“It’s a store for old people, I know,” she says loudly as we walk in, much to the amusement of the sales associate (销售员) standing nearby. Today, she’s wearing a small animal-print dress. She begins to search the clothes store for something bold. As a 15-year-old, I just wanted to dress normally, but Oma – with her dyed (被染色的) hair and strangely colored clothes – existed in a unique world of style. I envied her confidence.
She had self-love. She expressed herself exactly as she wanted. Once her husband, my Opa, died, she showed her love for herself through how she looked. In her early 80s, Oma shopped with the excitement of my 10th-grade girlfriends but with a lot more confidence.
She encouraged me to look my best and always checked in on me, even though most of our relationship was long-distance. This meant I had lots of missed calls and texts asking how I was doing.
She loved to connect with others and would call me several times. Once she told me how she had spent the whole afternoon talking to friends and family all over the world. Her voice had become weak but she still managed to ask me: “Are you making time to have fun ” Each check-in was a reminder to pencil in fun to my schedule.
As she got older she still didn’t change, although she spends less time outside of the house. When I asked her what she got up to inside, she laughed as she admitted she liked to wear her most comfortable clothes around the house, telling me it made her feel like she was in bed all day.
When I asked about her helpers who were checking in on her in her townhouse, she told me: “I have to wait for them to leave to eat my chocolate!” Sitting in my room as I talked to her on the phone, I couldn’t help but realize that I had been eyeing my own dark chocolate collection all afternoon.
I wish that I’d thanked her for all of the wisdom she’d been passing on to me throughout all of my adolescent and young adult life. If it hadn’t been for her lessons in self-love – her guidance in caring for myself and enjoying life in all its stages – would I be the person I am today

My partner and I wanted to spread some joy this Christmas, so we decided to organize gifts for the residents of a local nursing home.
I posted our plans on Facebook. My aunty and two of my friends sent me money to go toward gifts. Then one of the ladies who works at a different branch (分店) of the store where I work sent me over a huge box of chocolates, biscuits and sweets to add to the presents. We purchased lots of food and gifts for the residents and carefully wrapped them.
A man called James who saw my post offered to drive us to the home and another lady messaged me saying she had her own gifts she wanted to give. It was lovely to see people coming together to help.
So, on Dec 22, we were all ready to go and be Santa’s elves (精灵)! James picked up my partner and me, and we headed to the nursing home with 74 gifts plus a few extras for good measure! After signing in, putting on our masks, gowning up (穿上长袍) and having our temperature checked we were in. We were ready to spread the Christmas cheer.
I was a little nervous as it was my first time in a nursing home and I’m shier than my partner who has no trouble talking to people whatsoever. But once the nursing manager began taking us round to everyone’s rooms, I saw the smiles, surprise and happiness on their faces. I was so happy to be there and it gave me so much joy. We went to everyone’s rooms, wished them a very happy Christmas and gave them each a small gift of soaps, hand creams, biscuits, chocolates, etc.
It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend that people do something like this as it will bring you so much fulfillment and happiness. The feeling of giving people gifts is simply wonderful.
I’m already planning a visit for Easter when the Easter bunny might be stopping by!
