We always want to prepare ourselves to the changes we may face when we go to a different country. Well, I have to say that for me, even after living in the US for one year and a half, I am still not used to the changes of weather, or how to manage my money well. There are many things that can give us culture shocks(冲击), but we ourselves can make it a big shock or a small one.
I know that changing schools was a big thing for me. It helped me to be stronger and open towards meeting new people. Sometimes it feels like everybody is already in a group. This makes it harder for someone else to go in. But, it is not that hard. Actually many people know that you are from another country. Another thing that can be a shock to me is the sudden change of weather. During the last few days, there was an ice storm. It was the biggest one in 15 years in Missouri. It started accumulating so heavily that the school had to close down for two days, and it got worse when it started snowing after the ice storm.

This year, about one hundred teenagers from all over China will spend one year in American homes. They will attend schools and meet teenagers in the U.S., and have a new understanding of America. At the same time, about one hundred American teenagers will come to China to learn Chinese and get a new understanding of China.
A 15-year-old exchange student, Fred, spent last year in China with Li Hua’s family. In turn, Li Hua spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred knew little Chinese when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected — much harder. During my first two weeks at the University of California(UC) in Berkeley, I experienced a lot of things. Let me tell you some of them.
But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States. Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around, so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. However, it rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.
I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky things. Everything in Berkeley is so easy compared to Paris. For example, in only 24 hours I bought a mobile phone and found a flat to live in. What’s more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday, which is very convenient for me.
The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class. In France, students respect the teacher’s lesson, so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class.
The local people in California are very nice and open. However, the way of greeting in California is different from that in France. I shake(握手) my friends’ hands every day in France. During my second day at Berkeley, I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me “I think we already met!”
Another funny story happened during the first party I attended: A girl that I met before came to hug me. I thought she wanted to kiss me like we usually do in France to say hello. So I kissed her and she felt a little bit embarrassed(尴尬的).
I live a great experience at present, and I would just encourage any student to become a member in a program at UC, Berkeley.

During my first two weeks at the University of California(UC) in Berkeley, I experienced a lot of things. Let me tell you some of them.
But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States. Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around, so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. However, it rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.
