1. 表示的状态不同
一般过去时：表示过去某个时间发生的动作或存在的状态。（动作已完成）
过去进行时：表示过去某一时刻正在进行或过去某段时间持续发生的动作。（动作尚未完成）
2. 句子结构不同
一般过去时：主语 + was/ were + 其他
主语 + did + 其他
过去进行时: was/ were + doing
3. 进行时态的其他用法
有时带有感彩，特别是带有always，
forever，constantly这类状语时
表示现在的想法，
可以显得客气一些

while and when 的区别
区别一、
When
可以和延续性动词连用，也可以和短暂性动词连用
Eg：
Sorry，I was out when you called me．
（call为短暂性动词）对不起，你打电话时我刚好外出了。
While
只能和延续性动词连用.
Eg：
Strike while the iron is hot．
（is为延续性动词，表示一种持续的状态）趁热打铁。
区别二
When
when从句的谓语动词可以在主句谓语动作之前、之后或同时发生.
Eg. ①When he had finished his homework，he took a short rest．（finished先发生）当他完成作业后，他休息了一会儿。
②When I got to the airport，the guests had left．（got to后发生）当我赶到飞机场时，客人们已经离开了。
While
从句的谓语动作必须是和主句谓语动作同时发生.
①When ／While we were dancing，a stranger came in．（dance为延续性动词）当我们跳舞时，一位陌生人走了进来。
②When ／While she was making a phone call，I was writing a letter．（make为延续性动词）当她在打电话时，我正在写信。
区别三
When
既可以表示某一点时间，也可以表示某一段时间。
when引导的时间状语从句多用于一般时态。
While
只能表示某一段时间，不能表示某一点时间.
while引导的时间状语从句多用于进行时态。
总结
when 从句的A事件，相当于另一个事件B发生的时间点。也就是说，when 从句的重点不在动作本身发生的状态，而只是把它作为一个时间点，所以when 多数情况下用的是一般过去时，则不用现在进行时。因为如果用现在进行时，它表示的就是一段时间而不是一个时间点了。
相比于when 来说，while 从句的侧重点就不一样了。while 从句的侧重点在于描述动作正在发生的状态，它的意思是：当while 事件正在发生的时候，另一件事如何如何。所以，while 从句一般用的是现在进行时。而另一件事的状态没有硬性的要求，根据具体情况而定
