“Baby girl, where are you ” Surrell called out wildly. His throat and lungs burned as if he'd
inhaled fire instead of the smoke and ash in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was
the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟) emerged. Still unable
to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for
any sign of the girl. A horrible thought crossed his mind: I'm probably gonna die up here. Finally he
touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. Her body was limp (跛行) and
she wasn't breathing. He scooped(抱起) her into his arms and rushed out.
The next thing Surrell knew was that he was lying in the hospital. When he woke up, he found
himself surrounded by flowers and delicate greeting cards. Then a lovely face came over and whispered
a soft “thank you” in his ear, and he knew the beautiful angel was fine. Pictures of burning sofa and
cracking wood started to flash through his mind. He remembered the heat of the flames on his cheeks
and how he fought through the smoke and put Tiara down on the porch. Although the fire exacerbated
Surrell’s lung condition, and he had to take extra medication that helped open his airways, he felt it
his duty to save the little one from blaze and said “It’s a small price to pay and I’d do it again in a
heartbeat without giving it a second thought.”
A
Carolyn Hax的回复中提到“he still needs you around and wants your approval”,
There’s an interesting person developing in there.”“脾气不好并不是最重要的,有一个有
根据Linda所说的第一句话“Been there.
Write to Carolyn Hax ... Get her column
delivered ...”
由第二段“My entire focus was towards maintaining classroom discipline (纪律).
It was tough.”
由第三段“My permission resulted in a stir and restlessness as half of the class
stood up to leave.”
由第四段作者的话语“You constantly blame me for not allowing you to leave
early because you have a bus to catch and here you are still hanging around at 5 pm!”“你们
由最后一段“I learnt the first lesson of my life as a teacher — learn to empathize
(共鸣) with your students…”
由最后一段第一句话“…the twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness…”
由文章第三段第一句话“Researchers at the Paris Brain Institute studied people's
ability to find a hidden rule in a maths puzzle.”
The results showed that 83 percent of those in the N1 group
had found the shortcut, compared with 31 percent in the group who were awake and l4 percent
of those in a deep sleep.
同时,只看本段也可推断出来:“a “hidden rule” would allow
them to bypass most of the steps and get to the solution much more quickly.”“隐藏规则可
最后一段“Researchers conclude that the brain activity common to the twilight
zone between sleep and wakefulness set off creative sparks.”“研究结果证实临睡状态可激
发创造力火花”,同时博士的话“our findings suggest that there is a creative sweet spot
within the twilight zone”“我们的发现表明临睡状态确实存在创造力的最有效点”,可
由第四段中“opens up a richer window into the environment around us.”
Engaging the public in science is essential for
basic science findings that influence how we perceive the world around us.”
由倒数第二段“In many cases, scientists and experts already have strongly held
biases about the way the world works, and these biases allow mistaken conclusions to persist.
Public observers often make better observers of the world around them because they lack
preconceived ideas.”

W: Good morning. My name is Julie Hartwell, and I’m going to talk to you today about your firefighter
training program. The program lasts for three months. During this time, you’ll learn about ladder
safety and some equipment. The college has over two acres of grounds, where we can create real
fires for students to practice on 一 under safe conditions, of course. We will learn how to fight
fires on trains, fires in buildings and fires at petrol stations. This is a very important part of the
course because it helps to get used to working in very hot, smoky places. If you want to apply for
this course, you must be 18 years of age or over, have a full driving license and be very fit. You
must also be able to work as a part of a team and be able to solve problems in very difficult
situations. The other thing you need to remember before applying for this course is that you will
often be working when your friends are enjoying themselves. If you have any questions, please
come and see me in my office, which is Room 116 on the first floor.
