Learning objectives
-ing as adverbial 现在分词作状语
定义:
动词-ing形式作状语时,在句中表示时间、原因、条件、让步、结果、方式或伴随动作,相当于对应的状语从句或并列句。
现在分词的逻辑主语必须是句子的主语,必须和句中的主语含有逻辑上的主谓关系, 否则不能用现在分词作状语。
一、现在分词作状语的形式
主动语态 被动语态
一般式 doing being done
完成式 having doing having been done
温馨提示
当现在分词的动词与谓语动词的动作同时发生时,用分词的一般式。
Seeing the beautiful sight, the children felt
happy. (seeing与felt同时发生)
看到美丽的景色,孩子们很高兴。
当现在分词的动作发生在谓语动词的动作之前时,用分词的完成式。
Having written the letter,John went to the post office. (having written发生在went之前)
写完信后,约翰去了邮局。
Examples
Seeing the beautiful sight, the children felt happy.
I am very pleased at your being chosen a member of the school volleyball team. 我很高兴你能被选为学校排球队的队员。
Having written the letter,John went to the post office.
I forgot once having been taken to the city zoo. 我忘了曾经被带到过城市动物园。
二、现在分词作状语的基本功能
作时间状语。
通常放在句首,相当于when/ while/ after等引导的时间状语从句。
Putting on his clothes (=After he put on his clothes), Bill went out in a hurry. 穿上衣服后, 比尔匆忙离开了。
Arriving at the party(=When she arrived at the party), she found all the people gone. 到达聚会时,她发现所有的人都走了。
作原因状语。
通常放在句首,相当于as/ because/ since/ now that 等引导的原因状语从句。
Being ill (=As he was ill), he could not walk any farther. 因为生病,他不能再往前走了。
Being anxious about his child’s safety (=Because he was anxious about his child’s safety), he couldn’t fall asleep.
因为担心孩子的安全,他不能入睡。
作条件状语。
通常放在句首,相当于if/ unless等引导的条件状语从句。
Using a new method(=If we use a new method), we can finish our task ahead of time. 如果我们使用新方法,就能提前完成任务。
Going straight down the road,you will find the canteen. (=Unless you go straight down the road, you won’t find the canteen.) 沿着这条路一直走, 你就会找到食堂。
作让步状语。
通常放在句首,相当于although/ though等引导的让步状语从句。
Knowing all this(=Although they knew all this), they still made me pay for the damage. 尽管知道了一切情况,他们还是要我赔偿损失。
Knowing where I live(=Though he knows where I live), he never comes to see me. 尽管知道我住在哪里,他也从来没有来看过我。
作结果状语。
通常位于句末且中间有逗号, 相当于一个并列分句。
Her parents moved to Beijing, leaving the house to her(=and left the house to her). 她的父母搬去了北京,把房子留给了她。
温馨提示:
动词-ing形式作结果状语,表示自然而然的结果。而动词不定式作结果状语则表示出乎意料的结果,且常与only 连用。
Examples
I built all my hopes on his promises, only to find that he was not an honest person.
The book sold more than 500,000 copies a year, thus making it one of the best sellers at that time.
作方式状语。
现在分词作方式状语时表示行为方式或补充说明, 既可放在句首,也可放在句尾,相当于一个由and连接的并列句。
Using this way, he solved the problem. 他用这种方法解决了这个问题。
He used this way and solved the problem.
作伴随状语。
用来说明动作发生的背景或状况。一般情况下, 现在分词的动作与谓语动词的动作同时进行, 其动作发出者就是句子的主语。谓语动词是主要动作, 分词是次要动作。
He was walking along the street, looking this way and that. 他在街上走着, 左顾右盼。
They all stood there, watching closely as the magician did the tricks. 他们都站在那里, 密切注视着魔术师的表演。

      (praise) for the job, Tom worked harder.

The production was full of colours and romantic symbols, and challenged my senses in new ways. I enjoyed it so much that it’s changed my opinion about ballet. I can’t wait to go again!
