Acid rain(酸雨) is very harmful to the environment because it makes living things die. Acid rain affects life in the water as well as life on the land. Il is even worse in the water because the fish need the water to breathe. When the water gets polluted, the fish get sick and end up dying.
All rainwater contains some level acidity(酸性). Acidity is measured by PH, which stands for potential of hydrogen(氢). The PH scale measures the amount of acid in a substance. PH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14,with 7 being neutral(中性的). The lower the number is on the PH scale, the more acidic that substance is. Normal rainwater has a PH of 5. 6. When the PH level of rainwater goes below 5. 6,it is considered acid rain.
All of the sea life will die when the water becomes too acidic. For example, all fish will die when the water goes below a PH of 4. 5. Most of the frogs and insects that live around the water will also die when the water reaches a PH of 4. 5. When the water has a PH of 5. 5, all of the bottom-dwelling bacterial decomposers(分解体),animaLs that eat the remains of the food that other animals don't want, will begin to die. When these decomposers die, they will leave the under-composed food on the bottom. This will make the water dirty and polluted. All fresh water shrimp will die when the water has a PH of 6. 0. Aquatic plants will grow the best when the water has a PH between 7. 0 and 9. 2. If the acid rain problem gets worse, all of the sea life will eventually be gone.
1.Acid rain _________.
A.does more harm to life in the water than on land
B.will kill the living things as soon as it touches them
C.is rainwater which contains any amount of acidity
D.is a substance which has potential of hydrogen
2.Which of the following can die most easily in acidic water
A.All fish. B.Frogs and insects.
C.Bacterial decomposers. D.Fresh water shrimp.

A.if the PH of rainwater is 5. 6, all of the sea life will be gone
B.if the PH of sea water is below 7. 0, it is not a problem
C.if the PH of rainwater is below 5. 6, it is dangerous.
D.if the PH of sea water is below 4. 5. some of the sea fish can't die
4.This passage mainly tells us _________.
A.the definition of acid rain B.how to measure rainwater's PH level

Isle Royale is surrounded by the deep blue waters of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake on Earth. The only way to get there is by boat or seaplane. The National Park Service operates shuttle boats that take visitors to Isle Royale. The boats leave from two Michigan ports. A boat trip to Isle Royale takes three to five hours. Waters are often extremely rough.
Modern copper mining began in the late 1800s. resulting in large areas of the island being burned. This led to settlement development. Soon,Isle Royale became popular for summer homes. It became a national park on April 3, 1940. In 1980, officials named it an International Biosphere Reserve(生物圈保护区) because of its unique ecosystem.
Isle Royale offers hiking, camping, boating, and even scuba diving. The National Park Service protects 11 sunken(沉没的) boats for divers to explore. They are reminders of Lake Superior s commercial shipping history. The sunken wooden ship called The America is one of the most popular dive sites. The America carried passengers, mail, and supplies to many towns along the shores of Lake Superior. It first launched in 1898, and was used until 1928, when it was damaged. It sank to the bottom of the lake soon after.
Visitors to Isle Royale share the trails with a well-studied population of wolves. Scientists believe wolves walked there during a freeze of the lake sometime in the 1940s. Researchers closely record their population numbers. Much of the research takes place during the winter, when the trees are bare. The researchers fly over the island to observe the animals from above.
Animal research is the only winter activity going on at Isle Royale. The national park is closed each year in late October because of the terrible weather conditions and reopens in spring time the next year.
But for the other months of the year. Isle Royale offers green forests, and clear blue waters. Its excellent scenery and unusual location keep visitors returning year after year.

Ears are for hearing —everyone knows that. But for a creature called the Cuvier's beaked whale, hearing starts in the throat, a new study found.
The observation might help explain how all whales hear. The work might also help scientists understand how animals are affected by underwater sonar(声呐). This sonar, used by some ships, sends out sound waves to locate underwater objects.
The Cuvier s beaked whale is a so-called toothed whale. Toothed whales dive deep into the ocean in search of food. As the whales hunt, they produce sounds that reach objects and then return to the whales. This allows the animals to “see” the shape, size, and location of objects, even when they’re 1,000 metres under the sea, where it is totally dark.
To better understand how the whale hears, researchers from San Diego State University in California took X-rays of two Cuvier s beaked whales. The whales had died and washed up on the beach.
Ted Cranford and his colleagues used the images to make a computer model of a Cuvier's beaked whale s head. Then, they modelled the process of sound travelling through the head. The researchers knew that some sounds get to the ears of a toothed whale through a structure called “the window for sound”. Found on the lower jaw, this structure is very thin on the outside and has a large pad(垫) of fat on the inside.
When the researchers used their computer model to work out how sound waves travel in the whale’s head, they were surprised to find that sounds coming from right in front of the whale actually travel under the animal's jaw. From there, sound waves move through the throat, into a hole in the hack of the jaw, and finally to the pad of fat near the animal's ears.
1.Toothed whales __________ to search for what they will eat under the sea.
A.measure the shape and size of their objects
B.watch deep into the sea
C.ask other whales to work together
D.give out signals and wait for them to return

D.know more about the way the whale hears
3.Which of the following describes the way taken by sound waves through a Cuvier's beaked whale
A.A hole in the back of the jaw→the ears→the jaw→ the throat.
B.The jaw→the throat→hole in the back of the jaw → the ears.
C.The throat→the jaw→he ears→hole in the hack of the jaw.
D.The ears→the throat →a hole in the back of the jaw→the jaw.
4.According to the passage, we know that ___________.
A.the throat is important to the Cuvier's beaked whale’s hearing
B.ships send out sound waves like a Cuvier's beaked whale
C.the ears are actually useless to the Cuvier's beaked whale
D.the researchers haven't found how the whales hear

Little Tom was a nine years old boy who always behaved ill. When he saw a person passing by in front of him, he would make fun of him and even throw stones at him. He thought it was fun.
One afternoon, when little Tom was on the way home after school, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a luggage in his hand, and he wore a black hat. As soon as he saw the stranger, Tom whispered to his playmates, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, knocked off his hat and ran away. The man turned and saw him, but Tom was out of hearing before he could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again did Tom approach, but this time, the man caught him by the arm. However, he just looked at the boy for a moment in the face, and then pushed him from him. No sooner did the naughty boy find himself free again than he began to pelt the stranger with dirt and stones. Accidentally, a stone hit the man on the head and he was badly hurt. All the boys now ran away, and Tom ran across the fields to his home, feeling frightened.
Before he entered his house, his sister Rose came out to meet him, with a beautiful toy and some new books in her hands. She told Tom excitedly that their uncle, who had been away for several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had brought beautiful presents for the whole family; and walked on foot, so as to surprise his brother, their father.

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Keeping a Healthy Diet
According to the survey recently, we find only a few students focus on keeping a healthy diet. But I think it is very important for our health.
In my opinion, healthy diet means more green foods, no junk foods. The green food is those pollution-free, high quality and nutrient food, including the organic vegetables and meats, fruits, eggs, milk and so on. And the junk food is those with much salt or oil, such as the fries, fried chickens, salted eggs and so on. These foods will cause one get weight and increase the risk of many diseases.
We should keep a healthy diet, and abandon the junk food to keep ourselves healthy.

答案:
Rose told him that their uncle was hurt because a stone hit his head. On hearing this, Tom felt that it was the end of the world. He didn’t dare to enter the house, feeling the house wasn’t warm as usual. Just at the moment, he heard his father calling him to come in. His face turned pale when he drew his legs to the door, thinking that how wonderful if time stopped. Slowly he approached the door handle with his trembling hands. Then he heard his mother’s words, “Hurry, Tom! See this beautiful watch and these books your uncle has bought for you.” Little Rose held his arm and pulled him into the house.
When he saw Tom, his uncle couldn’t believe his eyes. He shouted, “He is the boy who threw stones and hit me on the head.” What a sense of shame did Tom feel now. He lowered his head and said sorry with tears in his eyes. To make up his bad deed, Tom asked for a chance to take care of his uncle before he recovered. His uncle chose to forgive him. But his father was so angry that he wouldn’t permit Tom to have the presents his uncle had bought for him before he got rid of the bad manners. Seeing his uncle’s head, Tom realized how awful he was. He promised that he wouldn’t do such things again. He never forgot this lesson so long as he lived.
