Basketball has become one of the most popular sports in the world. But do you know about the man behind the sport
James Naismith was from Canada. He was born on November 6, 1861. There were three children in his family and he was the eldest. In 1869, James moved to Grand Calumet with his family but his parents died of disease one year later. So James and his brother and sister began to live with their grandmother. Unluckily, in 1872, his grandmother died and James’s uncle started to take care of the three children.
From 1875 to 1877, James attended the Almonte High School. However, he was not good at school work and he liked to work in the family fields and woods when he was at school. So he left school and worked. He returned to school in 1881 and completed it 2 years later. After that, James continued his study at the McGill University.
In 1890, James became a sports teacher of Springfield College in New England. When he taught there, there was a problem with his classes. In winter, it was so cold that it was hard for students to play sports in the open area. So he decided to create a kind of sport for playing inside the building. He had three major ideas. First, the ball should be soft and big. Second, passing(传球) should be the main way to move the ball. Third, the sports should encourage exercise. With these ideas, he created 13 major rules of basketball and designed the place for playing the sport.
Soon, students of many schools joined the new game and the basketball game first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1936.

The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it! Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it’s true. Maybe you have the wrong idea about inventing, so read on to discover the truth.
Wrong idea NO. 1: An invention has to be something new.
Inventing means creating something new, but the idea could come from something that already exists(存在). The Wright brothers, for example, got the idea for building a “flying machine” from watching birds.
Wrong idea NO. 2: Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors(因素)that make inventions possible. Take Mozart for example. He was born with an endowment for musical composition. But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practiced for hours every day, from the time he was four years old. Einstein said that “being a genius was 1% talent and 99% hard work”!
Very successful creators don’t give up when they get something wrong. As one inventor said, “A failure is the right answer to the wrong question.”
Wrong idea NO. 3: Inventors are always old people.
Don’t believe that you can’t invent something when you are young. Here are two examples of young inventors: Louis Braille went blind when he was a child. When he was fifteen, he invented a system of reading and writing for blind people that is still used in most countries today.
As a young man, George Nissen was watching some artists performing in a show. He watched how they fell into the safety net and then jumped back up again. This gave him an idea and he invented the trampoline(蹦床).
29.________ got the idea for building a “flying machine” from watching birds.
A.Mozart B.George Nissen C.Louis Braille D.The Wright brothers
30.The underlined word “endowment” probably means “___________”.
A.态度 B.品质 C.天赋 D.能量
31.According to the passage which of the following is TRUE
A.Anybody can do inventing.
B.Inventors are born, not made.
C.Inventors are always old people.
D.An invention has to be something completely new.
32.The best title for the passage would be “___________”.
A.How to Perform in a Show B.Be a Composer
C.How to Help Blind People D.Be an Inventor
【答案】DCAD

29.细节理解题。根据“The Wright brothers, for example, got the idea for building a ‘flying machine’ from watching birds.”可知,莱特兄弟就从观鸟中得出建造“飞行器”的想法。故选D。
30.词义猜测题。根据“He was born with an endowment for musical composition.”以及“But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practiced for hours every day...”可知,除了莫扎特出生时就有音乐天赋之外,其他的因素对他的创造力也很重要,“endowment”的意思是“天赋”。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据“The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it!”可知,每个人都可以发明东西,A选项表述正确。故选A。
32.最佳标题。本文主要介绍发明是人人都可以做的并举例说明人们对发明的一些错误的认识和想法,所以D选项“成为发明家”是本文最佳标题。故选D。
C
In the 13th century, Marco Polo, the world known Italian traveler, saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century
Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1, 100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated from heat or cold with paper.
However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2, 800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48, 000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.
In short, we should keep a balance between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.
33.Why did Canada become an important country in paper making
A.Because it was a large country.
B.Because it had lots of forests.
C.Because it was a very rich country.
D.Because the inventor was from Canada.
34.In Finland, paper is used for________.
A.making bed B.reducing waste
C.making umbrellas D.keeping warm
35.According to the passage, how many trees are needed to make one ton of paper
A.10. B.17 C.2800 D.48000

What’s the most useful invention
There’re many useful inventions in the world. Almost all of them have changed our life and made our life much easier and better. Among them, I think the airplane is the most useful invention.
The Wright brothers invented the first successful airplane in 1903. Before this invention, people could only travel by ship, car or bus. It took them a long time to travel a long distance. With the invention of planes, people can now travel from one place to another in several hours or in even less time! It saves much time for people!

36.Paragraph 5 mainly talks about________.
A.how paper boots are made B.how paper was invented
C.how we can save paper D.how we can make useful things
