Food festivals around the world
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors’ petition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy , but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing’s for sure—if you don’t like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn’t for you!
La Tomatina—The World’s Biggest Food Fight
On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world’s largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.
The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash!

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to ideas that they possess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening.” H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lankan’s Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yale National Park in the southeast, Sri Lankan’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven,” said Matthew van Leroy, an animal behavior specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.
“There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting.” he said.
Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.
“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters.” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators[
The idea of an animal “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lankan’s damaged coast is likely to add to.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we have really known is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up in our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar(粗俗的).

30. In order not to make our speech silly and vulgar, we should __________.
A. choose words with care and accuracy

D. become a master of words
31. The best title for this passage would be _____________.

Her name was Mrs Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn’t play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is the joy to be around. ”His second grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle. ” His third grade teacher wrote,“His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn’t show much interest.” Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯) with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume.

Hello, everyone!
It’s my honor to talk about “Gratitude to Our Parents”.
As is known, China has a great many traditional virtues passed from generation to generation. Among these virtues, being grateful is a typical one. We should show most gratitude to our parents without whom there would be none of us.
I think actions speak louder than words. From now on let’s show our parents love and respect, help with the housework, perform well and try to live up to their expectations.
Thank you for your listening.

As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the excellent children in the class.
Ten years later, Teddy invited Mrs Thompson to attend his wedding as his mother. She used the bracelet and the perfume which were the present of that year. At the wedding ceremony, she met the man with good manners. He said to her, “Thank you, Mrs Thompson. Today you smelled just like my mom used to.” Mrs Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, “Teddy, you were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I'm so proud that today I can be your mother!”

Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes , roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course.,可以判断:四个队伍,穿着滑稽搞笑的服装,在50米的路程中卷一个完整的奶酪。以及后面倒数第二句括号里面的内容:but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones这个奶酪是木头的。
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their destination is the Fiery Eood and BBQ Festival可以知道人们到新墨西哥是为了参加Fiery food festival。故选A。

B
字面上的意义为“第六感”,根据短文第三段“I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening”进行推测,其含义为:动物的某种神秘力量能预测将要发生的事。
参见文章中“The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up in our minds.”
D
