Think of an ordinary object — a piece of chalk, for example. Do you remember its name, its shape or its colour Do you remember what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense(感官). They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice(注意) something with your senses. Then messages join together to form a connection(连接). The connection goes into your short-term memory. It stays there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or staying in your long-term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and keeping them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughing also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember new information, you must use your senses and learn the information again and again. To remember something special, imagine something unusual to create connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it’s fun and it works.

Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.
Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put them.
Perhaps you’ve had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven’t realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you just accept that, the following will show you how.
First, relax. If you are over worried about something, you’ll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t follow up with saying like “Oh, my god! I always forget things! ” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.
But relaxing isn’t enough. To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities to exercise your memory. For example,
if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.
If you don’t take notice of things actively, you won’t remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don’t just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you’re putting them.

He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.
Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain Could it "talk" to other computers
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web ( WWW ) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.
Tim Berners-Lee doesn't think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.
Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

Here is good news for people who have trouble in remembering things. Recently, the scientists believe that a method invented by the ancient Greeks can greatly improve ordinary people's memory. You may even become a memory champion if you practice hard enough.
If you want to improve your memory, you need to imagine a place that you are familiar with, such as your living room. Then, you should remember as many details about this place as possible, because this is your own mind palace. For example, if you want to remember a shopping list, you can spread out all the things on the list around the living room in your mind. This means each thing on your list is connected with a remembered place in your living room. You can remember the things on the list by getting to those remembered places. Once you are familiar with this method and know how to use it, you will keep excellent memory.
People can greatly improve their memory by using the “mind palace”. To study this method, experts from Netherlands brought 51 people together. These people hadn't been trained in memory before. They had a 30-minute memory training every day. After 40 days, they doubled the number of words they could remember. At the beginning, they could only remember 26 words from a list of 72 words. After the training, they could remember 62 words. Four months later, even without continued training, their memory is still excellent.
Maybe we need to do more tests to understand how to use the “mind palace”. This method is really useful to remember important things in our daily life.
41. Who invented the method “mind palace"
A. A memory champion. B. The ancient Greeks.
C. The Greek scientists. D. The experts from Netherlands.

c. Imagine a familiar place. such as the living room.
d. Remember the details of the living room.
A. b-a-c-d B. c-d-a-b C. c-b-a-d D. a-c-b-d
44. Which of the following is true
A. The living room is the "mind palace
B. 62 people join in the experiment about this method.
C. After training, people can keep a better memory.
D. Going to different places can help people remember important things.

You can remember the face, but can't remember the name of the face. 46 But researchers say it is often easier to remember names than faces.
Researchers showed 40 pictures of strangers and a list of names to twenty-four people. 47 the result showed that the people could remember up to 85% of the names but only 73% of the faces. According to the study, led by the University of York, this may be because faces can be only remembered through eyes. However, names can be both spoken and written down. 48 When people meet famous persons, they also remember their names better than their photographs.
Rob Jenkins, a professor from York University, said "Our study suggests that many people may be bad at remembering names. 49 " This will surprise many people because it is different from our understanding. ___50__ As a result, middle-aged people may feel embarrassed when they meet their old friends.

You can remember the face, but can't remember the name of the face. 46 But researchers say it is often easier to remember names than faces.

According to the study, led by the University of York, this may be because faces can be only remembered through eyes.
