I am a doctor, so I love my job. I always have, but I feel particularly proud to do it at the moment. With COVID-19 sweeping through Wuhan, people are avoiding hospitals as possible they can. However, pregnant women still need to come into the hospital. Babies still need to be born.
Right now, it is even scarier for these women, as they have to come in on their own, often feeling frightened. Their families are separated from them due to safety measures. We’ve always provided physical support, but now we are doing so on a different level — we also have to keep them company and offer emotional support. Unfortunately, some of the women have caught corona-virus, and being at the hospital puts me at risk. Personally, I feel protected because we have full personal protective equipment, which we wear all through our 13-hour shifts. You don’t know if someone is carrying corona-virus or not.
I didn’t want to put my family in danger by bringing the virus home and possibly passing it on to them. As a single parent to my children, Xiaohua, 12 years old, and Xiaoyong, 9, I realized I had to make a very tough decision about my family’s safety when the country went into lockdown. Giving up work wasn’t an option for me. I wanted to be able to look after the women who were feeling poorly and very scared, but I could not leave my little angels behind either.
At this point, my sister suggested that the children stay with her and her husband for the time being and leave me to my hospital duties. I thought it was a great idea, so we set a date for her to pick them up. When I explained the situation to my angels and told them they needed to stay with their aunt for a while, they both seemed upset, but agreed to go. On the day I saw them off, they kept looking back at me until they were too far to be seen.

After that, my workload increased because some of my coworkers fell ill. We had to work double shifts and my life was dedicated to nothing but work. Every day I came back home completely exhausted and fell asleep. As soon as I woke up, I needed to go to the hospital. I poured all my efforts into my patients, which was very rewarding. However, it troubled me that I didn’t have time for my own kids. Xiaoyong was going to celebrate his birthday soon. I had to do something to make up for him.
A week later, it came to Xiaoyong’s birthday. I made a video call to them from the hospital. I greeted them on the screen with my mask and goggles on, they recognized me at once, shouting excitedly. I took the phone to the hall where my coworkers sang “Happy Birthday, Xiaoyong!” They also encouraged him to be strong, and a grin appeared on his face. My children’s understanding and my coworker’s support gave me a warm feeling, and I believe nothing could ever truly separate me and my beloved ones. We are sure to win.

Homework

One weekend in August, Daniel and his father drove five hours to camp over night by a lake in the forest. On the way, unfortunately, his father received a phone call from Daniel's teacher saying Daniel had broken the school rules, and then he started to criticize (批评)Daniel. By the time they reached the lake, Daniel was so angry that he said to his father, "I'm going to find a better place for us to camp" and walked away alone.
With no path to follow. Daniel just walked on for quite a long time. After he had climbed to a high place, he turned around, hoping to see the lake. To his surprise, he saw nothing but forest and a snow capped mountain top. He suddenly realized that he was lost.
"Dad! Mom! Dad! Mom!. . . " he cried. "Help! Help me!. . . "
No reply. If only he had not left his mobile phone in that bag with his father. Daniel kept moving, but the farther he walked, the more confused he became. As night was beginning to fall. Daniel was so tired that he had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Daniel said to himself, ''Hadn't I walked away angrily, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place, facing with the danger of dying. '' He regretted( 后 悔 ) with endless anxiety, and then became asleep with shining tears in his eyes.
Daniel rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. He could hear water trickling (滴落)some where in the distance. Quickly he followed the sound to a stream. To his great joy. he saw some apple trees. He ate some. Never in his life had he tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Daniel began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead him to the lake.
