For many people, barbecues are a chance to enjoy a meal with family and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May, when a severe tornado (龙卷风) hit Joplin, about two hours from Hays’ home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the word to his partners and headed down with his barbecue. “We thought we’d be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals,” Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. “A barbecue community is able to respond to disasters like this quickly,” Hays said. “So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief.”
During the last eight years, the group has responded to almost 60 disasters across the United States, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the group often partners with other organizations to serve the meals.
“Barbecues are comfort food,” Hays said. “If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad stuff in your life. That’s worth it to me.”
24. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Volunteers couldn’t meet the requirements.
C. Hays’ home was severely damaged by the tornado.
B. The need for food was beyond Hays’ expectation.
D. Supplies were far from enough for the victims.

C. His friends’ suggestion. D. His cooperation with other organizations.
26. Which word best describes Hays
A. Strong-willed. B. Good-tempered.
C. Broad-minded. D. Warm-hearted.

Every year, billions of bars of partially used hotel soap are thrown away around the world. Those bars of soap finally end up in landfills, when they could be saving lives.
Worldwide, approximately 1.8 million people in underserved communities—including 1 in 4 children—die annually because of lack of access to soap and clean water. These heartbreaking statistics are what drove Hilton to launch a first-of-its-kind soap-recycling program.
The soap-recycling process starts with discarded soap that is collected from hotels and donated to a soap recycling center where it’s made into new bars and then donated to communities around the world. Not only are these new soap bars eco-friendly, but they also help prevent diseases and reduce death rates. Just one bar of recycled soap provides an estimated 180 handwashes.
Today, to mark Global Handwashing Day (October 15), Hilton is further expanding our life-saving program: Soap recycling will now be a brand standard in selected regions, with the program extending to include over 5,300 properties in more than 70 countries and territories.
Hilton’s role as a leader in soap recycling started back in 2009. Hampton Inn by Hilton in Orlando International Airport became the first hotel to donate discarded soap to Clean the World, which has since become the company’s largest soap-recycling partner. More of our hotels caught wind of the program’s success and began to recycle soap themselves.
As our founder, Conrad Hilton, once said: “To achieve big things, you must first dream big.” At Hilton, we are leading by example and making our dream of a cleaner world, a “greener” hotel industry and a more sustainable future a reality.
28. What was the purpose of Hilton to start recycling soap
A. To meet the need of the hotels.
B. To clean the polluted water.
C. To reduce the annual death rate.
D. To reduce the waste of resources.
29. What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Cleaned. B. Thrown-away. C. Gathered. D. Discovered.
30. Why did other hotels begin to follow suit
A. They were motivated by Hilton’s success.
B. They wanted to be the leader of hotel industry.
C. They wanted to learn from Conrad Hilton.
D. They were determined to clean the world.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Recycling Soap—a Trend in Hotel Industry
B. Recycling Soap—a Way to Save the Earth
C. Hilton—the Example of Hotel Industry
D. Hilton—a Leader of Recycling Soap

The alarm sounds. Students swing their backpack over their shoulders, board the school bus, make their way to their homeroom and the bell rings—school is back. But for more homes in America, school looks more like students waking up, making their way to the dining room or home office, setting up laptops and learning in the comfort of home.
Virtual (虚拟的) schooling, defined as “a public school that offers only instruction in which students and teachers are separated by time and/or the location, and communication occurs through computers and/or telecommunications technology”, has increased over the past decade. K12 serves students in all 50 states and more than 100 countries with digital learning platforms and technology, providing online education. “We always are improving our platforms and the technology that we use to make sure that we’re keeping up with the changing trends (趋势), not only with education but also with technology,” Dr. Kelly Van Sande said. Another piece of new technology they’ve rolled out is a new app where parents can find virtual schools available in their area.
Carrie Faulkner chose to enroll two of her children in Arizona Virtual Academy. She says they’ve done schooling online in Chicago, in California, at restaurants and on her cousin’s floor in Kansas. “It doesn’t matter whether her son is on the couch, in his bed or at the kitchen table—he can do schooling wherever he wants to,” Faulkner said. “I wish they had it for me back when I was in school. That would have been fantastic.”

My opinion on copying others’ homework
As we know, some students copy others’ homework. Maybe there are certain reasons. First, We students have lots of homework to do both at home and at school, some of which is too hard to work out. Second, Some students lose interest in their lessons.
However, copying others’ homework is a bad habit. It not only breaks the school rules, but also makes us lose the ability to think. Personally, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to teachers and classmates for help.
Let’s take action to prevent such bad behavior.
