Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠)elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants' main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants' living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP)was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎)and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty one
elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

Bullying can happen to anyone. A great many children around the world are bullies every year. But there are things that can be done.
What is bullying
Bullying is when someone makes you feel bad or hurts you again and again.Bullying can happen at school, out of school and online. Bullying includes:
calling people mean (恶意的)names
laughing at people
telling lies about people
taking someone's things without permission (允许)
not letting someone play in a group
hitting people
What is cyberbullying
Cyberbullying includes:
sending bad messages online
sharing photos online without permission
not letting someone be part of an online group
spreading lies online
If someone is not kind to you, tell an adult that you know and like.
For example, talk to a parent or a teacher.
If you get bad messages, don't reply.
You should save them and give them to your teacher, your family, or the police. Ask an adult for help. Don't share something before you make sure it is true. That will help stop the cyberbullying.
Talk to your parents or teacher or an adult if you see bullying or if you are worried about a friend.
Say sorry if you are not kind to someone. You can write a message or talk to the person. And always remember: think about how to be kind in the future.

There's much to see under the sea,but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.
Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What's more,in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact,it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the
wavelengths(波长)of light that are reflected (反射)from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red
light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!
( )6.You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because ________.

Since the outbreak of COVID 19, in some cities, Meituan has become almost 5 times as busy as usual. During the special period, the delivery drivers (外卖骑手) are busier and more tired than before.
Gao Zhixiao from Beijing, 32, a delivery driver, has continued working as the virus spread across China. Ever since the COVID 19 outbreak erupted in China, he has to take a
health test each morning and spend about 20 minutes disinfecting (消毒) his motorcycle and clothes to avoid spreading germs during his route.
“After I gave her medicine, I stayed to talk to her,” he says. “Because I am also from a single parent family, I understand what it means to an old. She said that she hadn't eaten yet, because it was difficult to find food during the epidemic. So I made her instant noodles and two poached eggs, then took the trash out when I left.”
Li Fengjie is another delivery driver in Wuhan, who was born in 1996. He felt nervous when he heard the news about COVID 19. He took things a few steps further. As a Meituan rider in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province where the COVID 19 epidemic first erupted in late December, he knew that his services would be essential (必备) after the city of 11 million was locked down on Jan 23. Li walked 50 kilometers to get to work after all public transport was stopped.
“All the doctors and nurses are coming to Wuhan to help, so we, the riders, should also fight with them on the front line,” he says.
The great news is that Li Jie, who is a common delivery rider in Beijing, attended the meeting about COVID 19 prevention on March 9th, 2020. You'd probably look it up in a dictionary if you come across an English word or phrase you don't know. This, however, was not the case. Although English has a history of over 2,500 years, the first English dictionary didn't appear until the 17th century.
During the 16th century,Europe saw rich developments in science, medicine and arts. People had to “invent” words to
express new ideas. Many new English words were borrowed from foreign languages. There was also a renewed interest in ancient languages.
The general public, however, had difficulty understanding these new words. Robert Cawdrey, an English school teacher, wanted to help. In 1604, he published A Table Alphabetical in London. Cawdrey hoped his dictionary would be able to help more people learn to read and write properly.
But Cawdrey's dictionary was not very dependable. The first edition had only 120 pages. There were only 2,543 words in it. As Cawdrey's focus was on words “hard for the general public”,many common words were not included. And for many words, the explanations were unclear. Take “loaf” as an example. It said, “A piece of bread.” While in today's dictionary, it reads, “A shaped mass of baked bread that is usually sliced before eating.” For some words, Cawdrey gave
only one word explanation to each of them. This made A Table Alphabetical more like a book of synonyms (同义词) than a real dictionary.
Although Cawdrey's dictionary had many problems, it was quite popular. As the saying goes, “________.” In the year of 1604, people finally had something to help them read more easily!
