Growing up in an underdeveloped zone of Johannesburg, South Africa, Musa Motha says his
surroundings weren’t exactly ideal. Soccer was his favorite sport, and he fondly remembers the times
《新高考学科基地秘卷》命题组 高三英语·共 10 页,第 3页
he played for the local youth team. But when he was 10 years old, he was injured in his left leg. This
changed everything.
A bone marrow biopsy(骨髓活检)revealed Motha had osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in
his left leg. While his soccer injury was not the cause, it did draw attention to the already-present
cancer. He chose the amputation(截肢)and ever since that day, he decided he was going to approach
life differently—more positively, he said.
True to his word, Motha, now 26, can be seen twirling(转动)across stages around the world.
He first encountered dance at a neighborhood party, where he asked a friend to teach him some
modified moves. “Then I danced the whole night,” he recalled. His talents did not go unnoticed; he
began appearing in South African TV ads and shows. He even appeared in Drake’s One Dance music
video.
Motha thinks that representation needs to extend beyond the performing arts. “The more we can
see the disabled person in multiple aspects of life, such as helicopter pilots, engineers, chefs,
choreographers and professors, the greater hope we can hold onto for a society where no one is on
the margins,” he said. That’s Motha’s dream as well.
Though he said that dance gave him “a purpose”, he added “I don’t want to see myself as a
dancer only”. He wants to create a space for other people with disabilities to go outside their comfort
zone—from soccer to singing. He feels that greater representation will create more opportunities and
inclusion, paving the way for people with disabilities to shine. “Instead of telling a sob story, I find
that the most beautiful stories are after the amputation,” Motha said. He encourages others with
disabilities that they, too, can do anything: “There’s a whole lot of things that you can overcome and
that actually define how strong you are.”
24. What caused the discovery of Motha’s cancer
A. The terrible living environment.
B. The routine medical examination.
C. The accidental injury in his left leg.
D. The high amputation of his left leg.
25. Why does Motha refuse to see himself as a dancer only
A. To indicate that dance is no longer his favorite.
B. To inspire the disabled to go beyond themselves.
C. To stress he hasn’t gone outside his comfort zone.
D. To show off his talents in more aspects of his life.
26. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Everyone can make a difference.
B. Most of our dreams have come true.
C. Not all disabled people are influential.
D. No disabled people have been prejudiced.
27. Which of the following can best describe Motha
A. Brave and humorous. B. Friendly and sociable.
C. Humble and creative. D. Optimistic and ambitious.

African grey parrots can live more than 50 years, memorize dozens of words in English and, if
given the chance, outperform (胜过) a group of Harvard students in a classic Shell Game.
Griffin, a grey parrot, is the subject of a recent study published May 6 in the journal Scientific
Reports. Researchers challenged Griffin to a working memory task where he had to locate a colorful
ball hidden under a plastic cup after it was shuffled(改变位置) around a table several times.
Meanwhile, 21 Harvard students were given the same task—and Griffin matched or outperformed
them in 12 of 14 trials.
“Think about it: Grey parrot outperforms Harvard undergrads. That’s really awesome,” lead
study author HragPailian, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, told The Harvard Gazette. “We had
students concentrating in engineering, pre-meds, and he just outperformed them.”
To be fair, Griffin is no average parrot. According to the study authors, the 22-year-old bird “has
been the subject of cognitive and communicative studies since his acquisition from a breeder(饲养
员)at 7.5 weeks of age.”
Griffin’s bird-mom, Irene Pepperberg—a Harvard psychologist and co-author of the new
paper—previously taught the parrot to reproduce some 30 English words and to comprehend at least
40, including the names of colors. As such, Griffin didn’t need any special coaching to learn the
Shell Game—Pepperberg merely demonstrated a few sample rounds for him, just as she did for
Griffin’s human competitors.
The participants completed 120 rounds of the game spread across 14 trials, which got
progressively harder. By the end of the day, the participants had to keep track of four
different-colored details under four cups, which were shuffled four times. Griffin was able to find the
target ball with higher accuracy than the children in all 14 trials.
The parrot’s performance suggests that its memorizing ability may have evolved(进化)from a
common ancestor millions of years ago.
28. What is the purpose of the research
A. To set the task to the Harvard students.
B. To test the memorizing ability of Griffin.
C. To locate a colourful ball hidden under the cup.
D. To shuffle the cups around a table several times.
29. How did HragPailian feel about the outcome of the Shell Game
A. Puzzled. B. Satisfied.
C. Impressed. D. Disappointed.
30. Why could Griffin outperform the students
A. It was acquired from a breeder.
B. It had received relevant training.
C. It had grasped 30 English words.
D. It was showed more sample rounds.

A school’s “peace room” aims to end fighting in the halls
By the time Marquita Riley, 16, and Aaliyah Hudson, 17, ended up in their school’s “peace
room,” rumors (传闻) had floated through the halls that the two girls were going to fight.
The peace room at Manley is a part of the school’s restorative justice initiative, a growing social
movement that, among other things, focuses on healing and teaching how to solve conflicts. The
philosophy aims to bring together victims and offenders to cooperatively work through their
problems.
The concept is increasingly being used in schools, community centers and churches in Chicago
as a way to teach young people how to analyze their anger. They learn to confront tension before it
turns violent. It is also being used as an alternative to punitive (处罚的) measures, like suspensions
and arrests, which can lead to more trouble for hurting communities.
The idea is that “when harm happens or someone misbehaves, there needs to be a process of
restoration in order for the community to move forward,” said Ilana Zafran of Umoja Student
Development. Umoja runs restorative justice programs in Chicago schools.
The concept forces all sides in a disagreement to communicate and understand one another
instead of resorting to violence. There may still be punishment for wrongdoing, but restorative
justice emphasizes identifying hurt and thinking of ways to fix it.
“A lot of our kids don’t want to be involved in fights. They don’t want to be suspended or away
from school,” Jackson said. “We had to create an environment of peace. High school has to be a
pleasurable experience for our kids. If they come here and feel the same anxiety they feel in the
streets, how can we expect them to stay ”
Among the people there were Marquita and Aaliyah, the two girls rumored to be gearing up for a
major fight. After another 20 minutes of discussion, they agreed they had simply misunderstood each
other. The girls decided they would not fight, and promised they would talk it over if they found
themselves facing tension again.
32. What is Manley’s peace room aimed at
A. Preventing rumors from spreading.
B. Developing students’ team spirit.
C. Helping students restore relations.
D. Warning students to behave well.

33. What may result from lack of restorative justice in communities
A. Alternatives to punishment. B. Violent tension.
C. Processes of restoration. D. Controlled anger.
34. Which can replace the underlined phrase in Paragraph 5
A. Falling back on. B. Putting up with.
C. Looking back to. D. Making up for.
35. Why does the author give an example of Marquita and Aaliyah
A. To prove effectiveness of peace room.
B. To show the harm of campus violence.
C. To explain the reason for suspension.
D. To introduce kids’ school experiences.

Humans have been known to develop strong connections with dangerous animals. Werner
Freund, aged 79, has spent the last 40 years of his life in the company of wolves. While why the
former soldier became attached to these beautiful wild animals is a little unclear, he has been caring
for them since 1972. 36 Thus, Werner has the great ability to survive in the period of entering
this group of animals and getting along with these cold-blooded creatures.
37 They touch him with noses, play with him. What’s more, they are generally very
submissive when he is around, just like they would be around a head wolf!
This, however, does not happen by chance. 38 Whenever it’s feeding time, he calls his
pack to come for the raw meat by howling. As the hungry animals rush to get their food, they always
meet with this scene. Werner sinks his teeth into the raw meat first.
What may sound a little cruel is how the position of hierarchy (等级制度) is built in the animal
world. 39 When he signals, the rest of the pack can join in. Werner’s wolves know this rule
quite well and never challenge his authority.
Wolves, the largest member of the dog family, are mistakenly believed to be dangerous. 40
They are beautiful gentle souls, whose reputation has been spoiled by fairy tales like Red Riding
Hood!
A. But in reality they rarely attack humans.
B. They are considered as the smartest beasts.
C. Werner works on it with a simple act every day.
D. Werner seems to know where wolves come from.
E. It is always the strongest male that gets the first meal.
F. The wolves treat Werner as if he were one of their own.
G. Army experience leaves him a strong body and energetic state.

Just an act of kindness changed a boy’s life forever.
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails. It
had a long strap, and she carried it across her shoulder. It was about eleven o’clock at night, dark,
and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to seize her purse.
But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance. He
fell on his back on the sidewalk and his legs flew up. The large woman simply turned around,
reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled (发出格格
声).

By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching.
She did not release him. “Lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. Ain’t you got anybody home to tell you to wash your face ”
“No’m,” said the boy.
“Then it will get washed this evening,” said the large woman, starting up the street, dragging
the frightened boy behind her.
He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen in tennis shoes and blue jeans.
The woman said, “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do
right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry ”
“No’m,” said the being-dragged boy. “I just want you to turn me loose.”

“Go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman. The water dripping from his face, the
boy looked at her. There was a long pause. After he had dried his face, the boy turned around,
wondering what next. Without saying anything, the woman left and walked to the kitchen. She
heated some beans and ham, and set the table. The woman did not ask the boy anything about
where he lived, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him a lot
about her job.
When they had finished eating, she got up and took out ten dollars from the purse. “Now here,
take this. From now on, I hope you will behave yourself.” She led him to the door and opened it.

Text 1
W: Did you pass your physical exam
M: No, my eyesight is bad. I need to get glasses. Finally, I’ll be able to see better! (1)
W: You’ll fit in, too. Most of the people I know wear glasses.
Text 2
W: Fasten your seat belt, sir.
M: Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize that we were going to land so soon. (2) I was so comfortable that
I almost thought I was in my own car.
Text 3
M: Are you going to take German again this year
W: No, I didn’t do so well in the class. I’m going to try Italian instead. It’s closer to French,
which is what my grandmother speaks to me, so it should be easy. (3)
Text 4
M: That was relaxing! There’s nothing like some exercise in the pool before going to work!
(4)
W: It’s a good way to work off a big breakfast, isn’t it Why don’t we meet at the café at noon for
a coffee and a sandwich
M: Sure.
Text 5
M: Sarah, make sure you give the kids dinner at six, and have them in bed by eight. Don’t
forget to have them brush their teeth and call us if you have any problems.
W: OK, Mr. Chu. (5)When will you return
M: We’ll be back by ten.
Text 6
W: Look at your pants. They’re all wet! I thought you were getting a ride home today.
M: I was going to get a ride from my friend Michael, but he forgot he had basketball
practice after school. (6)
W: Oh, no! You should have called me.
M: That’s OK. I didn’t want to wait for you to pick me up. Because I wanted to come back home
earlier to finish my essay.
W: Good thing you took an umbrella. Give me your shoes, and I’ll dry them on the heater.
(7)
M: That’s the least of my worries. (7)I think the rain ruined my watch!
Text 7
W: Do you have everything for school Textbooks, lunch, pencils, paper
M: Yeah, yeah. I have everything I need.
W: Aren’t you leaving a little late It’s already 8:40. School starts in 20 minutes. (8)
M: I know. I’m getting a ride from Greg’s sister today. She’ll be here in five minutes. I’ll still be
10 minutes early by the time I get there.
W: Oh, OK. But why are you wearing shorts You are going to get sick.
M: It’s not that cold. I’ll be inside most of the day, anyway.
W: I guess you’re right. The forecast said it will get warmer in the afternoon. Here! Take some
money for the soda machine. (9)
M: Thanks. Oh! There’s Greg’s sister! I’ll be back around 3:50, OK
W:All right. Have a good first day! And please tell Greg’s sister to drive slowly!
Text 8
W: I feel like doing something fun tonight.
M:Why are you so happy (11) Did you get that pay raise you wanted
W: Not yet, but tomorrow is my last day before I get my two-week vacation. (11) I just bought
myself a new dress and some shoes and I want to wear them out tonight.
M: So that’s what it is. Sure, then. What do you have in mind
W: First, I want you to take me out to a fancy dinner.
M: I can do that. What would you like to eat
W: Surprise me. I’m adventurous when it comes to eating.
M: Should we go see a movie after Perhaps a love story
W: No way. I want to watch something that will make me laugh. (12)
M: That sounds perfect. (12)We can sit in the VIP theater, and have a glass of wine.
W: Then we shouldn’t drive. It is close to the subway station, anyway.
M:Why don’t we walk home along the ocean side (13)
W: Great.(13) Cabs are too expensive.
M: True, and it sounds like I need to save my money for dinner.
Text 9
M: Look at that! The tracks are above the train!
W: Yeah, it’s a new system that’s fully electric, too.
M: Isn’t that how most trains operate these days (14)
W: Yes, but this one uses a special battery that can be recharged. (14)
M: I’ve never seen anything like it before.
W: Actually, it’s the third of its kind. The first one was built 100 years ago in Germany. (15)
There’s another one in Japan, too.
M: It’s so quiet. I can barely hear it. (16)Is that because it runs on batteries
W: Apparently it uses rubber instead of steel wheels. Also, it is built with new materials that
are flexible and lightweight. (16)
M: It’s good to see our world is using green energy now. Burning fuel just creates pollution.
W: China is leading in other areas, too. I’ve heard there are some villages that rely completely on
solar energy.
M: Isn’t that strange Are small villages doing more to help the environment than the big cities
W: Very true. But big change always starts small. Do you do anything that harms the environment
M:Well…I drive. (17)
W: There’s an example. You could take a train, a bus, or even a bike to work like I
do.(17)
M: Yeah, but…then I’d have to wake up earlier.
W: Like I said, big change starts small.
Text 10
The Dead Sea is located at 1412 feet below sea level. There is so much salt in the water that
there are very few plants and animals that are able to survive there. That’s why it got its name “the
Dead Sea”. The salt makes the water so heavy that if you were to swim in it, you could basically
float. The minerals in the sea have been used for health products such as skin creams and
soaps. (18)Unfortunately, the sea is disappearing rapidly. This is mainly because of how little
rainfall it receives each year.(19)Some have said it could possibly be the result of seawater
sinking into the earth, which creates sink holes. These can be deadly, but luckily there are many
signs to warn people and very few deaths have been recorded. The only source of incoming water
is from the Jordan and Mujib rivers, but they are not large enough to keep water levels. Recently,
pipelines have been built to connect it with the Red Sea to solve the problem. (20) Hopefully,
the waters will return to their normal levels, and we won’t lose another world treasure.
