Text 1
W: Hello, Bob. Jack and I will hold our wedding party next Sunday. We’d like you to come.
M: Congratulations. I’d like to go very much, but I’ll have an exam on Monday and an essay due on Wednesday.
Text 2
W: There is a limit of three books each person, but you took four books.
M: Thank you for telling me this. I’ll drop this one and be certain to return the other three on time.
Text 3
W: Dr. Smith, this is Linda. Those stretching exercises you recommended are really helping with my back pain. But the pills you prescribed, I think, they are giving me a headache.
M: That’s not unusual. Let’s try cutting back to just one a day, all right
Text 4
M: I see that your roommate Donna is editor of the newspaper this year.
W: Editor, yes, but I’ve hardly seen her since the beginning of the term. She might as well move her bed over to the newspaper office.
Text 5
W: This is a pretty small room to be sharing with someone. Don’t you find it a little crowded
M: Well, I’m used to being a little crowded. I grew up with six brothers, remember
Text 6
M: Hello, Catherine. Have you been to the new sports center yet
W: Not yet, George. Where is it
M: On Mango Street, you know, near the 118 bus stop.
W: I see. Is it good
M: You can do lots of sports. I played badminton last Friday and watched the table tennis match there, too.
W: What about swimming
M: There is a great swimming pool there, too. Do you want to go with me next week
W: Sure. Any day except Thursday.
M: Well, why don’t we go on Wednesday There is a discount that day.
W: OK. Let’s meet after school.
Text 7
W: It’s a lovely day out today, isn’t it
M: It’s beautiful. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s supposed to snow early tomorrow morning and then tomorrow afternoon there’s a chance of freezing rain.
W: That doesn’t sound pretty. Do you have any plans for tomorrow
M: Well, I am going to see some friends in the morning and go to the movies in the afternoon. What about you
W: I just have to go to class tomorrow afternoon.
Text 8
W: Hello, I’d like some information about your trip to Hawaii.
M: Yes, of course. What kind of information can I provide for you
W: Well, how do we travel
M: We’ll fly since it is fast and efficient. When we get there, we will have a special coach for you, so you needn’t pay extra to rent a car.
W: How many people are there in a group
M: 30 people.
W: So many. Is there any smaller group I had hoped I could enjoy the beautiful scenery and relax completely instead of waiting for other people to get together.
M: Yes. There is a smaller group of 10 people, but the fee is a bit higher.
W: OK. The only thing I care about is whether I can have a comfortable and relaxing vacation. Next, where shall we depart
M: We’ll leave from London, and return to London.
Text 9
W: Today’s guest is Martin Middleton. He has given us hours of interest and entertainment over the years, with his weekly series of wildlife programs. Martin, you’ve been to the four corners of the Earth in search of material. Where did this love of adventure come from
M: Well, I read about the East as a child and was fascinated by it. Then, when I was about 12, I met someone who’d been to Singapore, and to me that seemed incredible. Of course, when I started in television, back in the early 1960s, you didn’t travel to make a wildlife program — you went along and filmed at the local zoo. So, when I said I’d like to go and film in Africa, the Head of Programs just laughed at me.
W: And, did you go to Africa
M: On that occasion, no! But I eventually got them to allow me to go to Borneo in 1962. There was just me and a cameraman. We went off for four months, filming wherever we saw something interesting. Nowadays, of course, it’s all quite different.
W: Different In what way
M: We do months of preparation before we set off, so when we start filming, we know exactly what scenes we want to get. I mean, you don’t get up in the morning and say to your team, “What shall we do this morning ” You have to know exactly what each scene is going to show — to work to a strict plan.
Text 10
M: South Korea has the most effective education system in the world’s richest countries, with Japan in second place and the USA and Germany near the bottom, a United Nations study said on Tuesday. The ranking provides the comparison of the relative effectiveness of education systems across the developed world.
The study is based not on testing how many students reach what level of education, but on testing what pupils actually know and what they are able to do, including their abilities in reading, math and science.
Germany, despite its strong education tradition, occupies 19th place out of the 24 nations, just behind the United States in 18th place.
An American government official said, “Our schools are simply not good enough and they don’t compare well with systems in other countries.”
“It is clear that educational disadvantage is born not at school but in the home,” said the report. “Learning begins at birth and is encouraged by a loving, stimulating (激励人的) environment.”

A
Germany may be famous for its wealth of history and culture, but it also houses some of Europe’s most wild and wonderful landscapes.
Jasmund National Park
It lies on the west coast of the offshore island of Rügen. This UNESCO-protected site is the smallest of Germany’s national parks. It is here that painter Caspar David Friedrich found himself inspired to create one of his masterpieces, Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, in 1818. Here long trails can take you all the way to the Rügen coastline, where white-sand beaches and blue waters wait.
Berchtesgaden National Park
Berchtesgaden is one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful conservation areas. Trails go in and out of the forest, leading you along the banks of glassy lakes. The more adventurous visitors may choose paragliding (滑翔伞运动) from Mount Jenner and they can fly over 1,800 meters. Back on the ground, a network of more than 150 miles of walking trails twist through the forest.
Southern Black Forest Nature Park
The highland areas, with views over Switzerland and France, are a good place for food-lovers. Activities in the park range from hiking and fishing to mountain biking, while the slower travelers will enjoy the trails for an escape from everyday life.
The Bliesgau Biosphere
This place is home to almost half of all German orchid (兰花) species. The grasslands spread for miles, drawing in different butterflies. Thanks to its comfortable climate, this is a region of sustainable (可持续的) development. In fact, this park is an example of farming done right and offers a wealth of agricultural know-how to anyone eager to learn.

A. It has many different flowers.
B. It covers the smallest area.
C. It is good for travelers to fish.
D. It offers beautiful grasslands.

Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of kilometers that make up the complete Appalachian Trail. Harvey, or “little man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
The Appalachian Trail, which many people call simply the “AT”, is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and passes through 14 states in all. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is tough, and only one out of every four hikers completes all the sections of the trail. The people who hike it must carry everything they need with them, including tents, sleeping bags and other supplies, along with food and water.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes. It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tents and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers. Karl Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. Mr. Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey has now turned 5 and has started kindergarten. But at some point in the future, he says, “I want to hike the AT again!”
4. What can we learn about hiking on the AT
A. It takes every hiker 7 months to finish it.
B. Hikers like to celebrate their birthday on it.
C. Only a quarter of hikers finish the whole trail.
D. Hikers spend lots of money hiking on it.
5. What made the Suttons’ hiking successful
A. Using their imagination. B. Being full of energy.
C. Managing time well. D. Having good preparation.
6. What kind of person is Harvey Sutton
A. Energetic and team-spirited.
B. Imaginative and funny.
C. Naughty and tough.
D. Considerate and brave.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The AT — A Challenging Trail
B. Why Do People Like Hiking
C. Hiking — Suttons’ Hobby
D. The Little Man’s 209 Hiking Days
C
The National Gallery has always given pride of place to Peter Paul Rubens’s Samson and Delilah, listing it among the “highlights” of its collection, since it purchased the picture at Christie’s in 1980 for a then record price.
Critics (评论家) have long suggested that the painting is not really by Rubens. And now a series of scientific tests employing groundbreaking AI technology have concluded that the 17th-century Flemish painter could never have painted it.
“The results are quite astonishing,” Dr. Carina Popovici, the scientist who carried out the study, told the Observer. “The algorithm (算法) has returned a 91% probability for the artwork not being authentic.” The AI technology analyses different features of an artist’s work, including brushstroke patterns. Popovici said that everything that’s not by the hand of the assumed artist will come out with a negative probability and that the technology can produce accurate results even for artists who greatly changed their style across their careers as every artist has a unique brushstroke.
The AI analysis was carried out by Art Recognition, a Swiss company based near Zurich of which Popovici is a co-founder. It has analyzed 400 works with this technology, and has an ongoing collaboration (合作) with Tilburg University in Holland.
Critics have long argued that it is only a copy of a Rubens original that is known to have been painted between 1608 and 1609 for his Antwerp sponsor Nicolaas Rockox which then vanished after his death in 1640. Then it was not until in 1929 when it appeared again.
The significance of this new AI method of authentication is potentially groundbreaking. Short of human subjectivity, emotion and commercial interests, the software is coldly objective and scientifically accurate. Many questionable works were given the credit to Rubens at the beginning of the 20th century. There is today a clear need for more reliable methods of judgment.
8. Why does the National Gallery pay much attention to Samson and Delilah
A. It is one of Rubens’s works.
B. It can give off unique light.
C. It receives much criticism.
D. It is thought of great value.
9. What can be inferred about the artists
A. They are not satisfied with the AI technology.
B. They wish their artworks to be valued.
C. They have unchangeable painting habits.
D. They can create some artworks beyond times.
10. What does the underlined word “vanished” mean in paragraph 5
A. Broke. B. Arrived. C. Disappeared. D. Adjusted.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The AI technology has many advantages.
B. The AI technology is short of human subjectivity.
C. The AI technology will judge many questionable works.
D. The AI technology is the most reliable method of judgement.
D
Despite earning more than $100,000 in household income, many people feel that they are living month to month and that a loss of employment or sudden medical emergency could easily move them from the upper middle class to low income earners. This feeling of being on the “edge” of poverty, despite these levels of income, seems a bit ridiculous but it really comes down to easy credit, misunderstanding of their incomes and peer (同辈) group pressures.
Even in today’s tough economy, for those with six-figure incomes credit is easy to come by. Credit companies may have cut back offerings to those in lower income brackets (等级) due to the recent credit reforms, but there seems to be little or no effect on high income earners. Their being able to get credit without difficulty gives them a false sense of security that makes them spend way more than their incomes can afford. That’s why they accumulate credit card debt faster than average.
Many higher income earners feel like they are making lots of money now, and believe that they will continue to make big money. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now. Hand in hand with that, many of them probably believe that they are making more money than they really are — or said another way, the money they make will go farther than it really does.
Meanwhile, many young professionals who are earning good incomes don’t come from particularly privileged backgrounds, and their reference point may be that they are making twice (or more) than their parents were — so they spend like that as well. They don’t take account of the effect of inflation (通货膨胀), which means that the cost of living is much higher than that in their parents’ generation. Further, the more you earn, the more you pay in tax. Rather than focusing on after-tax incomes, many high income earners only look at the top line figures. A $100,000 income before tax is only about $70,000 after tax.
12. Who is the text centered on
A. The upper middle class. B. The lower income group.
C. People living in poverty. D. People getting into debt.
13. What causes some people to spend beyond their income according to the text
A. Lack of real budget. B. Easy availability of credit.
C. The good economic climate. D. Their privileged backgrounds.
14. What does the author intend to remind young professionals about in the end
A. They should focus on their top line figures.
B. They need to look ahead rather than look back.
C. They actually don’t earn as much as they think.
D. They should form good personal financial habits.
15. Which of the following might be discussed in the next paragraph
A. Effects of peer group pressures.
B. Ways to keep financial stability.
C. Harm of poor money management.
D. Tips on reducing the risk of poverty.
If you’re a book lover who can’t help but get lost in a story, you’re probably constantly looking for ways to have your friends and family join in the reading fun! 16
Know your own reading preferences. Since you are more likely to be persuasive in recommending something you enjoy, it helps to know your own reading preferences. It’s also helpful to write down some book reviews and your feelings about the books you read. 17
Ask them what they last read. 18 Once you get a sense of the kinds of books they like, you’ll be better prepared to make an appropriate recommendation.
Encourage them to read a book about their city. If they recently moved to a new city, give them a book that relates to it. It could be a book about the unique art and architecture of the city. 19 For example, if they just moved to New York City, you could give them the novel Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote.
20 If they are passionate about their career or have just decided to change careers, they may enjoy a title related to their vocation. Search for a book that relates to their career.
Remember: The best recommendations are well tailored to them.
A. Take inspiration from their occupation.

I went fishing on the sea with my grandfather when I was 12. We came back with fruitful results but when we were sailing home we hit a rock. Our boat sank and my grandpa guided me to swim to a reef (礁) nearby. There was a seagull (海鸥) but it just stepped back a little and didn’t fly away when it saw us.
The reef was not far away from the shore. Grandpa planned to swim back alone and then came to help me. But he abandoned the thought because we saw two sharks swimming back and forth. It was probably the fish in our boat that drew them here. We saw a house near the shore so we screamed to seek help. But we caught no attention of anybody.
Two days later, we were hungry but we got nothing to eat. My grandpa managed to catch a crab. He divided it into two halves and gave one half to me. It was raw and difficult to eat. But we had no choice. When there was just one leg of the crab left I gave it to the seagull. The seagull approached near gradually.
My grandpa looked at the seagull carefully and then he told me, “No wonder it didn’t fly away. Its left wing was dislocated (脱臼). I think I can catch it for our food. At least we won’t be starved to death soon.” I paid attention to its wings and Grandpa was right. There was a swell on its left wing which should be its bone. It was pitiful, I thought.
At that moment, my grandpa caught it in a flash. When Grandpa was about to twist the seagull’s neck I stopped him. I asked my grandpa whether he could cure the seagull. He felt confused. But a few moments later he figured out what I was thinking about. He handed the seagull to me excitedly and pulled out some wet money and a pencil from his pocket. Then he spread them on a flat stone. When they were dry enough, he wrote something on each note.

Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.”可推知,Harvey精力充沛;根据第五段第一句“Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together.” 故选A。

根据第一段“The National Gallery has always given pride of place to Peter Paul Rubens’s Samson and Delilah, listing it among the ‘highlights’ of its collection, since it purchased the picture at Christie’s in 1980 for a then record price.”
根据第三段最后一句中的“the technology can produce accurate results even for artists who greatly changed their style across their careers as every artist has a unique brushstroke”可知,即使是那些在职业生涯中风格发生了巨大变化的艺术家,他们的画也能通过这项技术得到准确的结果,因为每位艺术家都有自己独特的笔触。

根据第一段中的“but it really comes down to easy credit, misunderstanding of their incomes and peer group pressures”可知,作者提出,中上阶层担心自己濒临贫困线的原因有三个:容易获得的信贷、对收入的错误理解以及同辈压力。 故选A。

Paragraph 1:
Grandpa tore down some cloth from his shirt and tied the notes to its leg. Then he took the seagull away from my arms and felt its left wing with his fingers. With a slight pull, he fixed the seagull. The seagull screamed and flew above us for a moment and then it flew away. We prayed that someone would see the money on its leg and came to rescue us. But nothing happened until the third day. We were about to give up when we heard the sound of ship engines. We looked around and saw a ship sailing to us. We were saved!
Paragraph 2:
The crew gave us some food and water and told us the story. A sailor working in this ship happened to see the seagull and the money. He wasted no time and told the captain all these. They immediately set off and came to our rescue. After hearing the story, we expressed our thanks. But the captain said, “It’s you yourselves that saved your lives.” Looking at each other, my grandpa and I laughed happily.
