Today about 70 countries use Daylight Saving Time(DST). Daylight Saving was first introduced during World War I in Australia. During the world wars, DST was used for the late summers beginning January 1917 and1942, and the full summers beginning September 1942 and 1943.
In 1967, Tasmania experienced a drought(干旱). The State Government introduced one hour of daylight saving that summer as a way of saving power and water. Tasmanians liked the idea of daylight saving and the Tasmanian Government has declared daylight saving each summer since 1968. Persuaded by the Tasmanian Government, all states except two passed a law in 1971, for a test use of daylight saving. In 1972, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria joined Tasmania for regular daylight saving, but Queensland did not do so until 1989.
Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia have had irregular plans, often changing their dates due to politics or festivals(节日). For example, in 1992, Tasmania extended(延长) daylight saving by an extra month while South Australia began extending daylight saving by two weeks for the Adelaide Festival. Special daylight saving plans were made during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
The differences in daylight saving in Australia continue to cause serious problems in transport and many other social activities. It also reduces the number of hours in the working day that are common to all centers in the country. In particular, time differences along the east coast cause major difficulties, especially for the broadcasters of national radio and television.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals.
During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.
The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish Line in front of the cheering people.
Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles. Some even ride upside down —— their legs and feet straight up in the air —— all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher—Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn't play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.
Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother's perfume(香水).
Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.”After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.
Mrs. Thomspon paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy's mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.
Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M.D.(医学博士).

This Friday is Tomb-sweeping Day, one of the three traditional festivals that are included as the Chinese mainland's public holidays starting this year. Together with the Dragon Boat Festival in June and Mid-Autumn Festival in September, the authorities say observing these days is aimed at protecting folk culture and customs.
Chinese nationwide should thank Chen Jing, a 68-year-old folk artist and professor from Nanjing University for the move. “It is certainly a favorable gesture for the promotion and preservation of folk culture and customs,” Chen said. In 2006, Chen proposed to the authorities to make Tomb-Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, a public holiday. His suggestion received wide support from other folk artists. “Tomb-Sweeping Day means a lot to the Chinese,” Chen said. It is a day for people to honour their ancestors.
Two years ago, on his trip to honour his ancestor in Taizhou, Jiangsu province, he found the train full of people, most of whom were the elderly. From the conversation with them, he found the elderly thought it necessary to include young family members in the festival's activities, while working people also wanted the chance to honor their ancestors. Among those he spoke to was an elderly man from Hongkong, who told Chen Tomb-Sweeping Day is a holiday in Hongkong for paying tribute to ancestors. Chen was inspired by the experience and insight from these people and put forward the suggestion for the holiday during an interview by mainstream media.

Young adult filmmakers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young filmmakers who aren't in film school yet and aren't, strictly speaking, even adults?
They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Film Festival, tomorrow, in a setting any director might envy: Lincoln Center. Complete with“red carpet”interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced moviemakers, except for the age of the participants: about 8 to 18.
“What's really exciting is that it's film for kids by kids,”said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts, a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington, Virginia.“We want to make this a national event,”Ms. Gardner added.
The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B. King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005. “A lot of the material is really mature,”Ms. Gardoner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project, a media arts and leadership-training group. “The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of secondhand smoke. Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants'(移民)feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country.”
The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and a full-length film whose title is Pressures.

The First Day in the Summer Holiday
It was the first day of the summer holiday, but Dingding wasn't happy. In the morning, his mother woke him up early and wanted to take him to a make-up school. At almost the same time, his father came in, telling him to sign up for an English training course. Dingding was a football fan and was crazy for cartoon films, yet neither of his parents would like him to develop his own interest. What they only care about seems to be his study.
It's not only Dingding who has to face such a holiday. Nowadays, children in China are burdened with so much homework and so many training courses that they can hardly enjoy their holidays. It's time that parents “returned” holidays to their children.

Sweet potatoes are fat-free, high in fiber and full of the vitamins that research suggests reduce your risk of life-shortening diseases. To stay healthy,we must eat more fruits and vegetables, and sweet potatoes are a great source of beta carotene (胡萝卜素) and other carotenoids. According to a study of the diets of almost 90 000 nurses, eating about one cup a day of fruits and vegetables rich in carotenoids (which the body turns into vitamin A) can cut your risk of stroke in half and reduce your risk of heart disease by 22 percent. Other research suggests beta carotene protects against breast, lung and stomach cancers.
Beta carotene is the most famous member of the carotenoids family. In fact,a medium sized sweet potato contains nearly 12 mg of beta carotene (anti-aging experts usually suggest 6 to 11 mg per day). Sweet potatoes are also a low-fat source of vitamin E. Research has linked high E diets with a lower risk of heart disease. This vitamin pill in an orange jacket also packs a vitamin C punch-it has more C than apricots (a kind of fruit). Research suggests that vitamin C protects against ailments ranging from cataracts (an eye disease) to cancer. In addition, a UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) study linked high vitamin C diets with a longer life. Recent studies have showed that antioxidant vitamins C, E and beta carotene fight a fierce battle against free radicals (自由基), which cause cell (细胞) damage and lead to various illnesses. Therefore, to keep fit, eat more sweet potatoes.

A new study shows that fat people in the United States suffer direct economic and social effects because of their size. The findings are from an 8-year study of about 100,000 people. The people who were studied were between the age of 18 and 24 when the research began.

The fat women also were 20% less likely to get married and they earned an average of about $6,700 a year less than other women. The study showed less severe effects on fat men. We all have to eat, but choosing the right foods can be hard. Many people also have trouble controlling how much they eat.
Instead of eating a reasonable quantity of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy foods, lots of people eat too many hamburgers, cookies and chips. Many people just eat too much food in general.
One result is the spread of obesity,_which has enlarged the waistlines of millions of adults and kids. The increase in obesity has led to an increase in the number of people with diabetes(糖尿病), heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
But for many other people, food has become their enemy. They worry so much about getting fat that they either severely limit what they eat or make themselves throw up right after eating. Doctors say that these people have eating disorders.
Eating disorders among teens are far less common than obesity, yet the health problems of eating disorders can be just as serious as obesity.
Not eating enough can lead to heart attacks, weak bones, organ damage and fainting spells. Repeatedly throwing up causes chemical imbalances in the body, makes your teeth weak and destroys stomach lining (胃粘膜).
Researchers are doing research on what causes certain people to develop eating disorders, why some people are more in danger than others, and what kind of education programs work best to prevent people from doing dangerous things to lose weight to stay slim.

If your friend and family get fat, chances are you will, too. Researchers report in a new study that suggests obesity is “socially contagious(传染性的)” and can spread easily from person to person.
The large, federally funded study found that to be true even if your loved ones lived far away. Social ties seemed to play a surprisingly strong role, even more than genes are known to do.
“We were stunned(震惊的) to find that friends who are hundreds of miles away have just as much impact on a person's weight status as friends who are right next door.” Said co-author James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego.
The study found a person's chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend did, 40 percent if a sibling(兄弟姐妹) did and 37 percent if a spouse(配偶) did.
Researchers think it's more than just people with similar eating and exercise habits hanging out together. Instead, it may be that having relatives and friends who become obese changes one's idea of what is an acceptable weight.
Despite their findings, the researchers said people should not sever(切断) their friendships. “There is a ton of research that suggest that having more friends makes you healthier,” Fowler said.“ So_the_last_thing_that_you_want_to_do_is_get_rid_of_any_of_your_friends.”
The study was published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine and funded by the National Institute on Aging.
Obesity is a global public health problem. About 1.5 billion adults worldwide are overweight, including more than 400 million who are obese. Two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese.
Much of the recent research focus has been on the intense hunt for obesity genes involved in appetite or calorie burning. Treatment has been mainly centered on helping individuals curb(抑制) their weight through better diet and fitness. The findings could open a new avenue for treating this worldwide epidemic. The researchers said it might be helpful to treat obese people in groups instead of just the individual.

Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain, his pen name.
Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter. But with his mother's tender care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he caused much trouble for his parents. He used to play jokes on all of his friends and neighbours. He didn't like to go to school, and he constantly ran away from home. He always went in the direction of the nearby Mississippi. He was nearly drowned nine times.
After his father's death in 1847, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him with food and clothing. Then, he worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot and later joined the army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short stories. Afterwards he became a full-time writer.
In 1870, Mark Twain got married. In the years that followed he wrote many books including Tom Sawyer in 1876, and Huckleberry Finn in 1884, which made him famous, and brought him a great fortune.
Unfortunately, Mark Twain got into debts in bad investments(投资)and he had to write large numbers of stories to pay these debts. In 1904, his wife died, and then three of their children passed away.

What do literary greats Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Burns have in common? They both lived and wrote in Edinburgh, along with many other big names in the field of literature. This fact helped UNESCO(联合国教科文组织)award the city the title of world's first City of Literature on October 14.
Edinburgh left a lasting impression on Arthur Conan Doyle(1859—1930). Although he was born there he went to school in England but returned home for medical school. After graduating he moved to London and began writing his Sherlock Holmes stories. His inspiration for the character came from one of his professors at university. Holmes' methods were so clever that they actually furthered the advance of the study of criminology(犯罪学).
Robert Burns(1759—1796)is still regarded as Scotland's national poet, more than 200 years after his death. He is celebrated all over the world through translations of his work and the annual Burns Night supper on his birthday. One of his songs, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose ranks among the finest love songs ever written and Auld Lang Syne(《友谊地久天长》)is sung all around the world.
As one of the first literate societies in Europe, the Scottish Parliament passed the world's first compulsory(义务的)education law in 1496. By the 1790s, almost all Scots could read. Visitors to Scotland often observed that even the lowest members of society had copies of Burns' poems and other books.

Mark, a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You've got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn't got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering “what if”. I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow_land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children's book was published. Since then, he has written forty-five books that have sold more than one hundred million copies around the world.
Doctor Strong's books are known for their easy use of words and colorful, hand-drawn pictures. These drawings bring life to his imaginary creatures. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and hundreds of others.
The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show. It included about three hundred Doctor Strong's original drawings and some of his writings.
Most of Doctor Strong's books, although written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in Mc Elligot's Pool, he describes the danger of pollution. He discusses the arms race in The Butter Battle Book, written in nineteen eighty-four.

There were times when it was only schoolchildren who felt sick before they got their grades. But now teachers in Germany are scared, too, as they are being graded by their students.
Many teachers are opposed to it. They don't mind being evaluated. But they are upset because the results are then being posted on the Internet and accessible to millions of Internet users. On the website www.spickmich.de during the past four months students have posted evaluations of 100,000 teachers.
The teachers are graded on categories such as “motivated”, “good instruction,” “easy examinations”, or even “sexy.” Many teachers think that their privacy has been violated.
The creators of the website say that the students are only being offered the chance to provide teachers with some feedback about their classroom instruction. Bernd Dicks, who founded the website with three friends, says that the students are largely quite satisfied with their teachers. On a grading scale of one to six, the teachers' average grade is 2.7 and it has been improving lately. He often says the impression is that students are bullying(欺负) their teachers. But there is also bullying of the students by teachers.
“Teachers must also learn to live with criticism,” he added. But still, the website is not totally immune from manipulation(操纵), as one teacher near the northern city of Hanover recently proved. He registered himself on the website as a student and then rated his own teaching colleagues highly. Within a few days, seven of his colleagues were listed in the top 10 rankings of Germany's best teachers.

Health is the most important for any of us. In order to stay healthy, we need some common knowledge.
Firstly, pay attention to the diet. We should eat lots of fruit and vegetables, because they are rich in fiber and low in fat. As a proverb says, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” So fruit is good for health. Don't have a lot of food that contains too much fat, such as butter. Meanwhile, sweets should be eaten in proper quantity, because too much sugar does harm to us. Don't drink too much coffee, either.
Secondly, exercise is necessary. Regular exercise can help us keep from getting fat. People who do running every day usually have stronger hearts than who don't.
Finally, form good living habits. We should sleep for about 8 hours at night, and never work too hard. Over work and little sleep will lead to illness. What's more, stay away from cigarettes.
These are the things we should pay attention to so as to stay healthy.

The journey to the moon has been the first step towards future exploration in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Traveling to the planets will be man's next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.
Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed(确认)nor ruled out, Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus(金星)is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense(稠)and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth's atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on earth, but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.
41.According to the passage, traveling to the planets will be________.
A.much easier and even more interesting
B.far more excting and dangerous
C.man's final aim
D.man's first step

Damage to Ozone Layer Gets Worse
In the middle of winter, when snow is falling in many parts of the United States. Scientists have founded the sun this summer. The warning: The sun's summer time rays are more dangerous than once thought.
A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone(臭氧层)in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet(紫外的)radiation, will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.
Scientists first became concerned about the ozone layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctic during the winter. The hole was caused by chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.
Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data(数据)from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctic. Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.
Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone-destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban(禁止)of the chemicals.
46.The scientists have observed the ozone layer________.
A.since 1980
B.since last winter
C.for more than 20 years
D.for about one year
47.The ozone layer in the atmosphere can________.
A.do a lot of good to human beings in many ways
B.protect humans from diseases caused by bad weather
C.do a lot of harm to human beings in the summer time
D.protect humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation
根据文章第二段第一句:... which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation,...(臭氧层)保护人类免受有害的紫外线的辐射……
48.Scientists first found that there was a hole in the ozone layer________.
A.above Arctic during the winter in the mid-1980s
B.above Antarctic during the winter in the mid-1980s
C.over somewhere in the north of the equator in 1980s
D.over somewhere in the summer time in the mid-1980s
49.The damage to the ozone layer was caused by________.
A.the changeable weather
B.ozone-destroying chemicals
C.chemicals from refrigerators
D.chemicals from air conditioners
50.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.The use of ozone-destroying chemicals have already been stopped.
B.The ozone levels in the spring and summer over the USA were low.
C.More and more people have begun to protect the natural surroundings.
D.Many countries have already taken measures to protect ozone layer.
D
Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星) but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth. Light gets through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment endurable. Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.
Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”. Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage—a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed (畸形的) children or even grandchildren. Missions of the Apollo flights have had to cross belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo crew accumulated a large amount of rems. So far, no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.
51.According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is essential to man in that________.
A.it protects him against the harmful rays from space
B.it provides sufficient light for plant growth
C.the heat is necessary for human survival
D.it screens the falling meteors
根据文章第一段的第二句及第四句“The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth...Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radition from the sun are screened off.”,我们可以看出大气层对地球能起到保护作用,它挡住了大量的太阳辐射使人体免受辐射伤害,故选项A为正确答案。
52.We know from the passage that________.
A.even tiny amounts of radiation is fatal
B.the effect of exposure to radiation is slow in coming
C.radiation is avoidable in space exploration
D.astronauts in spacesuits needn't worry about radiation damage
文章第二段的第四句“The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage—a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed children or even grandchilclren.”
53.The harm radiation had done to the Apollo crew grandchildren members________.
A.is insignificant
B.seems overestimated
C.is enormous
D.remains unknown
54.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.the Apollo mission was very successful
B.protection from space radiation is no easy job
C.astronauts will have deformed children or grandchildren
D.radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers
55.The best title for this passage would be________.
A.The Atmosphere and Our Environment
B.Research on Radiation
C.Effects of Space Radiation
D.Importance of Protection Against Radiation

The United Nations says forty million people or so around the world went hungry in 2008, mainly because of higher food prices. Early estimates from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show that 963 million people did not get enough to eat.World food prices have dropped since early 2008. Prices of major crops have decreased by more than half from their height earlier last year. But they remain high compared to earlier years.
But FAO official Hafez Ghanem says lower prices have failed to end the food crisis (危机) in many poor countries. “For millions in developing countries,” he says, “getting enough food every day to live an active and healthy life is a distant dream.”
The FAO says food shortage is a threat to people's health. Today, two-thirds of the world's undernourished people live in just a few countries. These are India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Ethiopia and so on.
A report on food insecurity warns that the current economic crisis could send even more people into hunger and poverty.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the percentage of the people who continually go hungry fell from 34% in 1997 to 30% in 2008. But the FAO says Ghana is the only country that has reached two sets of hunger reduction targets. These were set by the 1996 World Food Summit and the Millennium Development Goals. The main reason is the growth in agricultural production in Ghana.
The FAO says some countries in Southeast Asia like Thailand and Vietnam have made progress in hunger reduction goals. But South Asia and Central Asia haven't, and North Korea is still in hot water.
41.What FAO official Hafez Ghanem says implies(暗示)________.
A.it's easy but takes long to provide people with enough food
B.enough food can make people more active and healthier
C.there is difficulty solving the food shortage in a short time
D.people in developing countries will never get enough food
由文章的第三段可得出答案:“For millions in developing countries,” he says, “getting enough food every day to live an active and healthy life is a distant dream.”。
42.Ghana has reached the targets of hunger reduction mainly because of________.
A.the still high food prices
B.the donation of developed countries
C.the two targets of hunger reduction
D.the growth in agricultural production
43.The underlined word“undernourished”in Para. 4 probably means“________”.
A.hungry and unhappy
B.unhealthy for lack of food
C.not fat because of poverty
D.undeveloped and poor
从前面一句“The FAO says food shortage is a threat to people's health.”
44. Which country has not made progress in hunger reduction?
A.North Korea. B.Thailand.
C.Vietnam. D.Ghana.
45. What is the best title of this passage?
A.The food production of the world
B.The hunger reduction target of the FAO
C.The food shortage around the world
D.The solution to the global food shortage

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.
With so many loopholes(漏洞)in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.
In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?
46.While taking a taxi in Finland,________.
A.a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride
B.a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver
C.a passenger can never be turned down by the taxi driver wherever he wants to go
D.a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration(证明)before they leave without paying
由第二段第三句话“You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare.”可知。
47.We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland____.
A.are mostly poorly managed
B.provide meals for any diners
C.provide free wine and charge for food
D.provide meal for only those who live in the hotels
由第三段第一句话“The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners.”
48.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.
B.The workers are always honest with their working hours.
C.The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.
D.The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.
由第四段第二句话“They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate.”
49.The word “those” in Paragraph 5 probably means________.
A.people who often take taxis
B.people who are dishonest
C.people who are worthy of trust
D.people who often have meals in big hotels
该词后的定语从句“who love to take ‘petty advantages’.”
50.It can be learned that________.
A.all the Finns are rich
B.Finland has been a good place for cheats
C.the Finnish society is of very high moral level(道德水平)
D
Toronto is a big and beautiful city, which has developed from a relative unknown place over the past half century to the center of culture, trade and communication in Canada.
With its colorful ethnic(种族的)mix, rich history and breathtaking buildings,Toronto offers non-stop adventures to the tourists. To get a sense of how big, various and magical Toronto is,the best place to start is the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing(无支撑物的)building in the world. From this point, visitors can get a bird's-eye view of the city's amazing scenery and unique geography.
In addition to being an important center of culture, trade and communication in Canada,Toronto is also a major multi-ethnic city. It has a population of over 4. 5maillion and its citizens come from countries around the world and from all manner of ethnic backgrounds. Every day,in most places of the city,a hundred different languages can be heard on the streets, from Hindi to Greek to French. This, perhaps, explains why former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau once said that Canada_is_really_more_mosaic(马赛克,镶嵌图案)_of_cultures_and_languages_than_a_melting_pot.
Street signs in Toronto are mostly in English. Weekly and daily newspapers are published in various languages, and the city hosts successful international film festival each September. It is also home to a popular baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto has something for everyone.
51.The author wrote this passage to________.
A.tell us how Toronto develops from the past
B.introduce some famous sights of Toronto
C.draw more tourists to Toronto
D.introduce something about Canada
52.What can we know from the passage?
A.Toronto is in the center of Canada.
B.From the top of the CN. Tower we can see the whole Toronto.
C.The street signs in Toronto are all written in English.
D.Toronto is a city with a history of half a century.
所以A项和D项都不对;由最后一段第一句话“street signs in Toronto are mostly in English.”
53.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Toronto hosts baseball games every year.
B.Newspapers in Canada aren't published only in English.
C.We can see people of every colour in Toronto.
D.Toronto hosts an international film festival every year.
由最后一段倒数第二句话“It is also home to a popular baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays.”
54.The underlined sentence means different cultures and languages in Canada________.
A.have developed a lot
B.can be easily seen by foreigners
C.have been well mixed together
D.still keep their own characteristics
所在句用了more...than...
55.How does the author like Toronto?
A.The city is worth visiting.
B.It's just a common city in Canada
C.There are too many foreigners in the city.
D.There aren't many places of interest to visit.

Yuhe village has a population of 1,700. There is not enough farmland for so many people. So about half of the villagers, most of whom are healthy men and women, are now away from home in cities and other places to make money. Those living at home are either children or old people, or even the sick and the disabled.
We learned that people in this village are living a better life than before. But on the other hand, there are some problems : children are not so well taught when living with their grandparents. Besides, old people are unable to take good care of themselves and their properties. Special attention has to be paid to the current life of the villagers.

In many English homes four meals are served; they are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. These are the meals that are served in the homes of people who are well to do.
Breakfast may be served any time for seven to nine. It consists of porridge, bacon and eggs(boiled or fried), butter toast or bread-and-butter with marmalade(酸果酱). Instead of bacon and eggs, fish may be served. Either tea or coffee is drunk at breakfast.
Lunch comes at about one o'clock. It generally consists of cold meat (left over from yesterday's dinner), potatoes, and salad. After that there is bread or biscuits and cheese. Most people drink water at lunchtime; some drink beer or wine. It is not the custom to drink the spirits(烈性酒)like whisky or brandy even wealthy homes in the middle of the day.
Afternoon tea, taken between four and five, is the most informal meal of the day. If you are a friend of the family you may drop in for tea without an invitation or telling them that you are coming. Each person has a cup and saucer, a spoon and a small plate for bread-and-butter and cake. By the way, do not help yourself to cake first; bread-and-butter first, and then cake if there is any. Another piece of advice: do not put more than one piece of bread or cake on your plate at the same time.
Dinner is the most substantial(丰盛的)meal of the day and is a very formal meal. Many people even wear special clothes for dinner, so if you are asked out of dinner you must find out whether you are expected to wear a dinner suit; for you would feel very embarrassed if, when you go there, you were the only person in ordinary clothes. Dinner is generally served at about half past seven. All the members of the family sit down together and are on their best behavior. The head of the family sits at one end of the table; his wife sits at the other. If there is a guest, he generally sits in the place of honor, which is at the right of lady of the house. If there are several guests the most important is asked to sit there. During the meal conservation is carried on, you should try to get into the conversation with the person on your right or left, but you should not try to talk to someone who is a long way from you.
