Passage 1
Mei Mei frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now ” Mei Mei grumbled, mostly to herself.
“What’s that " Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok.
“Nothing," Mei Mei mumbled. The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Mei Mei's parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Mei's age. As she filled their glasses, Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mei Mei's mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers.”

Passage 1
One possible version:
“Mom.Idon’t want to be out there!”Mei Mei murmured, head drooping. Feeling Mei Mei in a bad mood, her mother asked her what was wrong softly. At that moment, Mei Mei couldn’t help pouring out her troubles,“Withouta friend,I’m isolated here.”Realizing they failed to care about Mei Mei’s feelings in entirely new surroundings, her mother felt her heart sink. Holding her daughter in her arms, she apologized for her ignorance and suggested she can make new friends by taking action first. What her mother said really comforted her and motivated her to take the first step. Suddenly, an idea popped into herhead.
Mei Mei put a handful of cookies into a small plate and left the kitchen. She went straight towards the twins’table and put the plate ontheirtable, saying the cookies were specially prepared for friends by her parents’restaurant. Amazed, the twins had their mouth open, for they had never seen Mei Mei as afriend. Mei Mei added that she was new here and wondered if they could be her tour guides on weekends. The twins nodded, sincerely inviting her to join them. Over chatting, Me Mei found they shared the same interest—making pots. She pictured three little girls making pots, her face lit up and lips curving into a smile.
Passage 2
Missus Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two, she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.
On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal -no!
Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all
When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, “Well, I will buy this pair.”
Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies’ rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

After buying a pair of new boots, she walked into the clothing department.__________________________________________

Passage 2
One possible version:
After buying a pair of new boots, she walked into the clothing department. When hostess introduced a knee-length dress with lace to her, her heart was thumping with excitement. Without hesitation, Misisus Sommers tried on the dress, admiring herself in the mirror.“I’ll buy it.”she said with the bright smile. When she left the clothing department, all the passers-by paid attention to her.“What an elegant lady!”people whispered. With eyes twinkled with excitement, Missus Sommers couldn’t wait to share her happiness with the children.
She was about to leave the store when a kid running around reminded her of something.“Is this your note I see it fall out from your bag.”the kid said. And the note said“New shoes for Janie. New shirts for the boys. Another dress for Mag. New stocking for the Children.”How could she forget all this Her cheeks were burning with shame. Missus Sommers thanked the boy and rushed to the stores where she bought clothes. She returned what she bought and purchased what the children needed. Leaving the store, Missus Sommers was no longer elegant but relieved. After all, it was her responsibility to take good care of her dear children.
Passage 3
Freddie woke up to see it was snowing-again. The world outside was white. Snow covered the roads, the cars, the houses, and even the driveway Freddie had just shoveled(铲)the day before.
“Ugh,” said Freddie. “No more snow!” He got out of bed and headed to the bathroom for his regular morning shower. As he reached for the taps, his mother appeared in the doorway.
“I’ve got news,” she said. “There’s been so much snow overnight that the roads are slippery and dangerous. I just heard on the radio that they canceled the school buses for the day.”
Freddie groaned. “Then how am I supposed to get to school ”
His mom grinned. “I guess you don’t. It’s a snow day!”
Freddie’s eyes lit up. He’d never had a snow day off from school before. What would he do first
“I’m going back to bed!” Freddie headed back to his room and climbed under the covers. After a few minutes, he realized that it was too late. He was already wide awake. He headed down to the kitchen and then sat at the table, watching his father fry the eggs over in the pan and his mother pour juice and coffee. It was relaxing, thought Freddie.
After breakfast his mother suggested he go out and build a snowman. Freddie wasn’t too sure. He didn’t really like the cold and the snow. He’d rather stay inside and play video games.
“You can play afterward, but how about going outside for a little bit It’s good to get some fresh air, and who knows, you might even enjoy yourself.” Freddie unwillingly put on the warm clothes and headed outside.
Standing alone in the front yard, with the cold wind blowing, was not Freddie’s idea of a good time. Knowing his mom meant what she said, the boy sighed, thinking the quicker he completed his snowman, the faster he could go back inside to his video games. He set to work packing up some snow into a large ball.
Moments later, he saw one of his friends appearing from his house up the street. Dion waddled(蹒跚)out in his big snow trousers and heavy overcoat. He waved to Freddie.
“Hey there! I saw you out here and thought you might want company. Snow days are awesome!” Dion laughed.

Passage 3
One possible version:
Freddie was surprised but happy to see his classmate.“Yeah, sure. Help me make this snowman, would you ”Dion nodded, and they got to work, building the snowman a sturdy base and lifting a heavy snowball on top of it. It seemed like the snowman was finished in no time. Dion found some stones for buttons, and Freddie stuck a couple of broken branches into the body to make arms. Finally the snowman was finished! Then they stood back to admire their work, exhausted and read-cheeked but excited and happy. Suddenly Dion said,“Hey, I know what we can do next!”He told Freddie his idea, and he grinned.
Delighted at the idea, Freddie excitedly ran into his house. His mom met him at the door.Seeing snow full of Freddie’s face and overcoat, she couldn’t help laughing.“Are you ready to come in now ”she asked.“Not yet, Mom!”Freddie said excitedly. He askedhis mother if he could go to the park with Dion and go sledding down the hill. Knowing Freddie would rather enjoy himself outside than play video games at home, his mother agreed without hesitation, with her face shining like a diamond.“Snow days are the best!”Freddie yelled as he ran off to play with his friends.
Passage 4
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determinedthat Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny. _____________________________________________________

Passage 4
One possible version:
The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny. They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl, and her family, who indeed lived in Nogales. Hearing the great news, Heiss changed his entire day and went to the shopping mall with his wife. They bought just about everything on Dayami’s list except for the dollhouse; it was sold out. Then the Heisses drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They arrived at the Radio Xeny offices with presents by the armload and finally met the very excited little girl and her parents.
Dayami’s eyes were wide open with wonder. She had been writing a letter to Santa Claus and sending it by balloon for years, but this was the first time anyone had found the note. Not wanting to spoil Santa Clause for the girl, Heiss and his wife told her they were Santa’s helpers. With the sweetest smile of that Christmas season, the girl held the doll in her arms. What a miracle it was that Heiss spotted the balloon, let alone that she was able to locate Dayami and her family. For a day, that border fence melted away.
Passage 5
Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some ofher organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens- her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Passage 5
One possible version:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.Hands sweating and heart racing, she examined the list from the very end to the top.“Jonas Green, Julie Smith,…”she murmured, in fear that her mere confidence would give herself away. Every murmur was a nerve-racking experience. So nervous was she that she even held her breath for a bit. Finally, much to her amazement, she found her name was posted on the top.“Aha!”she let out a shriek, disbelief in her eyes first but relieved smiles in her face later. The abrupt shriek arrested people who packed to figure out why, including Mr. Buttler. He approached Emily and exchanged a firm handshake with her. That was the moment Emily felt not being rejected but accepted. The following days, although feeling sorry for herself occasionally, she endeavored to do rehearsals with unremitting efforts. Her beautiful voice and superior sing skills even made her the leading singer!
“Jonas Green, Julie Smith……”
Finally, the day of performance came.On the stage of the school auditorium were standing the singing group. As the curtains rose and the spotlight shot on Emily, there was a scene of chaos. Apparently, it was from the audience, staring, teasing and gossiping because of Emily’s recognizable strange body figure. The few who could not see the real person inside her body do not make her annoyed. Thanks to Mr. Buttler, Emily White was psychologically strong enough to contain her sentiment. Taking a deep breath, she started to sing. The moment the lyrics flew, the chaos came to a sudden stop. Eyes were back to Emily, a shining“diamond”on stage. When the song was over, applause was everywhere. Seemingly no one expected her to succeed. She did make it despite her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
Passage 6
Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,”his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he'd win again.
He’s taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip Ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place-and then third-and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, we all love ice cream, but it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it's time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.
Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn’t perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

Passage 6
One possible version:
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn't sure what to expect. He’d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still has any speed in the pool. As he dove into the water, he kicked his legsand stretched his arms as far as he could. This race was long one with several laps, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feeling tired.
Finally came the end of the race.Mike’s jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else’s too. Mike had won his race and he had also qualified for the national championships. The audience and his teammate cheered loudly, and his parents were grinning from ear to ear.“Hey champ, let’s go grab some of your favorite ice cream and celebrate!”said his father.“Thanks, Dad, but I’ll pass on the ice cream; it’s not such a lucky charm after all.”
