一、阅读理解
A
The USA is a land of immigrants. Between 1815 and 1914, the world saw the great peaceful migration in its history: 35 million people, mostly Europeans, left their homelands to start new lives in America. Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families
First, one major cause of the departure among European peasants was the rise in population which in turn led to hunger. Another was politics. Many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason. Following the failure of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s, hundreds of thousands decided to make a new start in America. Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short, people chose to leave their homes for social, economic and religious reasons. As a result, by 1890 among a total population of 63 million, there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions First of all, there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe. Next, factories were calling for labour, and pay and conditions were much better than back home. Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads, and settlers were needed to populate new towns and develop commerce. There was the space for religious communities to practice their faith in peace.
As we know, there were losers. To start with, there were those unwilling immigrants, the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour. Nor should we forget the equally awful fate of the American Indians. By 1860 there were 27 million free whites, four million slaves and only 488,000 free blacks.
Nowadays, the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. As always, it remains an attractive place to the ambitious and the energetic who are ready to commit themselves to the land that gives them a second chance.
( )1.What is not given as a reason for emigration in the passage
A.The search for religious freedom.B.The search for adventure.
C.Avoidance of military service.D.Economics.
( )2.The lives of 19th-Century European peasants were difficult because _______.

C.the population had gone downD.there were too many of them
( )3.Which of the following can best summarize the whole passage
A.The USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.
B.The USA is a land of immigrants.
C.Religion encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
D.About one-eighth of non-native born Americans live in the USA in 1890.

If you want to walk in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest figures, then go to Oxford. Many of Oxford's 38 colleges are open to the public all year round. Here are a few of the colleges worth visiting and some famous people who have studied there:
Christ Church College
Long before it became known as a location for the Harry Potter films, Christ Church was the college where Albert Einstein, author Charles Dodgson who wrote Alice in Wonderland, and 13 British prime ministers studied. In the largest and one of the most popular colleges, you'll want to see the paintings in the 16th-century Great Hall, historic Christ Church Cathedral—England's smallest cathedral, and listen to Great Tom, the seven-ton tower bell.
Magdalen College
Many consider Magdalen to be one of the most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. This is where author Oscar Wilde read "Greats" (a classics course) in the 1870s, and where actor, comedian and pianist Dudley Moore earned a scholarship to study music. See the medieval(中世纪的) church with its 15th-century tower. Opposite the college is the beautiful Botanic Garden—Britain's oldest—founded in 1621.
Merton College
Founded in 1264, Merton has the oldest medieval library in use. J. R. R. Tolkien is said to have spent many hours here writing The Lord of the Rings. One of the college's treasures is an astrolabe(星盘), thought to have belonged to Chaucer. The college has "the most amazing" collection of medieval coloured glass in Oxford.
Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford, is the largest university library in the UK. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size only to the British Library. It holds more than 9 million printed items on 189 km of shelving and seats up to 2,500 readers.
