The most valuable gift
The most valuable gift I have ever received is the book The Old and the Sea from my mother.
I received it on my 13th birthday. I was so surprised to get it. I was so happy, too. I just failed to pass the exam some days ago and I felt really upset those days. My mother wanted to encourage me to be strong and not to give up. I finished reading the book the next day. I learnt a lot from the book and I understood my mother's love to me. From then on, I never give up. I keep trying my best. So I consider it the most valuable gift.

My parents seldom encouraged me to ask for help, so I trained myself to become as independent as possible. I thought if I asked for help, I would be a problem to other people.
I walked into the supermarket near my house, not buying anything. I just wanted to stay there quietly. The pain of losing my husband was still too great. And this supermarket held so many sweet memories.
He often came with me, and almost every time he'd pretend to go off and look for something special. He always bought me yellow roses. He knew I loved roses.
Now, standing by the meat, I searched for the perfect small steak because my husband used to love steak. Suddenly a woman came up beside me. I watched as she picked up a large pack of T-bone steaks, dropped them in her basket, hesitated(犹豫不决), and then put them back.

“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was pulled down then.”
