Unit 3 Animals are our friends
Lesson 17: Save the Tigers
I. Analysis of teaching material:
This unit is about animals. It aims to give students a greater understanding of why animals are important and instill the idea that animals should be treated with care and kindness. Students will learn about different animals in the wild and explore the dangers that are threatening the existence of certain species. They will explore ways in which they can help save our animals and develop a vocabulary that will help them express such ideas.
II.Analysis of students’ background:
The students are the eighth graders, they are interested in stories, more willing to express their own ideas, thinking more deeply.
III.Teaching objectives:
i. Knowledge objectives:
1.Enable the students to handle these target words: century, courage, brave, reason, kill, cut, balance, disappear, decrease
2.Help the students handle these key phrases: at the beginning of, drop to, in balance, in danger, cut down
3.Make sure most of the students master the key phrases: the number of , a number of ,several hundred, hundreds of
ii.Skill objectives:
Make sure most of the students are able to express their own ideas by using the phrases that are learned in this lesson.
iii.Moral objectives:
Help the students know the importance of helping keep all the living things in the world in balance. Lead them to care about animals.
IV.Teaching key points:
Let the students know the differences between “a number of “ & “ the number of” ,”基数词+ hundred” &” hundreds of”, and then make sure they can use these phrases correctly.
V.Teaching difficult points:
Have the students get the skill of how to do a reading comprehension by using a new method FISHBONE.

IX.Teaching procedure:
Step 1: Warming- up:
Give the students some English-riddles about the animals to arouse their interest in learning English. By the way ,lead in the topic word:animals.
Step 2: Lead-in:
Show the students some pictures or videos about animals killing to help them know what we are going to learn today. Let them know how serious the problem is!
Step 3: Presentation:
Show them the new words and teach the new words by using some interesting pictures or sentences:
century, courage, brave, balance, reason, disappear, kill, cut
Ask the students to read the lesson and match each paragraph with its main idea.

A. Tigers are in danger of going extinct.
B.“Save the Tigers” is a volunteer group that hopes to stop the tigers from disappearing.
C. Tigers are important to the environment.
After the students have done the exercise individually, the teacher should teach them how to do the reading comprehension by the new method FISHBONE.
Step 4: Practice:
After the scanning, the teacher should point out the two key points of this lesson: a number of & the number of , …hundred &hundreds of. Tell them the differences between the two, and give them enough exercises to help them handle these languages points.
After that, the students should be asked to read the lesson again and find some sentences to support the main ides of each paragraph. The students should be trained to master the skills of doing reading comprehension. Ask them only one “W” –Why
Help them find the reason or the sentences to support the main idea.
Step 5: Production:
When the students finish reading this passage, the teacher should review the method again, and give them another passage for the students to practice. Make sure they’ve handled the “5W+1H” method.
Step 6: Evaluation:
After they all have finished the reading comprehension, the teacher should ask them to talk about our main characters in our passages--animals. Ask them to discuss some ways we can do to protect animals. Lead in the theme: care about the animals, living in a peaceful environment, no buying, no selling, no killing.
Step 7: Homework:
Do the exercises that assigned by the teacher.
