Dear Daddy and Mommy,
I'm very happy to have been in China studying Chinese for two weeks. During these two weeks, I have experienced some different customs and cultures from those in our own country. Last Saturday evening, Wei Hua invited me to her house for dinner. As soon as supper was ready, Wei Hua's mother gave me a pair of chopsticks. But I didn't know how to use them. In Canada we use forks and knives, so her mother had to find a pair of fork and knife specially. While eating, Mrs Wei put as much food as much as possible in my bowl, and always ate it up. I could see they were very surprised but pleased, so I explained to them that eating something up at dinner is polite and it shows that you like the food. When I began to feel full, they still served me some more food, in fact, I didn't want to eat anymore but had to. At that time I felt very confused, so I asked them why they didn't stop serving me food. Wei Hua smiled and said that it is polite to serve guests as much as they can in China and it means that hosts are friendly. I told her in Canada people just encourage gusts to help themselves some food and don't serve them anything. You see, so many mistakes I have made in China! But please don't worry, the friends have never minded them, for I am a foreigner after all. How different and confusing customs are between different cultures!
Yours,
Jenny
