21. A。 由Newspaper round before school部分中的Papers must be delivered before 8 a. m. and you must have your own bike可知,报纸递送员必须有自己的自行车。
22. C。 Do you speak another language We need French, Spanish or German speakers可知,该兼职工作内容与语言相关,再由其联系方式可得出正确答案。
It's a bit harder than middle school, but that is to be expected from every ongoing year可知,他认为尽管高中比初中要难一些,但这些挑战是意料之中的事。
25. B。 The school is fighting against student fear by providing information about high school, even before they enter ... This was done to help the freshmen by solving any doubts they could have可知,学校要求九年级新生提前入校是为了给他们答疑解惑,帮助他们应对高中生活的不适感。
26. D。 They do well because they come in with a good attitude and wish to adapt well可知,Garcia对新生适应高中生活的表现比较满意。
Because the city's water mains had suffered more than 300 breaks, no water was available to fight the fires可知,取水困难使得火势不好控制。
29. B。 About 250,000 people (two-thirds of the city's population) were left homeless. They were forced to live in tents in public parks可知,地震之后,大部分当地居民无家可归,只能寻求避难之处。
30. B。 Caruso was so shocked by the earthquake that he made up his mind never to return to San Francisco again可知,经历过这次地震的Enrico Caruso感到非常恐惧。
31. C。 Describing his broken nose, which was never repaired和Ansel Adams开玩笑所说的话My beauty was damaged forever可知,他在地震中容貌受损。
32. B。 Happy with my sporadic babysitting work, I told my mother that, no matter what job I got, I'd never be able to cover college costs on a high school worker's pay可知,作者跟妈妈说明,无论在高中阶段找了什么工作,都没办法挣够上大学的费用,因此可推断,作者不愿意找工作。
33. D。 由第四段中的and there were times I hated jumping in the pool on cold mornings and trying to talk kids into following my instructions可知,作者介绍了这份工作中令他不满意的地方,而and前的分句(即划线词所在分句)与该分句在意义上保持一致,因此可推断,划线词所在分句中作者想表达的意思是:关于这份工作,并不是所有方面都令人愉快。
34. B。 I was also able to use my work experience to stand out from other job applicants in college and get a paid research job as a freshman in college可知,上大学应聘岗位时,作者凭借高中时期的兼职经历在诸多应聘者中脱颖而出。
36.根据空前“Having an unclear goal can make it difficult to follow through on your efforts and track your progress.” D. However, having a clear goal will help you stay driven“然而,有一个明确的目标会帮助你保持动力”符合语境,故选D。
37.根据空前“It is wise to decide in advance how you will measure progress. You can choose both short-term and long-term measures of progress. In the short-term, you might measure progress by looking at how much studying you get done in a week.” F选项中In the long-term对应上文中long-term。F. In the long-term, you might watch how your grades improve over the semester“从长远来看,你可能会看到你的成绩在这学期是如何提高的”符合语境,故选F。
38.根据空前“When you set your goal, make sure you have a clear action plan and detailed steps.”当你设定目标时,确保你有一个清晰的行动计划和详细的步骤;以及空后“Action-based steps might include finishing your homework ahead of time, reviewing your notes every day after class, and arranging a meeting with your professor.” E. That way you'll know what you're achieving and how you'll get there“这样你就会知道自己在实现什么以及如何实现”符合语境,故选E。
39.根据本段小标题“Make sure your goal is realistic”确保你的目标现实;以及空后“An example of a realistic goal would be to improve your course grade by one letter before the end of the semester. An unrealistic goal, by comparison, would be to turn an F into an A by the end of the semester.” G. It's important to dream big, but it's also important to know what you can achieve“有远大的梦想很重要,但认识到你能不能实现目标也很重要”符合语境,故选G。
40.根据空后“If you're working within a school calendar, the end of that semester might be the end of your time schedule. You might decide that you'll achieve your goal before the final week. That means working backwards to figure out what needs to be completed and when.” B. Give yourself a reasonable time schedule“给自己一个合理的时间表”符合语境,故选B。
41. B。本句中的it指代上文中的speaking English to yourself,再由上文中的a silly idea、In fact和下文介绍自言自语的好处可知,本空所在句与上句形成对比关系。
42. A。43. D。本段是把speaking to yourself与speaking with another person进行比较,说明自言自语说英语的好处。 free ... of ...
44. D。 故get used to(习惯于)符合语境。
49. A。由上文中的asking you questions so that you can answer them可知,用英语回答对方提出的问题,是一种练习用英语思考的极好方法。
50. B。下文中的using a mirror to make short 2-3 minute impromptu speeches是一种完善自言自语“技巧(skill)”的方法。
Perfect your talkingto-yourself ... by using a mirror to make short 2-3 minute impromptu speeches可知,这种练习方法是有用的。故选helpful。

建议信
Dear Mike,
I'm glad to hear from you. As your close friend, I'd like to talk about the harm of Internet addition to you as I feel worried to know that you have wasted lots of valuable time playing the Internet games.
As we all know, the Internet is a convenient tool to improve our knowledge and skills. However, our life will be greatly affected if we are addicted to it. For example, your grades may go down and your health will be going from bad to worse. To make things worse, it can also damage the relationship with your family. So I think it is high time that you got rid of the bad habit. It is a good idea for you to read some meaningful books and do some physical exercise.
I'm looking forward to hearing your good news soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Since graduating from middle school, this year's new 9th-grade class is adapting to ( 适应) the challenges of high school, a difficult process ( 过程) for many students. Some of the challenges the students must get used to are the increasing difficulty of schoolwork, the amount of homework, and the change in the grading system amongst other things.
“It's a bit harder than middle school, but that is to be expected from every ongoing year,” David Palacios, 9th-grade student, said.
Adaptation is also influenced by stories the freshmen hear before entering. These stories create a negative (消极的) idea of high school, as they are usually bad stories about classes, teachers, or other topics.
“Stories I've heard of high school are exaggerated ( 夸张的),” Palacios said.
The school is fighting against student fear by providing information about high school, even before they enter. This year, the 9th-grade class entered school on August 8, one day earlier than other high school students. This was done to help the freshmen by solving any doubts they could have.
“In general, they adapt well, because since middle school they have been given some information on what high school is,” Ana Isabel Garcia, high school advisor, said.
The changes faced in 9th grade are more challenging than those found in middle school. However, after experiencing the first two months of 9th grade, many 9th graders agree that 9th grade is not as hard as they thought it would be.
“It's not that different from middle school,” Palacios said.
High school is harder than other grades as it's the final step students take before they enter the real world. Students must see the important role high school plays as it teaches them many skills that will help them improve their future.
“They do well because they come in with a good attitude ( 态度) and wish to adapt well,” Garcia said.
24. What did Palacios think of the freshman challenges
A. They would disappear soon.
B. They were hard to fight off.
C. They happened as expected.
D. They mostly focused on grades.
25. Why did Palacios' school require the 9th graders to enter the school on August 8
A. To show them around the campus.
B. To help them deal with their nervousness.
C. To let them experience high school life in advance.
D. To avoid them hearing bad stories about high school.
26. What kind of feeling did Garcia express in her words
A. Shock. B. Worry. C. Excitement. D. Satisfaction.
27. Where is this text most likely from
A. A news report. B. A study guide.
C. A personal diary. D. A class schedule.

At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, people living in San Francisco were awakened by a 40-second earthquake. After a 10-second stop, an even stronger earthquake struck, lasting 25 seconds. Survivors saw the ground move in waves as high as three feet. The earthquake damaged streets, and streetcar rails.
Fires broke out soon after the earthquake, caused primarily by overturned stoves (炉子) or damaged electrical wiring. Because the city’s water mains had suffered more than 300 breaks, no water was available (可用的) to fight the fires, which rapidly burned beyond control. To control the fire, firefighters began to dynamite ( 炸毁) buildings in its path. Unfortunately, this method sometimes spread the fire. By the evening of April 18, 1, 700 soldiers had arrived in San Francisco to help both local people and the firefighters.
After burning uncontrolled for three days, the fire finally burned itself out by the morning of April 21. More than 28, 000 buildings had been destroyed, resulting in about $500 million in damage.
Although the official number of deaths was 311, it is now believed that about 3, 000 people were killed. About 250, 000 people (two-thirds of the city’s population) were left homeless. They were forced to live in tents (帐篷) in public parks.
Among the earthquake’s survivors was the famous Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso. On the night of April 17, he had performed (表演) the role of José in Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, “Carmen,” and had been scheduled for another performance on April 18. Caruso was so shocked by the earthquake that he made up his mind never to return to San Francisco again.
Ansel Adams, age 4, survived the earthquake along with his family, though their house and many things were damaged. An aftershock threw young Adams face-first into a garden wall, giving him what his friend Cedric Wright would call an “earthquake nose.” Describing his broken nose, which was never repaired, Adams would later joke, “My beauty was damaged forever.” But he felt the power of the quake, which he called his “closest experience with terrible human suffering.”
28. What made it difficult to control the fire

D. The low number of firefighters.

As today's high schoolers are facing too much homework, sports teams and clubs and high-rising college costs, many people are rethinking the idea of high schoolers working. Are there still benefits (益处) of having a job in high school The answer is yes.
When I was 14 years old, my mother suggested that I get a job in order to pay for college. Happy with my sporadic (零星的) babysitting work, I told my mother that, no matter what job I got, I'd never be able to cover college costs on a high school worker's pay.
My mother smiled and told me that there were plenty of other reasons why I should get a job beyond (除了) just the paycheck ( 工资支票). So I found myself applying for and finally accepting a job as a swim instructor and lifeguard at my town's public pool. I ended up working part-time at the pool through all four years of high school.
Not everything about the job was marvelous, and there were times I hated jumping in the pool on cold mornings and trying to talk kids into following my instructions, but overall, like my mother said, I got many benefits from the job beyond just the paycheck.
At my job, I made lots of new friends, more than I had made in high school. I also learnt lots of skills including CPR (心肺复苏法) training and office experience. I was also able to use my work experience to stand out from other job applicants in college and get a paid research job as a freshman in college.
For many high school students, there are many benefits of having a job. Not only will high school jobs give you a way to make some money, meet new people, and develop some skills, you can also use your teenage jobs to get yourself a better job in college.
32. What was the author's attitude when his mother asked him to get a job
A. He was surprised at it.
B. He didn't want to do it.
C. He was excited about it.
D. He wasn't interested in it.
33. What does the underlined word “marvelous” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Easy. B. Moving. C. Relaxing. D. Enjoyable.
34. How did the author's part-time job benefit him
A. It developed his team spirit.
B. It helped him land a good job in college.
C. It led him to meet the best friend of his life.
D. It provided him with enough money to pay for college.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. More than just a paycheck
B. My first job in high school
C. What I learnt from part-time jobs
D. High schoolers are having hard times

The importance of reading is obvious. If you're not a big fan of books, that's OK! You're not alone! But before you shut down books and reading all together, take time to learn more about the importance of reading and all the amazing benefits that come with it.
Reading can help improve your vocabulary. It increases exposure with new words and makes it easier for words to stay. Saying new wards out loud helps you better recall them and pick them up, making these new words part of your own active vocabulary.
Reading allows for creative thinking. If you were an explorer, you would learn about the world through direct experience. Sadly, you can't all take to the high road and disappear into the sunset. But you can discover new worlds through reading books. Reading a book uses the imagination and this develops your creativity, which allows you to dream and think in ways that you would have never been able to before.
Reading brings joy and happiness to your life. You don't read because you have to. You read because you have fun doing it, a reminder that books are meant to be enjoyed. Reading brings you joyous experience, whether you are opening a new book or rereading an old favorite. It's easy to get lost in a world with interesting characters, tense situations, and beautiful settings.
It's safe to say that reading can change your life for the better. If you think that you hate reading books, then perhaps you just have yet to find the type for your own personal style—but keep trying, and keep searching for what's right for you. Reading is one of the most powerful things in the world, offering you new chances to learn, grow and be inspired!
