Intelligence is the ability to learn and to deal with new situations. When a computer or a robot solves a problem or uses language,it may seem to be intelligent. However, this type of intelligence is different from human intelligence. It is called artificial intelligence, or AI.
For more than 50 years scientists have been trying to make a machine with artificial intelligence that is close to human intelligence. So far they have not been successful. One reason is that intelligence involves so many ways of making decisions and doing tasks. Scientists have figured out how to make computers do some of these things but not others.
Part of Al is trying to figure out what human intelligence is. Then scientists can try to copy it. The final goal of AI is to create computers that can “think” as humans do. The study of AI began with a paper written in 1950 by a British mathematician named Alan Turing. A human judge asks questions using a computer. The questions go to a person hidden from view and to a computer at the same time. The person and the computer both answer the questions. The judge then tries to tell which answers come from the computer and which come from the person. If the judge cannot tell them apart 1 the computer is intelligent. So far no computer has come close to passing the test. This test is now known as the Turing test.
Artificial intelligence comes from sets of instructions that people write. These instructions are called puters use programmes to analyze, or study large amounts of information quickly. Then they pick answers or actions from among many puter programs can be used for playing games-making medical decisions, translating languages, and even designing computers.
But analyzing information is not the same as understanding a problem as humans puters can only use logic, or the relationships among facts^ to figure out problems. Humans use many skills besides logic when making decisions. They use such things as imagination, awareness, emotion. and values. No one knows yet whether these abilities can be programmed into a computer.
1.Alan Turing made up the test to __________.
A.test if the person’s IQ is high B.decide if a computer is intelligent

2.Computers work out problems by means of ___________.

The summer before astronomer Sara Seager entered graduate school, she spent two months canoeing(乘独木舟) to enjoy the wilderness of Canada’s Nunavut Territory. Mike Wevrick, her future husband, journeyed with her. One morning,Seager spotted a fire in the distance. Her only thought was that forest fires appeared to be common here. Rut that evening, it burned right in their path. What’s worse,by the afternoon of the next day, smoke darkened the sky. Panicked, the two made a camp in the forest. Fortunately, by morning, the fire had passed and they were safe.
But Seager would never forget the experience. Nor would it be the last time that the sky in a faraway place would leave a lasting impression on her.
Seager soon found herself studying the atmosphere(大气层) even more remote than Nunavut Territory. She had just won admission to Harvard University's doctoral programme in astrophysics(天体物理学). There, she would be among the first to investigate the skies of other worlds—thousands of planets that have been turning up well beyond our solar system.
Today,21 years later, Seager is attempting to explore what makes up the atmosphere surrounding those distant worlds. Those gases can reveal a lot about a planet. including whether it's home to life. For example, the oxygen and methane ( in the earth s atmosphere
are both signs of possible life. Life generates other gases too. Finding them above a distant planet could lead to the discovery of the earth’s twin another relatively small piece of rock that also supports life.
When Seager turned 40,she held a conference. She invited friends and colleagues to brainstorm how best to find the earth's twin. She told the audience that finding Earth 2. 0 was not the certainty she had once assumed. But together with hard work emd imagination, she thought they could do it.
She imagines that,“Hundreds of or a thousand years from now people will be travelling to the other worlds. And they’ll look back upon us as the generation that first find the earth-like worlds.”
1.Why did Seager and Mike go to Nunavut Territory
A.To keep a record of forest fires there.
B.Fo make a study of the atmosphere of remote places.
C.To enjoy the beauty of wilderness by boat.
D.To explore the sky in a faraway place.
2.We can infer Seager's experience was _________.
A.thrilling and rewarding B.adventurous but frightening
C.pleasant and smooth D.dangerous but impressive
3.What does the underlined word “them" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The gases made by life. B.The signs of possible life.
C.The atmospheres. D.The distant worlds.
4.In the conference she held when she was 40, Seager ___________.
A.declared the finding of Earth 2.0 to the audience
B.expressed her belief in finding a second earth
C.showed doubt about the existence of another earth
D.imagined herself travelling in the other worlds
D
The home of the future won’t be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats just as we do today. But people will shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy “house kits ” containing a basic house structure, with movable walls, doors and windows. They will put together different parts to create the home they want.
Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still exist but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won't disappear because machines can't replace them. Teachers will still exist because students need human contact. But they will be using modern technology in class more and students will be working more from home. The medical technology revolution and space travel will create new jobs which we can only imagine today.
Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won't be for everyone because they won t be cheap. Short space trips will develop first, and then space hotels will orbit the earth where it will he possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will have been holiday centres on the moon with leisure facilities for families.
Paper won’t exist in the future. Instead, there will be e-paper which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to save natural resources. E-newspapers and e-magazines will replace traditional newspapers and magazines and we will download information and news articles from the Internet every day.
The laws of physics tell us that the earth is going to disappear some time in the future. This isn't going to happen tomorrow but scientists predict that it will happen in five billion years when our sun explodes. We will have to explore the universe and find another home. At some point in the distant future, either we stay on the earth and die with it, or we leave and move to another planet. There won't be any other choice.
1.What is special about the home of the future
A.It will be connected to each other more closely.
B.It will be a large flat with a friendly living room.
C.It will be affordable for different kinds of people.
D.It will be designed according to the owner's will.

A.Skilled workers will face great challenges.
B.The future will witness job changes.

D.An unimaginable life will come into being.

A.become a very common way to spend holidays

D.still only be for very rich people
4.Why will e-paper replace traditional paper

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
"Tasha, would you like to know where we are going " Mom asked calmly.
"I guess...", I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.

第二节
答案:
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face beamed, though, as I could see, there were some scars on her little arms. "Hi. I’m Ashley. You wanna play dolls with me " she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, "Sure. I’d love to." Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sore for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a profound time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
