Mom was cooking in the kitchen. She could hear the girls arguing in the living room. It was the third time this week that the sisters had been arguing over nothing. A few minutes later, Maria rushed into her bedroom angrily and closed the door heavily.
“Come to the kitchen, young lady,” Mom firmly (坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone (语气) of voice.
Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”
Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”
While Felicia was on her way, Mom put two chairs opposite each other but very close together.
“Maria, you sit here and Felicia you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes,” Mom ordered.
At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mom said firmly, “You must stay staring at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact (眼神交流) means another minute sitting in the chairs. ” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and look at each other.
Felicia looked at Maria’s pouting (噘嘴的) face while Maria looked at Felicia’s angry face. They each thought the other one looked ridiculous (可笑的). In fact, they were being ridiculous to fight and be mad at each other over nothing.

Beauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive (有魅力的) to others.
A few bad nights is enough to make a person look "especially" more ugly, their sleep experiments show.
The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their sleep experiment. They were asked to get a good night's sleep for two nights.
A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row.
The researchers took make-up free (素颜) photos of the volunteers after both the good and the bad sleep.
Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge (评价) them on attractiveness, health, and sleepiness, as well as asking them: "How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture "
The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score was low.
The strangers also said they wouldn't want to socialize with the tired students. The researchers say this is natural for people. An unhealthy-looking face makes people run away. In other words, people don't want to hang around with people who might be ill.
Dr. Brewer, an expert at the University of Liverpool said "Judgement of attractiveness is often unconscious (无意识的), hut we all do it, and we are able to judge on even something small like whether someone looks tired or unhealthy. This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us."

To be honest, I didn't want them to be punished. So I did as my brothers told me to do.

Anger(愤怒)often makes us uncomfortable. Seeing your child's anger can be especially uncomfortable. In order to relieve(缓解)this feeling, parents often encourage children to “stop crying” and say things like “It's nothing to cry about.” It's moments like those that plant the seeds of unhealthy anger, The “stop crying” parents are just doing what they were taught by their own parents, who were probably taught that by their parents on and on. However, we should learn how to create healthy anger in our kids.
If a child never sees his or her parents express anger, he or she should never express anger, either. But if parents always express their anger loudly, their child may start to think of anger as something that is always frightening.
The first thing you can do to create healthy anger in your children is to practice creating healthy anger in yourself. Once you're better at experiencing anger and expressing it in a healthy way, you'll be able to set a good example for your kids.
Stopping kids from expressing their feelings is wrong. You may feel bad when you believe you are wrong, When children express their feelings and are told that it's nothing to cry about, they come to know that they themselves are bad.
We need to raise them in an environment where it's safe to express feelings. Once you feel more comfortable with your own anger, you can teach your children why anger is a helpful feeling. When your kids express anger, help them examine what it is that has made them angry. Why did it make them angry How did it do that Then, you can teach them that those feelings are never wrong and our expressions of feelings are in our control.
Anger is natural and normal, and it can be experienced and expressed in a healthy way.
36. Why do parents say “It's nothing to cry about” to their children
A. To encourage them to stop crying. B. To make them uncomfortable.
C. To relieve their anger. D. To plant the seeds of unhealthy anger.
37. From the second paragraph we can infer(推断)___________.
A. parents have a great influence on their children B. parents should get angry with their children
C. expressing anger loudly is right, not wrong D. children should express their anger like their parents
38. Parents should set a good example for children by ___________.
A. stopping them from expressing their anger B. expressing their own anger in a healthy way
C. letting them know they are right or wrong D. raising them in a safe environment
39. The writer thinks that anger is a kind of feeling that is always ___________.
A. wrong B. uncomfortable C. harmful D. helpful
40. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Anger often makes us and our children uncomfortable.
B. Parents should create healthy anger in themselves.
C. Parents should create healthy anger in their kids.
D. Parents should never express their anger.

Eight years ago, 1-week-old Diandian was left behind. When people found her in the reeds (芦苇) of a lake, she looked too weak to survive. Now she is the mother of three milu, thanks to the workers’ attention and care at the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve.
Li is the president of a milu conservation association in Yueyang and head of a local milu and bird rescue center, where 11 deer, including Diandian, have their families. Li and his workmates need to work extra hours to take care of the animals from March until mid-May. He remembers March 18 this year. He fed Diandian some fresh shoots and leaves for breakfast as usual, and moments later when he returned, a newborn milu was right beside her. Since it is her third baby and born in the third month of the year, people named it Sansan, referring to “three-three”. Li has developed a deep affection for milu and made up his mind to protect them. “As our country is paying more attention to environmental and wildlife protection, people are increasingly aware that milu are state-protected animals,” Li said.
Milu habitats (栖息地) are usually centered around water, and fishing equipment that used to be a threat to the animals is no longer seen in nature reserves. On May 27, a team of experts went to watch milu near Dongting Lake. It takes time and luck to meet one and count them especially when they live in the thick reeds that are 4 to 5 meters tall. The team leader Song, saw a milu for the first time when he was studying for his doctorate in zoology early in 2009. Since then, he has helped protect the habitats at Dongting Lake. As the flood season is coming, Song and his workmates will go around the lake area day and night to save deer in trouble, and provide feed for the animals when needed.
As the environment improves in and around Dongting Lake, China’s second-largest freshwater lake, the wetland has become cover once again for wildlife. “We will continue to protect these rare animals and their living environment,” Song said.
1. How was Diandian when she was found in the reeds eight years ago
2. Why do people call Diandian’s new baby Sansan
3. Why does Li think more people realize milu are state-protected animals
4. When did Song start to devote himself to protecting the habitats at Dongting Lake
5. What can you learn from Li, Song and Their workmates (请自拟一句话作答)
第四节:书面表达(共1小题,满分15分)

【答案】Staying at Home Alone Was Not Difficult for Me
When I was ten, both of my parents went to another town to look after my sick grandfather, and I was all by myself for 24 hours.
At first, I was a little afraid because I had never been home alone before. But soon I forgot about it because I threw myself into an interesting book. I spent the whole morning reading it. At noon, I took the food out of the fridge and heated it. Mum cooked a lot of food before she left. In order to prove that I could take care of myself,I washed my clothes in the afternoon.
