“If I catch that boy, …” she murmured to herself.
She opened the door and looked out into the garden.
“Tom!” she shouted.
Then she heard some noise behind her. She turned round just in time to catch the boy as he came out of a cupboard.
“And what have you been doing there?”
“Nothing” said the boy.
“Nothing! Look at your hands and your mouth! What is that stuff?”

“Well, I know. It's a jam. I've told you forty times that if you touched that jam,I'd skin you. Give me that stick(棍).”

“Why do I live Why do I wish for anything, or do anything Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death ” Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.
In 1850s. Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith ( 信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their
families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them do their home—lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy engine and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the engine. Father looked it over and promised to do it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away— on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys. “
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. “We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We’ve got to play at being poor for a bit.”
Peter said joyously, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.” Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
“Oh, Mother,” she whispered, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that! “
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

Read a lot, I mean a lot! You have to increase your ability for reading. Many students are in the habit of reading only when their exams are approaching while some others read only what they are taught or things that must be read because it is in their curriculum. But listen to me now, I am telling you from my own experience that it is a very bad habit and it is not enough to improve your intelligence.
You have to learn and get ready to become versatile in your reading. The fact that you are studying medicine in school does not mean that you should not know one or two things on politics.
Many people have complained to me that they find it hard to read stuffs like novels but I just shake my head in pity for them because it is obvious they have failed to realize the truth in that wise saying by Margaret Fuller that “today a READER, tomorrow a LEADER!”
When you read, you get to “see” so many places and it will be as if you have visited those places in real life. This is because reading will improve your imagination and creativity and understanding. You also get experience from learning about how people dealt with their various problems thereby saving you from going through the pains and difficulties they must have gone through!
Reading will also help you in improving your vocabulary because you will certainly start coming across so many new words which you will try as much as possible to get accustomed to with the help of the dictionary! The good thing about increasing your vocabulary is that it will also improve your thinking ability.
After all, we think in words and the more words you know, the easier it will become for you to express yourself or your thoughts. And when you read, make sure you read so wide because the more you read, the more you know and the more you know the more intelligent you can become.
36 According to the author, what should students do in terms of reading
A. They needn’t read unless the exams come.
B. They should read books about intelligence.
C. They must read about politics when their major is medicine.
D. They should read as wide as possible.
37. The underlined word “versatile” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. interested B. many-sided C. content D. confident
38. Which is NOT the advantage of reading
A. Enlarge our vocabulary B. Improve our reading
C. Travel with money D. Get experience from others
39. What is the benefit of knowing more words
A. You will get used to referring to the dictionary when meeting with new words.
B. You will have less difficulty expressing your opinions.
C. Vocabulary will improve your creativity.
D. You can pass your exams with ease.
40. What is the best title for the passage
A. Increase your ability for reading B. Read wide and improve your vocabulary
C. Reading improves your intelligence D. Reading makes you a leader tomorrow

范文
The middle school days provide me with enough time to read some fantastic stories. Among them the most
unforgettable one is The Cop and the Anthem. It was written by O Henry, a celebrated American writer.
The main characters of the story include Soapy, a cop and a waiter. It tells a story about a homeless boy called
Soapy. He develops a lot of actions in order to let the police put him into prison. He fails many times and has to give up. Finally, he decides to be a good boy. Unfortunately, he is caught by the policeman although he does nothing. I like it because it is full of interesting things. The humorous writing style tells us the society in a special way. I laughed and at the same time I felt very sorry about Soapy.
