Module 3 Journey to space
阅读理解
A
I work at a university in the US where my team and I are trying to learn more about the American black duck, a kind of water bird. And now we are using an exciting piece of equipment (设备) called a “night vision scope”. By using it, we can see the ducks in the dark.
We're worried about black ducks mainly because their numbers are falling hugely. And we don't know whether there's enough food on the east coast for these birds. There's lots of information about their daytime activities, but nothing about what they do at night, because we simply (的确) don't have the equipment. But this new “scope” will make really clear pictures, even on moonless nights, so we will be able to find out more about the ducks.
It is very hard work. There are four of us, and we each work six hours every day. We study ducks in different places, and I sometimes have to take a boat to where I need to work. The weather is not helpful because most of the time it's wet. Oh, and it's so quiet that sometimes I need coffee to stop me falling asleep.
But I like this job. Over the summer, we will spend hours in a laboratory, where we will look at our results together. It will be hard to stay there every day because of the hot weather — but it is very important to do this!

A. show us a new equipment
B. tell us what kind of work he does

Astronauts have already visited the Moon and lived on space stations. They've never been to another planet, but they might visit Mars soon. Astronauts will spend about six months getting to the planet, then about two years on the planet and about six months travelling back to the Earth. They'll be away from the Earth for about three years, so they'll need much food.
It's very expensive to take food into space. It costs about 120 000 dollars to carry something that weighs(重) one kilo(千克). So an apple on Mars could cost 20 000 dollars! Of course, they will need to take much food with them to feed the astronauts for three years. This amount of fresh food can't stay fresh, and is very expensive to take, so they need to find food that is not very heavy.
At the moment, astronauts in space stations eat dried food. It's very light, so it doesn't cost much money to carry it into space. But astronauts stay healthier and happier if they eat fresh food. In the future, astronauts on Mars may grow vegetables like carrots and lettuce(生菜).
Astronauts on Mars will probably have special machines. They'll use these machines to change beans(豆) into food that tastes like meat or cheese. They probably won't eat real meat or cheese because it won't be possible to keep animals in space.
( )1. Which planet do the astronauts plan to go to next
A. Mars. B. Space. C. The Moon.
( )2. How long will it take to get to Mars
A. About three years. B. About two years. C. About six months.
( )3. Why do the astronauts eat dried food
A. Because it is cheap to carry.
B. Because it is cheap to buy.
C. Because it is very healthy.
( )4. What may astronauts do in the future
A. Eat only dried food.
B. Grow some fresh vegetables on Mars.
C. Grow food in their spacecraft.
( )5. What will they get from beans
A. Apples.
B. Food that tastes like meat or cheese.
C. Real meat and cheese.

Space travel has given us a lot more than just some pretty pictures of Mars and a few footprints on the moon. It’s taught us so much about the universe and changed how we live here on the earth.
The world’s first space travel agency(旅行社) has opened in Britain because more and more people want to travel into outer space.
The agency will arrange everything from flights to accommodation(住宿) for the public with prices from $250,000 to $791,666.
“Being an astronaut is a childhood dream for so many people. ▲ So this gives people the chance to experience it for a few weeks,” said Kai Feller.
The experience will allow people to enjoy zero gravity(重力) and the beauty of the earth from space, as well as seeing about 16 sunrises and sunsets a day.
When you get into space, some really fun things can happen to your body. On the ground, gravity pulls your spine(脊柱) down. In space, without gravity, you may get a little taller. A few other ways the body can change in space are that the heart gets smaller and the eyeball gets bigger.
Are you ready to try a space travel Any changes in our bodies and anything that happens in space, it’s worth(值得) it for the space travel.
( )1. Where is the world’s first space travel agency
A. In America. B. In Britain.
C. In Australia. D. In Russia.
( )2. The underlined word “arrange” means “ ”.
A. produce B. change C. plan D. catch
( )3. Which of the following sentences can be put in the “ ▲ ”
A. However, it’s quite a difficult job to get into.
B. Luckily, we can take you into outer space.
C. Certainly, you will know more about the earth.
D. Surprisingly, not everyone is interested in space.
( )4. If you travel into space, you can .
A. become much healthier
B. do some interesting research
C. try working on the space station
D. experience several sunrises and sunsets a day
( )5. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To show us how to live in space.
B. To tell us something about space travel.
C. To advise us to become astronauts some day.
D. To let us know how our bodies change in different situations.

Remembering the names of the planets in our solar system can be easy if we practise. Here are some ways to help you quickly remember the planets.
Sing a song
Setting the names of the planets to a song may help you remember them better. A number of songs can help you remember a basic fact about each planet. One example is “Planets Song”. You can easily get it from Amazon or iTunes.
Search online for other planet songs and their videos.
Listen to an audio recording(音频录音)
Many people can learn information better when they hear it spoken out loudly. Make an audio recording of yourself and say the names of the planets in it. Repeat(重复) it several times in the recording. Listen to this recording over and over again.
Teach the planet names to someone else
When you have to teach information to someone else, you need to know the information pretty well yourself. This can help you remember it better.

Dear classmates,
If I could have a chance to choose, I would like to live on Mars.
First of all, I think Mars would be a clean place without pollution. Secondly, living on Mars would be great fun. We wouldn’t have traditional classes at school, because we could study online. And we could play lots of exciting games like low-gravity ball games. When we were free, we could take a spaceship to Mars’s moons and have a good time there. Thirdly, travelling would be easy on Mars. We could drive cars like flying planes because cars would float in the air. We needn’t worry about traffic jams. It sounds fantastic, doesn’t it (110 words)

My Journey into Space
I’m interested in space. I hope to have a space travel in the future.
If I have the chance to go on a space journey, I will be very excited about it. Of course, I will feel a little nervous. It is my first time to go into space after all. I will take my cellphone, iPad and camera with me. I’d like to take spacewalks in space and listen to my favourite songs. I also want to take pictures of our earth and other planets. If I can talk with my parents and friends through the cellphone, that will be great. I’m looking forward to my journey into space. That will be more interesting than most of my journeys.
And I believe with the development of the technology, my journey into space will come true. (136 words)
