Dear Editor,
After I finish my homework, I often go online and chat with my friends. Sometimes I play computer games. But my parents don’t allow me to play computer games. Maybe they have heard too much news about how computer games harm children. Once I went to a net bar to play games after school. But after that I told my parents that I was playing basketball at school. I said so because I didn’t want to make them unhappy. I feel bad about it. However, I need to rest for a while by playing computer games after studying for a long time. I really want my parents to understand that. Do foreign parents do the same to their children Please help me.
Li Ping, Nantong
Dear Li Ping,
I think it's not strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad. Foreign parents will do the same as your parents do! They may not let their children watch TV for a long time, or like your parents, they don’t want their children to play computer games. Talk to your parents and be honest to them, I think. Tell them what you are doing and why you are doing so to make them understand you. It’s never good to do things behind your parents’ backs. They aren’t fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us. Remember: to be honest is the best way.
Good luck!
Rebecca

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center, China had 175 million users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 74 percent having their own smartphones. “This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebra and even the brain,” reported the World Health Organization.
On Feb 19, 2021, the Ministry of Education released(公布)a notice that asked all local primary and middle schools to include rules about smartphone usage at school management. Many schools have take rules to limit(限制)students’ phone use at school.
Zhou Dandan, an English teacher at Beijing No. 20 High School, noticed that many students were crazy with their phones. Some even played games on them in classes. Zhou said that most students lack(缺乏)self-management. Spending too much time on the phone will distract(分心)them and prevent them from learning, she added.
Liu Yanping, headmaster of First Branch of Beijing National Day School, thought every coin has two sides. So, it was unwise to take a “one size fits all approach”. You can’t simply cut students off from the Internet in the digital world,” Liu said.
Chen Xue, a parent from Wenzhou, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it was more important to improve kid’s ability to self-management and developed good habits of phone usage.
Xu He, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, supports the policy. “In fact, my school has never can’t allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said. “It is a distraction from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves let alone kids like us.” However, the l4-year-old Ge Ziqi who uses a bike-sharing app every day to go between her home and school said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bike.”

“Have you finished your lesson, George ” said Mr. Prentice to his son, who had laid aside his book and was busy making a large paper kite.
“No, father, ”replied George, hanging down his head.
“Why not, my son ”
“Because it is so difficult, father. I am sure that I shall never learn it. Besides, I could not remember it after I had learned it, my memory is so bad.”
“If I were to promise you a holiday on the thirtieth of the month after next, do you think you would forget the date ”
“No, I am pretty sure that I should not.”
“You are first-rate at skating, and flying a kite, and playing at ball and marbles, are you not ”
“Yes, father.”
“And yet you cannot learn your lesson! My dear boy, you are deceiving(欺骗) yourself. You can learn as well as anyone, if you will only try.”
“But have I not tried, father ” again urged George.
“Well, try again. Come, for this afternoon lay aside that kite you are making, and give another effort to get your lesson ready. Be in earnest, and you will soon learn it. To show you that it only requires perseverance,_ I will tell you a story:—
“One of the dullest boys at a village school, more than thirty years ago, went up to repeat his lesson one morning; and, as usual, did not know it. ‘Go to your seat!’ ”said the teacher angrily.
“If you don’t pay more attention to your lessons, you will never be fit for anything.”
“The poor boy stole off to his seat, and bent his eyes again upon his lesson.”
“It is of no use; I cannot learn.” he said in a whisper to a companion who sat near him.
“You must try hard, ”replied the kind-hearted boy.
“I have tried, but it is of no use; I may just as well give up at once.”
“Try again, Henry!” Whispered his companion, in an earnest and encouraging tone.
“These two little words gave him a fresh impulse, and he bent his mind again to his task.”
Gradually he began to find the sentences lingering in his memory; and soon, to his surprise and pleasure, the whole lesson was mastered!
“From that day, ” continued Mr. Prentice, “there was no boy in the school who learned more rapidly than Henry. From that day till the present hour he has been a student; and he now urges his son George to ‘try again’ as he tried. ”
“And was it indeed you, father ” asked his son, eagerly looking up into the face of his kind parent.
“Yes, my child. That dull boy was your own father in his early years.”
“Then I will try again.” said George, in a decided tone; and, flinging aside his half-made kite, he turned and re-entered the house, and was soon bending in earnest attention over his lesson.
“Well, what success, George ” asked Mr. Prentice, as the family gathered around the tea-table.
“I learned the lesson, father!” replied the boy, “I can say every word of it.”
“Did you find it hard work ”
“Not so very hard, after I had once made up my mind that I would learn it. Indeed I never stopped to think, as I usually do, but went right on until I had mastered every sentence.”
“May you never forget this lesson, my son!” said Mr. Prentice, “You now get the secret of success. It lies in never stopping to think about a task being difficult or tiresome, but in going steadily on, with a fixed determination to succeed.”

Nowadays students have to spend a lot of time studying. They are always asked to do much homework after school. 41 Here is some advice to help you finish your homework faster.
You’d better not work when you’re very hungry. 42 Always do your homework before you get tired. Don’t wait until very late in the evening, or the homework will seem much harder than it really is. It may take you a lot more time and energy to finish it.
Break your time into manageable(易处理的) period. If you have more than an hour’s work, give yourself a break after an hour. 43 You should be able to work at least an hour at a time without stopping.
44 If you put off doing your homework, you will always think of it, and you won’t enjoy your free time so much. If you put it off until the end of the week or until right before a test, you will have too much work to do for the exam.
A little bit each night, enough to keep up with what is happening each day in school, will take the fear out of tests and keep you on top of it all. 45 This will help you make it a habit. It will make it easier to do, and it will make free time more enjoyable as well.
A. If you decide to do your homework right after school, you may have a snack before getting to work.B. Do your homework at the same time every day.C. Some students even do their homework late at night and don’t get enough sleep.D. On the other hand, don’t break it up so often that you can’t get anything done.E.
