying it to assisting disabled people and improving human capabilities.
27. What brings the robot so much attention on the YouTube
A. It plays online games much better than any human.
B. Its eyes and fingers can work at the same time.
C. It can do whatever people tell it to do.
D. It never loses in the game against humans.
28. Ishikawa’s explanation suggests that the robot ____________.
A. proves to be dishonest B. responds faster than humans
C. works slower sometimes D. is lucky to win the game
29. The author proves that a robot is skillful and accurate through __________.
A. performing an experiment B. telling an interesting story
C. offering some practical examples D. ordering it to do something hard
30. Which section of a website is the text probably taken from
A. Science and technology. B. Human and society.
C. Sports and games. D. Relaxation and entertainment.
第二节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。
Cat behavior can often be puzzling and confusing to humans. 31 Veterinarian Dr. Katrina Warren shares her expertise on some common and strange cat behaviors to help you understand why your cat behaves the way it does.
Scratching (抓挠) is a natural behavior for cats. It’s how they make their paws sharper. If cats do not have a suitable surface to scratch, they will choose your furniture or carpet. To protect your furniture, provide at least two scratching posts. These posts need to be stable so they don’t rock or tip over. 32 Cats tend to scratch when they wake in the morning, so place one post close to where they sleep.
Cats love high places, which give them a sense of safety and allow them to watch everything going on below. 33 And make sure you have several cat items in front of windows so your cat can look outside. If your cat can watch from high up and see the world outside of his home, he is less likely to climb onto the kitchen cupboard and knock down the bowls.
34 They have the surprising ability to tie themselves in knots without any difficulties. They curl up in unconventional (非常规的) beds, like vases, because they have special bones on the back that allow them to do this. And they take great pride in showing this to you continuously.
If cats eat grass, there are several reasons. They may be seeking the nutrients (营养物) in the grass or, if they have an upset stomach, inducing vomiting (催吐). It is not a problem if your cat enjoys eating grass. But make sure it hasn’t been treated with pesticides (杀虫剂). Alternatively, offer your cat a pot of clean cat grass to chew, especially indoor cats. 35 If you have any concerns about your cat’s behavior or frequency of vomiting, please talk with your vet.
Sleeping positions of cats are unusual.
They need nutrients in the grass more.
Having a rough surface is also required.
This is available from most plant gardens.
However, there’s often an explanation for their actions.
Meanwhile, high places offer them larger space to jump.
Put up several shelves so your cat can leap from one to another.

W: That’s right. The 18-year-old is a basic requirement. You need to fill out some forms and bring two of your one-inch photos.
M: OK. Does it cost anything to join
W: Well, it’s free for students of our college, but otherwise it is 125 pounds per year or 35 pounds per quarter.
M: How many books can I borrow one time
W: If you are a student here, you can borrow ten books and two magazines. For public members, it’s only six books.
M: And what will it be if I return books late
W: The fine is two pounds per book every day.

W: Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute
M: Sure. What’s up
W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined two months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.
M: Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet
W: Usually the last Saturday of the month at 9:30 p.m. Every month, we choose a new book.
And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.
M: What book are you reading now
W: The Kite Runner.
M: What’s it about
W: It’s about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1970s. It’s called The Kite Runner because the main character takes part in a kite-flying competition. It’s really a good book. I’m almost finished.
M: Sounds interesting. I’d love to come.
W: OK, great. The next meeting is in another two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.

Hello, everyone, I’m Monica. I’m from New Zealand. New Zealand is an amazing tourist resort. For people going to New Zealand, there are three or four places that they must see. It depends on what you’re looking for really.
A lot of people that come to New Zealand enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, so there are lots of outdoor activities and places you can go to enjoy. In particular, there are two ice mountains there, Franz Joseph and the Fox Glaciers. You can visit them on foot or pay for a helicopter ride that will show you a bird’s eye view of them. If you want to see rural New Zealand, it’s a good idea to drive through the country as then you will be able to see the farms, particularly in the lower part of the South Island. There are a lot of sheep and cattle as well, so I think it’s a good idea to go for a drive and see them in person. Another thing I’d strongly recommend is to go to a city like Rotorua, which is in the centre of the North Island, to experience Maori culture. There’s a Maori village and you can listen to Maori songs and see the hot springs and mud pools there.
