What kind of amusing activities will you participate in during your life Will you spend your free time doing safe sports with little danger or will you always be one of the first people to try the next popular extreme activity Scientists have been interested in finding out why some people seem to prefer dangerous activities.
Although there are exceptions, researchers have found that in most cases men are less cautious than women.Men often try to impress women by proving that they are courageous and fearless, and they are more likely to take risks when women are watching them or when they are competing against other men.
Research also shows that as people get older they usually behave more responsibly and avoid taking unnecessary risks. In addition, when people are in stable relationships, they seem to be less attracted by daredevil activities.

Interestingly, research shows that women take more social risks than men. They are more likely to make career changes as they get older and to express unpopular opinions in business meetings.
Yet,at the end of the day,the likelihood of particular people taking risks depends on their personalities. In general, optimistic people are more likely to take risks because they focus on the possible positive outcomes of their actions. As spring arrives, farmers around the world are making decisions about what crops to plant and how to manage them.In the Us.farmers typically have big data to help make these decisions. These data have a clear upside. They make farms more productive. In the US,the past five years have seen a series of good harvests for both corn and soybeans,A bis part is generated by effectively using data to produce more food from the same amount of land, seeds and fertilizers.
In the poorer parts of the world, however, the picture is much different. Many farmers are guided only by their history with the land and their community's traditions.Their skills and knowledge are impressive, but they suffer from a poverty of data. They rely on technical advisors for advice from governments and academic centers who often have very little knowledge of the local area. For seeds and fertilizers and other materials used in the field, they rely on companies that lack data on how their products will perform in the local conditions.
About 10 years ago,East African officials and their development partners started to explore why so few smallholder dairy farmers made profits from growing demand from urban consumers.Surveys of farmers in the region suggested poor access to veterinary(兽医的)care and breeding assistance. An effort to provide these services has helped farmers get more milk.
Data would matter little if farming was easy and the paths to productivity were obvious. But in reality, agriculture is a complex mix of many factors, including climate, biology, chemistry, physics, economics and culture-all of which vary from region to region. In this situation, good data is necessary.

In the past five years, about 2.8 billion of school textbooks were sold per year, with total spending of 20 billion yuan,a news magazine reported, citing data released recently by the National Press and Publication Administration.
If these textbooks are reused for one year, the costs saved can be used to help
build around 40,000 Hope Schools in impoverished regions.
The figures show that in 2018,the number of retailed textbooks for primary and secondary schools was 2.93 billion copies, totaling 25.99 billion yuan,If all of them are reused,a total of over 20 billion yuan will be saved per year.
Zhao Dehua,in charge of a company recycling resources, said many college graduates sell the textbooks they have accumulated over the years at an average price of 1 yuan per kilogram. As these textbooks are mostly used to produce recycled paper, the cost is even higher than that of producing raw paper as the processing procedure of recycled paper is complicated.
At present, free textbooks related to music, art and PE for the nine-year compulsory education have been reused, but account for less than n fraction of the total number of textbooks. Because of the supply chain obstruction, which increases the costs of matching supply with demand, the lack of sound platforms and service supporting systems for the second-hand textbook trade, most of the textbooks used for compulsory education and higher education end up as waste.
"Every year,second-hand booksellers collect textbooks at a price of about 4, 000 yuan a ton, which is more than twice the price of ordinary waste paper, but there are few people who come to collect second-hand books," Zhao Dehun said.
Besides, the incomplete policies and regulations might bring second-hand book sales platforms and sellers to legal risks.
"Establishing the system of textbook recycling can not only save resources, but also help to cultivate students' consciousness and sense of responsibility,"said Zhu Pin,deputy head of a school of nine-year compulsory education in Jiangxi Province. The school has set up a system for reusing the textbooks and the books are disinfected every week.
1.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.College students sell textbooks in order to make profits.
B.Recycled paper is mainly used for environmental considerations.
C.The cost of producing recycled paper is greater than that of producing raw paper.
D.Certain groups of collectors tend to choose second-hand textbooks.
2.What is the problem of reusing textbooks
A.It is blocked because of lack of funds.
B.The supply of recycled textbooks is not adequate to meet the demand.
C.The regulation of second-hand textbooks has not been carried out yet.

The term “quietstress” attracts experts’ attention, who say it’s an often overlooked form of stress, compared to the more widely known version, which is characterized by visible outbursts:losing your temper, swearing, shouting, and anger.
“We quietly hold our stress within ourselves: We don’t speak up about how we feel. And very importantly,we become inactive. We stay in unhappy relationships and unfulfiling jobs.We feel overwhelmed(被压垮的), yet ignore important administration tasks. Quiet stress creates a form of emotional paralysis(麻痹)that keeps us ‘stuck’ in unhappy situations,” says Jillian Lavender, who runs the London Meditation Centre.
Cary Cooper,a professor of psychology and health at the University of Manchester, likens the effects of quiet stress to shrapnel(飞溅的弹片): “You can learn to quieten your stress responses, but eventually the stress will emerge,as well as a suppressed immune system;you may withdraw socially, isolate yourself and begin to engage in unhealthy habits like comfort eating or drinking too much. Despite getting a bad rap over the years, expressing anger or frustration is far healthier than smiling sweetly while you are feeling quietly stressed.”
A recent study from Stanford University in the US backed this theory up. The researchers found that seeing stress as a helpful part of dealing with life's challenges, rather than as something to be avoided, was associated with better health, emotional well-being and productivity at work.
"Stress isn't always harmful," said Kelly McGonigal, a business school lecturer at Stanford who worked on the study. “Once you appreciate that going through stress makes you better at dealing with it,it can be easier to face each new challenge.”
1.Which behavior belongs to “quiet stress”
A.Reacting inactively. B.Speaking up.
C.Smiling sweetly. D.Scolding others.
2.What is the best way to relieve quiet stress according to Cary Cooper
A.Developing good habits. B.Eating much junk food.
C.Finishing tasks on time. D.Making your feelings known.
3.According to Paragraph 4,stress is
A.something beneficial sometimes B.something harmful to health
C.something to be kept D.something affecting work
4.Which of the following statements can describe stress according to the text
A.Silence is gold. B.Life is not easy.

As the world’s population continues to increase,so does the amount of global waste people produce. According to data collected by the World Bank Group, nations will generate 4 billion tons of waste annually by the year 2100.The pollution from trash is not only ruining the world's oceans, air and soil but endangering all living creatures.
For years government agencies have been telling citizens to live a zero-waste lifestyle. Traditionally, manufacturers would make a product to be used and thrown by consumers. This linear model of production offered no help in the fight against global waste. Alternatively, a circular economy has been introduced. This is a system which aims to minimize waste and restore used materials. Once a product's value is exhausted, the materials are recycled and returned to manufacturers. The outcome is less waste.
In 2016, The Wall Street Journal reported on Taiwan Island's recycling success rate in an article titled The World's Geniuses of Garbage Disposal. In 1997,Taiwan established its signature 4-in-1 Recycling Program, consisting of communities, recycling enterprises, government cleaning teams and the Recycling Fund. Residents separate their recyclable waste and bring it to their community's recycling locations. The local government collection teams and private collectors collect it. Recycling companies buy waste materials from them to generate profits. Importers and manufacturers who are responsible for the recyclable products pay a fee into the Recycling Fund. The Recycling Fund is an essential aspect of the program used to subsidize(资助)the recycling disposal system, support education, research and development as well as finance recycling efforts in the future.
By following a circular system, more products than ever are being manufactured using recycled materials. For example, used tires can be recovered to pave roads, while plastic is reused to make new plastic products. And it also helps to conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, save landfill space and even create new job opportunities.
1.Why has a circular economy been introduced
A. The population is on the rise.
B. It can help handle global waste.
C. The living creatures on the earth are getting less diverse.
D. Traditional products are not environmentally friendly.
2.What can we learn about the 4-in-1 Recycling Program
A.The recyclable materials can be collected officially or privately.
B.The importers and manufacturers cover the costs of the program.
C.Recycling companies buy waste materials from the residents.
D.The government invests money as the recycling fund.
3.What’s the effect of the circular system
A.It will cause no waste or pollution.
B. It reduces the costs of the products.
C.It helps lower the unemployment rate.
D.All the materials can be recycled again.
4.Which of the following does the text suggest
A.Do nothing by halves.
B.All that glisters isn’t gold.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.One man's trash is another man's treasure.

When I was growing up. I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives,he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.
Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said he had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how,if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.
So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he’d beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees' attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be torn apart.
1.What did the author think of Doctor Gibbs's way of planting trees at first
A.Perfect. B.Puzzling. C.Amusing. D.Impractical.

A.Kind and wise. B.Calm and brave.
C.Careful and ambitious. D.Strict and devoted.
4.What does the author learn from Doctor Gibbs
A.Elders are treasures.
B.Two heads are better than one.
C.A man without vision must have immediate suffering.
D.Only those who bear the most become the strongest.
