Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey (调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest; most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal (理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime Watch TV.
"More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities (机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone," says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.
1.What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on
A.American kids' sleeping habits.
B.Teenagers' sleep-related diseases.
C.Activities to prevent sleeplessness.
D.Learning problems and lack of sleep.
2.How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day
A.7 hours. B.8 hours. C.10 hours. D.18 hours.
3.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon
A.They are affected by certain body chemicals.
B.They tend to do things that excite them.
C.They follow their parents' examples.
D.They don't need to go to school early.

Many Americans spend more time in cars these days than in the kitchen. But as lives grow busier一and waistlines grow larger —a number of health experts are calling for Americans to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases by cooking at home more and eating out less.
“When dining out, people are likely to gravitate towards all the wrong things,” says Rachel Brandeis of the American Dietetic Association. “People take in 50% more fat and sodium when they eat out than when they cook at home. And they often miss out on fruits, vegetables and other vitamin-rich 'powerhouse foods' that may reduce the risk of cancer.”
Nutritionists know it’s not easy to break old habits. Many people say they hardly have time to exercise, let alone fix dinner.
Brandeis says her secret is organization. She cooks six nights a week, even though she and her husband both work. She spends 20 minutes thinking about a week s worth of menus and writing a list. She shops just once a week. Brandeis says she chooses easy cooking methods, too, since she is not quite good at cooking.
The American Institute for Cancer Research has produced a guide filled with tips like Homemade Health”. Melanie Polk, the institute’s director of nutrition education, says cooking at home has many advantages. It teaches children about nutrition as well as the importance of sharing housework.
The 39-year-old homemaker Kirstin Kristinus of Washington, DC, says cooking.at home brings her family together. She also tries to reduce her family,s cancer risk by preparing every meal with many different kinds of food.
“The only way to know that you are getting all the good things is to expose yourself to a wide variety of food,” says Steven Shiff,a doctor in New Jersey. “If you eat out at a restaurant,it's a lot easier to choose unhealthful things."
“However, families don’t have to give up restaurants,” Shiff says. “It is possible to eat healthfully if you eat outside the home. But it takes probably the same sort of planning that you would have to do to prepare meals at home."
1.What is worrying health experts
A.Americans are having a too busy life.
B.Americans are getting fatter and fatter.
C.Americans are eating out more and more.
D.Americans are in greater danger of getting thinner.
2.What does the underlined part “gravitate towards” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Care about. B.Forget about. C.Be afraid of. D.Be attracted to
3.What is Melanie’s attitude towards cooking at home
A.Unclear. B.Positive. C.Worried. D.Doubtful.
4.From what Shiff said we can infer that ________.
A.eating out can be as healthy as eating at home
B.people should stop going to restaurants
C.restaurants usually serve unhealthy food
D.preparing meals at home is more meaningful

Usually, tornadoes(龙卷风) are more common in the spring and summer months. Knowing what to do before and during a tornado can save your life and the life of your loved ones. When you hear that you are in a tornado watch,it means that tornadoes or other kinds of dangerous weather are on the way. You need to be ready to go to a safe shelter if tornadoes do happen or if there is a warning. Listen to local radio or TV programmes for the update so that you have information to make decisions about your safety.
Tornado warnings mean that a tornado has been seen, or that radar has shown there would be a tornado. When a tornado warning is issued for your town or county, take shelter immediately. Tornado sirens(警报器) warn people who are outdoors. Do not expect to hear sirens if you are indoors. Listen to weather reports and watch TV if you are indoors. Remember to have fresh batteries for your radios and flashlights.
Plan ahead for tornado watches and warnings. Talk to your family, friends and neighbours so that you know safe places to go to get out of danger. Here are some important tips:
Take shelter in a basement, away from any windows.
If you are in a house or building with no basement, go to the lowest floor, a small centre room such as a bathroom or closet, under the stairs, or in an inside hallway with no windows.
If you are in a mobile home or trailer, plan ahead and get out!
It is not safe to be in a mobile home or trailer during a tornado. You need to make plans with family, friends or neighbours to go to a safer, stronger home or another building to take shelter.
It is very risky to be in a car or truck during a tornado.
Know if there are tornado watches in the area and avoid driving into dangerous situations. Instead, take shelter in a basement or strong building.
Have an emergency kit ready and keep it in your safe area.
A few ideas for things to have in an emergency kit would be water, a flashlight, food (like crackers, peanut butter, granola bars),a radio that uses batteries, any medications you need, and a first-aid kit.
If you need any further information about preparing for the tornado season or making an emergency kit, call the Four Corners Health Department at (402)362-2621 or click here to view the website http://www. .

2.What should you do when you are in a trailer and a tornado comes
A.You should remain still in the running trailer.
B.You should find a bathroom to hide in.

Sharks use their good sense of smell to search for prey(猎物). But a new study shows that the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean could reduce sharks' ability to find food. It's bad news for a healthy ocean. Sharks are top predators(掠食动物) and are like the ocean’s weed controllers.
Dixson works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Her earlier work has shown that clown fish in acidifying(酸化的) water act strangely. “We want to expand this research to sharks because we know how important it is for sharks to find their food through their sense of smell," said Dixson.
Her team started by placing sharks in each of three different pools for five days. Each pool had a different level of carbon dioxide in it. The first had the same amount as today s ocean water. The second had a level of carbon dioxide that scientists expect to reach by 2050. The third pool had the highest level of carbon dioxide that could develop by the year 2100.
Sharks weren't allowed to eat any food while in the pools. This made sure that they would be hungry. Then, Dixson released the sharks—one at a time—into a pool with two side-by-side streams of flowing water. In one stream, the researchers pumped water, in which a dead squid had been overnight. This water smelled strongly of squid. The other stream contained ocean water with no scent(气味). Because each stream flowed at the same rate and in the same direction, the squid smell stayed in its stream. The sharks could choose to swim in either stream.
Sharks that had been swimming for five days in pools of regular ocean water spent more than 60 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream. The same was true for sharks that had been in water with the carbon dioxide level that could develop by the year 2050. But sharks exposed to the highest level of carbon dioxide spent just 15 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream.
1.Why did the writer mention the sharks’ smell at the beginning of the passage
A.Because the writer appreciates its ability to find food.
B.Because the writer considers it dangerous to human beings.
C.Because the writer intends to show how to control weed in the ocean.
D.Because the writer worries about the sharks in the ocean.
2.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.What the ocean in the future will be like.
B.Who helped Dixson conduct the study.
C.What kinds of pools were used during the study.
D.What the levels of carbon dioxide will be at in the ocean in the future.
3.The researchers pumped water where a dead squid had been overnight to _________.
A.help the sharks look for food
B.test the sharks’ sense of smell
C.prove that sharks like eating squids
D.explain why carbon dioxide in the ocean affects sharks
4.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest
A.Sharks like the squid-scented stream better.
B.Sharks like the stream with the high level of carbon dioxide.
C.Sharks spent 15% of their time in the squid-scented stream.
D.The high level of carbon dioxide can affect the sharks’ ability to smell.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ben was awakened by a gunshot(枪声). He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later a man wearing hunting clothes came out of the woods.
Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall bushes. Safe, Ben thought. The hunter didn't move for a moment. Then he began to follow the bird. "No hunting!" Ben shouted, "No hunting on my property!" The man called back, "where can I hunt "
Ben had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. He walked toward the lake. Fight was the last thing he wanted, but the man must go. Suddenly he heard a bird's wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly towards the sound. He saw a colored head...the head of a beautiful bird. The bird flapped its wings, one of which was broken completely.
Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. It fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben's arms. Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wing so that it could fly again. He was almost through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. "You just find that bird " the hunter asked, stepping closer and said, "Give me that bird!"
"You get off my hand," Ben told him. The man's face got red, "Mister," he said, "I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here." Ben looked into the hunter's gray eyes, his voice raised, "I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place and I am telling you to leave!" "Now look, mister," the hunter insisted, "be reasonable." He raised his gun. A cold wind blew across Ben's face. He felt a chill(寒冷) go down his spine(脊背).He could still give the bird to the hunter and return home safe.

Holding the bird tightly in his arms, Ben knew that he just couldn't give up on this tiny life. 【高分句型一】He raised his eyes and looked directly into the hunter's. The firm and steady gaze sent a strong message to the hunter that by no means would he give in. There was a suffocating silence between the two men.
